But the, in those days if you had an 800 LSAT and a GPA above 3.9 with a major in a rigorous discipline you probably knew when you sent in the application that you were going to get in to Harvard and Yale and that if you were rather below those objective measures your chances were not particularly high.

I've never understood America's system about education and school, why should socioeconomic factors play a role, what if you can't pay that much, and if you can't pay that much you might as well lose the motivation to try and succeed. In my country everything is free, you even get paid to go to school, you can get about 500 USD a month for free. Or you can take a big loan and pay back in 25 years + you get the student aid with it also. I get about 1000 a month and I took 3000 USD in loans. I study math and physics and I'm also working on a research study.
