- The gorilla troop at The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a little stressed today. Nneka is gone and Mokolo is looking for her. As you’ll see, Mokolo can't stop searching the 3 rooms for Nneka. He does not realize she has been taken by staff to have a procedure done at the Zoo's Vet Clinic. Freddie and Kebi can't relax either, so they keep their young ones close to them. Tusa, as you'll see, gets to collect all the alfalfa hay for herself.
Nneka was taken to have an Abscess Debridement done at the Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine. It is the onsite Vet clinic at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. You get to see Nneka just after her procedure.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

I hope Nneka feels better soon, that wound looked painful. Poor Mokolo, he looked really agitated. He wasn't happy one of his ladies was missing. It must be very confusing for the other gorilla's when one of the troop disappears suddenly and then just as suddenly reappears.

Wow, talk about high anxiety, Mokolo was looking everywhere for his missing family member. It was a hard day for everyone, well, except maybe Tusa. Still think Kunda needs some meat on her bones, she is just way to thin. Thanks spending so much time and effort on these videos, they are excellent. Getting footage of Nneka in surgery and afterwards was outstanding, although the abscess looked gruesome, it should heal in the next week or two.

Maybe they can send the dental crew to Japan and help Genki with her dental care. Kyoto Zoo doesn't seem to have a good handle on the issue. It doesn't hurt to ask them🙏

Great video Larry, just lancing and draining it will help with any pain or intense tenderness she may have had. Thankfully gorillas and other primates have amazing healing processes than we don’t have as humans and as bad as it may look it will probably heal in a couple weeks with little to no scaring. It truly amazing seeing how this process happens in primate species, especially like maraca’s (not sure of spelling) monkey, they have been studied because of their amazing healing process without any antibiotics or human intervention. The facility is tremendous and I’m glad you showed the part you could and people can see they really take the health and well fair of the gorilla’s and other animals species extremely seriously. So gorgeous how all the troop was missing Nneka, Mokolo was doing his job as the silverback and how both momma’s were keeping the babies closer (even Kayembe knew like you said) he stayed right there with momma. Your right about gorilla’s actually kissing their babies, it’s obvious they’re choosing to do it and Freddie was trying to help Kayembe relax with her sweet kisses. I’ve seen so many Gorilla’s knowingly kissing their babies now from zoo’s all over the world I can agree it’s obvious and no question the momma’s are making a concuss decision to kiss their little ones. Thanks again for your tremendous work and all the time and effort I know you put into all of your great video’s. ♥️🙏🏼♥️
Edit: Tusa is just so Tusa with all the alfalfa piled up is to funny and wonder if she feels safe having all around her because she seems to truly enjoy being surrounded by her hay. That was so funny.

Thanks for the update, Larry. Poor Mokolo - he was so worried! The whole troupe looked quite apprehensive - apart from Tusa, who seemed relieved to have free rein over the alfalfa 😂. Kayembe was clearly needing comfort from Freddie - it was so sweet when she kissed him as if to reassure him that everything was going to be ok. Poor Nneka - that was a big abscess and would have made her feel quite poorly. It’s great that they treated it before it caused any serious issues. I love that the zoo clinic is open to the public - not many zoos are willing to be so transparent when it comes to managing the health of their residents. Another huge stamp of approval for Cleveland Zoo! ⭐️ Great to know that Nneka is back with the family and on the road to recovery. ❤

Yes, it’s amazing to see them at work. That Sarah Allison Steffee center is amazing. They even have 4 separate work areas besides recovery and quarantine areas. I’m happy they let visitors watch. 👏👏😁

@brendabrinkmanpasichnyk3500 other members, no way! She was touching it for the first few days while it drained. Later, it seemed to dry up and I saw her touch it, but she was very gentle with it. Thank goodness, by 7th day it still looked gruesome (guess I’m I bit squeamish). But it was doing well according to staff. 👍
Shawna, ❤ I feel for Tusa, too. I know she had a different life, but I'm glad a lot of zoos have made big changes, now focusing on relationships and enrichment to ensure mental/emotional health for animals in their charge.

I had no idea their vet center was open viewing! The transparency of their entire primate department is phenomenal and they should be highly commended! To see some of the horror from zoos in Asia, to knowing we have this in the US is heartwarming. I want to ensure my grandchildren get the opportunity to observe these amazing creatures for generations to come, and this place is a great start! Thank you!

How they separate, I’m not sure. In mornings they emerge from night time habitat one at a time- within a minute or less from each other, that would be the good time to do it. Poor Mokolo, he notices right away if a gorilla does not emerge in the usual time- and immediately gets concerned. I believe they got to the abscess before it popped.
That Is Such A Small encloser for so many Gorillas, So sad.
There are 3 rooms , plus a lower level for night time.
From a viewer standpoint the gorillas look good. The mother doesnt seem to suffer from post partum issues like fur plucking. The silverback and offspring look well. However, Please tell me they have an outdoor enclosure? This brings back bad memories of when I worked with western lowland gorillas in the 80's and early 90's and they were all confined to such small spaces with not much room to move. I just found your channel today. Are you part of the WLLG species conservation program?
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Cleveland Ohio is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums of North America. These zoos aspire to create facilities with the highest standards in animal care and welfare. I am a resident of Cleveland and have paid for an annual membership that gives me access to the zoo year round. I don’t work for the zoo, I just love seeing the animals regularly and decided to create posts of what I see. I’m not familiar with the WLLG program. This zoo does participate in several (I think 7 conservation programs). And yes, they have an outdoor habitat. Most of my summer videos show their outdoor habitat - sometimes I specifically show 100% of it, although I don’t show all of it in every video- all viewers may not want that in every video.
@@larrysanimalsafari Thanks. I just came across your channel earlier today. The gorillas are beautiful and mama and her baby are picture perfect. It does look with their indoor enclosure that they tried to mimic as much of a natural habitat indoors as possible. And the silverback can keep a good eye on his family. I really love gorillas and during the time I worked with them was one of the worst times for the exotic pet trade in FL. Those poor WLLG were stuck in the smallest cages, you wouldn't believe. It was so cold and sterile. Some where placed alone and some housed together that were not a good match. And several had sores on their feet from the concrete. I still have nightmares to this day. However, it's so nice to see how far the species conservation has come, and all of the amazing gorillas we all grow to love. Thank you for your reply and all the information you've given. My local gorilla is Cenzoo, he loves to copy dance moves. 😊

Hay tres habitaciones interconectadas; si ve ventanas, cuente 15 de ellas. También tienen un hábitat en el piso inferior que ni tú ni yo podemos ver. También hay un patio exterior para ellos. No salen si la temperatura es inferior a 50 grados Farenheit y está húmedo.

How she get hurt
We don’t know how, just that some injury (scratch, scrape, etc). Caused bacteria to grow creating the abscess.

First time watching and I am not impressed with their indoor enclosure so went and looked at outside and it was disappointing.
🤷♂️ Well, at most zoos I find some things I really like and things that I don’t like. I’m just glad they have dedicated keepers who really care about doing all they can. Cleveland has plans for a new state of the art facility- just waiting for it to be built.
Right now, I try to enjoy what I have in my hometown. 😁
They all look very healthy. That was my first thought when I came across this video, but they all look well cared for and the mother doesn't look like she's suffering from post partum/hormone issues after birth, and has bonded well with her baby. Even if they were moved to a new enclosure you have to understand that new environments can be dangerous to them because of germs/bacteria. Which I'm sure their keepers and staff will take all precautions.

We lived in a town called BrookPark up until 1977 when my father died while on a motorcycle out near Columbia Station. Anyways, sorry for my “roots” story but I’m in Alabama now and we do not have good zoos here!! You can bet your sweet self that when I’m back in Cleveland, I’ll be hitting up your wonderful zoo!! It would be an honor to meet you too.
