Thank you! I just hemmed some curtains in my house and I've never sewn before (I'm gonna be 52 in a month!). Thank you for the great instruction. It was super helpful and my attempt was successful! Appreciate you sharing the process.
I have been sewing for years and I have never seen such a quick and easy way of doing a tedious job. Excellent. You saved me hours of work. Thank you Catherine
I was a military wife for 13 1/2 years. When we moved, I would extended or shorten curtains depending on the house. It's definitely a great way to save money when you move a lot. Great Job, as usual, Catherine!
I too have been wanting to hem some curtains. Never thought to measure from the bottom, way less daunting. Obviously I’m not an experienced sewer. Thanks
I noticed a comment saying this is not the proper way but it is easier for us regular folk. Just a tip if they don't hang nice at the bottom, drapery weights in the hem will help.
I have done a number of curtains a few years back and am thankful for your video as I had a number of panels to do again and your video helped a great deal. Thanks for sharing! 🇨🇦
Thank you so much! I’m new to sewing and my friend asked me to take up her curtains. It was my 3rd sewing project! Easy to follow instructions and the curtains came out really well (even if I do say so myself).
Different way of doing this! But, as an owner of a bespoke, made to measure curtain business for 34 years can I point out a couple of things. Any curtain or lining fabric that is ironed at the seam/hem will only ever “hang out” to the seam and not naturally. The best way to shorten curtains with heading tape ( not eyelets) is to shorten from the top. Take off the tape, shorten, then reapply the tape, leaving the hem untouched.
Also an easier job when the curtains are unlined. For anyone out there wanting curtains made properly forget Amazon and IKEA go to your local bespoke business and have them made to measure. They will be correct without the hassle and will be cost effective too. A lovely gesture for a neighbour here which is lovely to see. Good tips on using the sewing machine too.🪡🪡🪡🪡
Darling, this couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I just received the curtains I won on eBay. I knew they’d be too long but I love them. I’m definitely going to be having a go myself. THANK YOU for showing how to alter. You’re the best! Thank You.xxx
Perfect timing! 😍 We are painting our bedrooms and the curtains need to be shortened. I was a bit in the dark where to start. So a big thankyou for this video. And... you were not lazy, but protecting your back doing the measuring and cutting on the ironingboard! Great idea! 👌🏼
Lovely Surprise to see a Video on a Sunday 🌸 Nice of You to help Your Neighbour ~ I have shortened Curtains before but not lined ones ~so this was helpful to me ~💖 X
This is an excellent video! I just bought the cutest curtains and I find that they are a bit too long and I was afraid to tackle it, but watching your video made it very easy and I’m confident that I can do the job. Thanks so much!
I've always found curtains daunting because I often sew wonkily. Might have to give it a go now! Also, very kind of you to do them for your neighbour. Xoxo
Awesome skills, there 🎉. It’s such a thrill to be able to bring lovely things to your home and the neighborhood, and even your day job (the lounge redo) using those skills. Take care.
Hi there - thank you for this informative video. I'm about to learn how to use a sewing machine and I need to shorten some curtains so this is very helpful. And you've made it look easy so I don't feel as daunted by the task. I also think it was smart to use the ironing board to do your measuring. It would have been much easier than sitting on the floor.
Just pulled out my christmas curtains, noticed that they were about 23cm (ca 9 inches) too long, so they were dragging on the floor and I wanted to shorten them a bit, so this video was very helpful to me. :)
I loved your simple instructions. You’re sewing machine works so well. I wonder if it’s sold here in the US? I picked up a singer beginner style machine recently but gave it back the next day due to constant jams! I’ve made curtains in the past but just used the iron on bonding tape as worried about the jams!! My mum in the UK still uses the old hand turned vintage singer machine..and made her curtains! Thankyou
Super useful! Thank you so much. Now all I need to do is find someone with a sewing machine (or consider investing in one myself as it does seem to come in handy quite often) 😂
We have the same cat! Thank you so much for the vid. First time with a sewing machine, so I'm a bit nervous about sewing my fingers to the curtains and having to live like a bat when I put them back up, but your video was a great help! =^. .^=
Looks easier on the ironing board! I'm shortening some really wide ones, and not enough floor. The blackout lining worries me about ironing, will it melt? 😬
Not to nit pic but the lining should always be sewn separately however yours looked perfect I have done it and failed and its puckered but megga points coz most nowadays wouldn't bother I enjoy your channel
TIP : Just be aware that not all ready made curtains have an even, straight edge at the bottom. If you cut off fabric measuring from the bottom, you could end up with a crooked hem.
Thanks for the video. I'm about to hem a set of curtain panels. I just noticed that you added two inches (for the hem) but then you folded it over not once, but twice. So, were these not two inches too short? Or did you do a 1-inch hem?
Hello, I have 4 panels of blackout curtains to hem and I'm going from 72" inches in length to 64" in length because I could not find the kind of curtains I liked and also their is a heat register by the window. Do you have any suggestions in how I start this process. I'm alittle intimidated in beginning this project ,therefore I've been searching for some help. You've made it look so easy. I have made curtains in the past, but hemming store bought curtains at this length. Never!
Hi sweetheart, so, you have a difference of 8", measure up from the bottom 6" and mark with pins or tailors chalk. Then allow 2" for the fold of the seam allowance. Or more if you want a thicker hem. Or, if you are really nervous, I would leave these in with an alterations company. x

Aww what a kind thing to do for your neighbour, such a sweetie X❤X

That's so sweet.
@@helenarichard Thanks,😁
I've had new curtains sitting in my room for 3 weeks that need altering but too scared to cut them! This is a sign to me!
You can do it Ruby ❤️❤️❤️❤️
We never learn in life if we don't try, and we dont learn get up and move on if don't fail :)
I have hemmed curtains except I handsewed mine. You are a seewt friend. Hope your neighbor apreciates this
I too have been wanting to hem some curtains. Never thought to measure from the bottom, way less daunting. Obviously I’m not an experienced sewer. Thanks
You're such a great neighbor! You just come across as a real sweetheart so it shouldn't be a surprise. Blessings and much love

Wonderful video, my Auntie asked me to shorten her curtains after this video I am more confident I can get'r done! needed this. Thanks for sharing.
The larger hem on curtains definitely looks better.
I was so scared to cut my new curtains, but this helped so much. Thank you!

Hi Dainty, I just so happened to have hemmed 2 sets of curtains and they came out great.
Yes I agree a larger hem just gives a nice finish to a pair of curtains
This is an excellent video! I just bought the cutest curtains and I find that they are a bit too long and I was afraid to tackle it, but watching your video made it very easy and I’m confident that I can do the job. Thanks so much!

I've always found curtains daunting because I often sew wonkily. Might have to give it a go now! Also, very kind of you to do them for your neighbour. Xoxo
I can be a wonky sewer too but the trick is to measure from the bottom and be sure the hem is the same all around and you won’t go wrong Amy ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You made that look so simple to do. Such a helpful video. Many thanks.
Awesome video! I love this mini DIY video! I need to hem my daughter's curtain. Right now they are tied into a knot on the bottom. This helps!
Nice of you to help your neighbor, you did good.
Great job! I love your slippers, they look so comfy x

@@DaintyDiaries you are welcome..you have a beautiful home. Ciao ciao
Hi dainty I'm in the process of shorten 6 pairs of curtains for a very good friend
Thanks girl. Ive been putting it off, but it doesn't seem that daunting anymore. Hopefully in a week or 3 i get around to it 😂.
Brilliant, thank you
My daughter likes to sew and knit, she says everyone she knows suddenly has curtains that need alterations done!, 😀😀👌

🤣 I hear ya. You might get an early new second hand one handy?
I think I'm going to watch all my tutorials by Irish content creators...that voice!!! 💚 🤍 🧡
❤️❤️❤️☺️ thank you x
Fast and furious.. came out great.
You're such a nice neighbor...
Oh! What a nice surprise! You don't typically post on sundays, do you? Yay.
Great video. Erin go Bragh!

A good skill to have!!❤️
Clever girl!
Thank you!!!
I have a question.....why you need to take out side seems or do they remain and just get sewn over into the hem?
Can anything be done with the spare Fabric ~
Cover chair seats or a Stool perhaps? x
I would make the extra fabric into tie backs :) 🎃🍃🍁🍂🍃🌵🎃🍃🍁🍂🍃🌵🎃🍃🍁🍂🍃🌵
Pillow (cushion) backing fabrics for sure.
Catherine is resourceful, no doubt she'll put them to good 🧡 use
Looks easier on the ironing board! I'm shortening some really wide ones, and not enough floor. The blackout lining worries me about ironing, will it melt? 😬
Thank you
Quick and simple, thank you! Just one thing, I didn't see you folding the fabric twice?
1.31 approx
Not to nit pic but the lining should always be sewn separately however yours looked perfect I have done it and failed and its puckered but megga points coz most nowadays wouldn't bother I enjoy your channel
I hemmed mine last year, made a slight arse of it one slightly longer but you'd hardly notice🤣🤣. I didn't have alot of space to cut them.
TIP : Just be aware that not all ready made curtains have an even, straight edge at the bottom. If you cut off fabric measuring from the bottom, you could end up with a crooked hem.
This happened to me when I followed this video. Very frustrating. Measuring from the top though is much harder...
Fabulous vid, thank u
Great video, thanks for sharing! You make that look so easy! 👍👍 how long did it take you to take up the pair of curtains?
Thanks ❤️ it took me an hour xx and lots of tea 😉
Awesome
How did you sew in the lining for the curtain? What stitch did you use in stitching the hem?
Please make a video on how to make curtains less wide, too, can you use the same hem sizes?
Ironing board to cut fabric brilliant
Not a good idea at all fabric needs to be totally flat
What sewing machine model do you have?
Now I try and do mine 😅
Fantastic!!! What did you do with the left over material??? Pillow shams? Table runner? Tote bag?
I put it in the stash 😂😂😂
Thanks for the video. I'm about to hem a set of curtain panels. I just noticed that you added two inches (for the hem) but then you folded it over not once, but twice. So, were these not two inches too short? Or did you do a 1-inch hem?
Yes, I folded it over 1 inch, then folded it over again1 inch and used 2 inch of fabric for this x
I am sure your neighbour will be pleased
What stitch is best for this? I am brand new to using a sewing machine and am looking for any advice I can get!
Hiya, I would use a straight stitch for this x

Hello.I just want to ask why do after stitching the hem,the right side has an ugly stitch.do you know how to fix this?thank you in advance
