  • I am a American board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. My journey becoming a nurse practitioner starts at my first year of college as an undecided student. I talk about how I went from undergrad, nursing school, working as a nurse, and then my experience through nurse practitioner school.

    Awww, you give me hope. I’m lab scientist with a bachelor degree, now about to finish my associate in nursing in 2 week. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner but I’m getting discouraged with all the years I have left. Thank you for sharing ❤️

    Haha this is so true. Currently in my FNP program. 9.5 years for my DNP in case I go into education later lol. I definitely prefer mental labor than physical. Switched to ambulatory care nursing while in this program for experience. Thanks for the videos.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. Do you mind posting a video sharing how you studied for boards? What resources do you recommend? Which board exam did you take?

      Hi Tonia! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll work on putting that video out soon :)

    Please discuss oversaturation. Also, do you think other specialties related to the nurse practitioner role are oversaturated? I kind of feel so old now, I'm 36, and I'm barely about to graduate from nursing school.

      In my experience FNP is the most saturated field, second is acute care NP. I think psych is still good. The saturation issue mainly makes it hard for new grads. After about 2 years experience finding a job isn't too bad. Majority of my classmates were at least 30. So don't worry about your age! :)

    Is ED experience a must for being an FNP? I have over 10 years in a MS tele unit and 2 years in Ortho trauma MS unit... My ultimate goal is being an FNP at an urgent care like you. should I lateral transfer to the ED for a few years prior to going to NP school?

    • @ahmedmirza3458
      @ahmedmirza3458  3 года назад

      ED experience is not a must but good to have. I'd say if you want to work urgent care get at least one year ED RN experience prior to graduation of FNP school.

    What did you specialize in as an MSN NP?. Thank you thoroughly enjoying your videos. I am planning on applying to a direct MSN, as I have a non nursing bachelors. Any advice for direct MSN students

      Thank you Aisha! My certification is as a Family Nurse Practitioner. If you're planning to work outpatient like family practice, or urgent care/ER then FNP is the way to go. Other programs you can look into are psych, acute care, or pediatrics

      @@ahmedmirza3458, thank you so much. It does look like with an FNP we have more options.
      I was interested in Acute care,, preferably work in Urgent/ ER . however this seems to be more of an ICU approach only. With market saturation of NP and PA, was it difficult landing your first job?.

    • @ahmedmirza3458
      @ahmedmirza3458  3 года назад

      @@aishaahmed4651 acute care NP is usually for hospitalist or ICU positions. And also other hospital based specialties. Urgent care and ER are usually always staffed by FNPs. The job market is pretty saturated so I recommend doing a one year fellowship after graduation to help you land your first job and get experience

      @@aishaahmed4651 it seems like in all major cities it is difficult for new grads without experience to get a job. But not impossible. It helps to start building connections while in school

      @@ahmedmirza3458, thank you again!. That’s a great idea.
      The schools that I have applied to is somewhat hybrid ( MSN generalist ). Mon-Fri online. We have some classes & clinical on Saturdays & Sundays. Do you have any idea if employers have any aversion or are reluctant hiring students from such programs, it is CCNE Accredited though?
