Lasair seems like a Secretariat of endurance racing. Even his name is dreamy. He’s quite a horse, you are quite a rider, that’s quite a sport. I feel it was a great treat to share in some of that experience. 💕🐴
I love how you can keep your horse going in a straight line while not using any reins! My mare would go off to the left or right like it was none of her business. Hoping to work on riding with loose rein and hopefully a little more speed this year! Great work!
Thank you!! Lasair used to have that problem where he'd weave around on trail like a drunk. He still does it sometimes, but in a race, he is all business. He will go over our under anything I point him at.
Your horse is beautiful and he seems to be having so much fun. I wish my thoroughbred mare was sound enough to do endurance. She has the most ground covering trot and it looks so fun.
Excellent presentation, profound demonstration how its done...detailed perfectly, so well thought-out felt as though out there in the desert myself, as well. Tremendous effort, such a good boy. You both are an awesome team, enjoyed every minute. Look forward to more .❤❤👏🖒👍👊

It's just that his head was going up and down, when you those others were coming alongside, but must have just been his action. Jack would do something similar when cantering, nothing to do with reins either. Congrats again, you are both super fit and look fabulous!
Oh, that was very bad. That's him surging and pounding to fight me. That's how he tore my shoulder, by slamming his head down. Usually, I wouldn't even try to hang on because I know I'm no match for that, but I was trying my best because the other riders were trying to pass. No, that was very bad and him actively arguing with me. Usually, I have to be prepared for a pass so I stay on top of his mindset. Here, I was caught by surprise on the pass and so was behind his mind. Then every moment they stayed next to him instead of passing was making it worse.

Great video, I don’t know anything about endurance riding, obviously the rider has to be fit as well as the horse. Do you canter, trot, walk in a sequence, and do the riders get off and walk or jog with their horses. Just to give them a rest..
Thank you!! You can do whatever you like depending on your fitness. There are those that ride the whole time, others take breaks and jog with the horse. Endurance is very open!

You're welcome! You can start out with a Intro ride, which is usually around 10-15 miles. That will give you a good intro into how the camp works and all that. Or an LD (Limited Distance) is 25 miles. Just think of it as a camping trip with a trail ride!
@@DawnSChampion yes that’s a large part of my fear as well.. camping. So that’s a good idea!! I should find a trail and just experiment w camping! We have a great LQ Lakota ready to go. @@Winterz54321 - I have an article in Endurance News on Containment Systems. If you find me on FB, I can point you to that post. You should be able to find me by searching for "Dawn Champion Lasair"
Average speeds are under 30mph. We can hit speeds of 26mph and still be operating in the green zone for hours. The fastest speed I've gone on him was 46mph, but that is in the red zone and we can't do that in an endurance race because it burns too much fuel. Recovery is within 5-15 minutes, depending on how I manage him. His strength is that he has a huge gait and power and can hold that for hours. The Arabians don't have the speed, but they can hold a steady, slower gait for even longer and have a faster recovery of 1-10 minutes. Lasair is competitive to 50 miles, but after that, I suspect the Arabians would pull ahead as he begins to tire. He uses up more fuel and therefore creates more waste while the Arabians seem to be like the Prius of the horse world - much more efficient fuel management.
I am a charro and western rider and I want to participate in endurance races. Do I need to learn to ride English every other video I have seen, everybody is riding English.
Not at all. You can do it in whatever (humane) tack you have. There are some people that do it in Western saddles. It's just that western saddles with horns are made to work cattle. They are heavy and cumbersome. In Endurance, you'll be riding for 50+ miles and you might want to/need to take off your saddle at vet checks. A lightweight saddle is better for that and the comfort of your horse. You can absolutely participate in the Intro (10-15 mile rides) or Limited Distance (
