I had an ML320 but I never used it offroad, I regret that. I love the W163, it's a great car that people underestimate. thank you for showing me that I need to buy another and take it off-roading :-).
That's right. Big enough inside. Primitive for service. The equipment is adequate. Good approach angles. Runs beautifully on the road. Off-road, it doesn't offend. I now own a Jeep Commander with a 5.7 Hemi. It's a galaxy apart in the terrain. Mechanically closed all 3 differecials are another universe o versus imitation shutters over ABS. Unfortunately, the car is so good in the Terreno that I'm sick of it... You had to play with the Mercedes a bit and pick your way. In the Jeep, none of that is necessary. It does everything but everything for you. That's similar in both cars, though. Except that in the Jeep, everyone expects you to drive/ride absolutely everything... so it's actually uninteresting. When I drove the Mercedes through a place where the Jeep/Nissan patrol fit in. People's reaction was great. I had the Mercedes just for the good feeling.
My 2000 ML 320 has a clunk under gas from stop. So i assume i need a new used T-case for under $250 canadian...plus it came used with no low range switch or one for the heated seats, too. Sunroof leaks so bad i taped it up...So i have to strip interior, clean out sunroof run off piller tubes of debris so it slows the leaks enough i can repair the din radio plus other electrical faults.
@FlacK88-ek8vg In low range, I use it only if the terrain is extreme, you can at this time turn off ESP use it for steeper hils, sand, mud, or deep snow situations, also has to be driven below 20 miles/hr. Because the ETS system for traction works better at low speeds, and after I turn it back off and ESP on
The Mercedes W163 ML has no differential locks. The 4ETS system takes care of the imitation differential locks, braking the faster spinning wheels via an ABS pump. All W163s have all 3 differentials (front, middle, rear) open. All W163s have Low range with offroad mod where the 4ETS system works more efficiently. I do recommend buying an original facelift car. @@haskyllo it uses torsion bars up front so that’s an easy lift without having to buy new springs, just pull them out of their indexed holes, twist to the next spot, and see if you like that ride height.

Turn off the ESP, I suspect it is fighting you and causing the brake squeal. The manual says you should do this for the ETS to work properly off road.
True, low range with ESP off this vehicles can claim almost everything the ground clearance can allow it
