The Demon Core was a sphere of plutonium that was involved in two fatal radiation accidents when scientists tested it as a fissile core of an early atomic bomb. It was manufactured by the Manhattan Project, the U.S. nuclear weapon development effort during World War II. It was a subcritical mass that weighed 6.2 kilograms (14 lb) and was 89 millimeters (3.5 in) in diameter.
The core was prepared for shipment to the Pacific Theater as part of the third nuclear weapon to be dropped on Japan, but when Japan surrendered, the core was retained for testing and potential later use in the case of another conflict.
The two criticality accidents occurred at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico on August 21, 1945, and May 21, 1946. In both cases, an experiment was intended to demonstrate how close the core was to criticality with a tamper, but the core was accidentally put into a critical configuration.
Hey want to know another weird part of this story? After I published my piece, a criticality specialist that went with me to Chernobyl -- in reference to the core being melted down or used in another test -- said "is that what they tell the public?" The true fate of the core is classified.
wow
Holy shit
Oh fuck!
So now one will know the fate of the demon core. I bet it's in a crate in a classified warehouse somewhere in the United States
Huh...
Wow. DK really is a fantastic storyteller. To think this talent may have never been discovered if not for an April fool's joke.
Fantastic first episode
true. that april fools joke was one of the beat ideas they ever had
He's definitely improved as a storyteller since that first Detective Ridiculous. A lot more comfortable relaying information.
Dk is finally the main host and his first episode is about bricks
And also a demon. It was meant to be
WHEEZE! OMG I DIDN'T REALIZE!
Oh, shy sent me here, so I, will be here
Glad were all on the same page here
Wheres Shy tho
Same
@@byidlo-kun4078behind you...
same
DK the next time he sees Bricky: “When I left you I was but a learner. Now I am the master.”
I already knew the whole story, but DK does a very good retelling.
Looking forward to see where this show goes!
It's hilarious that DK can be competent with everything but 40K as he tends to forget most of the stuff they talk about
Gonna be interesting to compare this to the WTYP on the same subject.
The best lesson that can be taken away from this is no matter how skilled you are there is never an excuse for ignoring safety procedures, it gains you nothing you couldn't obtain while following them and only endanger yourself and others needlessly.
One of the more insidious elements of acute radiation sickness that DK alluded to was the part where after he got to the hospital Slotin appeared to be feeling better. Acute radiation sickness often includes a latency period where the body stops experiencing the initial symptoms and a person feels like they're better. But in actuality it's because the body's immune system has started to fail to the point where it can no longer induce many of those symptoms but the rest of the body hasn't yet degraded enough for other vital functions to stop working.
Kinda like hydrogen sulfide. It is very toxic, but it is easy to detect, even in low concentrations because it smells like rotten eggs, so you can also tell where it is coming from by the strength of the smell. Except, that when it reaches a high enough concentration, it overwhelms your smell receptors, and then you won't it's smell anymore.
Radiation accidents my favorite man made horror
The detective ridicules episodes are always my favorite love this podcast
Been following you kats since the Warframe days back when the star map was just a planet selector with missions displayed as tiles around each one.
Glad to see you're still kickin', enjoying the podcast.
Kyle Hill prepared me for this moment. 😅
Thanks for the channel shout out Shy, good stuff.
Awesome podcast fellas, DK your ability to weave amazing storytelling is just *chefs kiss* perfect. Looking forward to more cool tales from ya.
P.s 99.9 fm in my neck of the country is a contempory music station.
Oh shit we got DK hosting even more dark podcasts? Hype as hell for more!
Love it! A piece of WWII lore I was unaware of. Knew there was a third core, but never considered what they did with it. As a child near the end of the Cold War, Nukes have always been a part of the backdrop. I figured they just made another bomb with it and stored it.. which they did, after a couple scientists played with it fatally lol
Big yes!
Love DK's storytelling abilities. Looking forward to seeing you guys develop your own banter etc :)
DK on two mystery podcasts now? Cool and hello from Adric!
ADRIC!🤟
Something really bothers me about the Slotin accident. He had the audacity to put the other 7 scientists lives at stake! If u want to risk ur own life do it ALONE! But to take out all the safety measures & still run the test with 7 others in the room? Thats horrible!!!!
This was such a cool first episode. Can't wait to see what's to come 😁
LOVE IT!!!!
DK is such an amazing storyteller!
Starting off strong with this episode. Nice job
Great thing you have here guys. Keep going!🤘🤘🤘
So hyped! Came here from AdRic and can’t wait to tune in more!508th sub and can’t wait to see more for y’all!
These series of events were basically if Icarus saw his son fall into the sea, went "nah I'd win", and fly even HIGHER
Hyped for this ! Let's gooooo !
I love this new project, also the "Virgencita de guadalupe" candle on the radio studio a super nice touch, I already download this on spotify
This is awesome congrats Dk
Ooooh DEAMON CORE BABY!!!! KYLE HILL MOMENT
Cementing my place in the first episode. Proud of how far they've come.
Loving the New Podcast, y’all are amazing. If you’re hungry for more depressing radiation accidents I’d look into the story of Hisashi Ouchi.
Absolutely amazing work
I will be listening to your works with great expectation 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great first episode guys :)
Came here from Adeptus Ridiculus looking forward to what you got
The only sad thing here, is I've heard this story from several other YT creators.
Also, I love kawaii Demon Core-Kun!
Just finished the tau auxilary episodes. Here to help with the algorithm
Wish I saw this sooner, glad Shy brought me here cause I love this already
I think this is really cool so far, excited to see where it goes. Leaning into the late night radio aesthetic even more would be cool, like with music bumpers and fake commercials or sponsors or whatever, though that would be a ton of extra effort.
Also maybe I missed it but is this replacing Detective Ridiculous or is it just wholly different offshoot?
MORE DK MORE PODCAST THIS IS SO EXCITING
Ah a fine addition to my long form videos channel collection
Been here since the start. Also, funny screwdriver go woops
MORE HORRORS BEYOND OUR IMAGINATION EXPLAINED! By the emperor we have been blessed this day
Edit: great episode DK, Slap and Shy! DK keeping the suspense the entire way was, as per usual, was great! My only critique would to have a bit more banter but this is literally your first episode so things are gonna be awkward and such. Also gotta say, the atmosphere of this being a late night conspiracy broadcast is great
Yeah thats one of the big points people bring up and we definitely take note, co-host should get more involved into conversation.
AYOOOO? Let's go even more stuff from these folks
It brings me to tears to see Detective Ridiculous all grown up
Yep nice when next?
Going to be a great time listening to this (:
I am just now finding this! Subbed and I hope you guys become the next generation Coast to Coast am for us boomers.
This is such a perfect concept of a cursed item:
A Cruel Weapon, denied of it's purpose, still finds a way to bring death a suffering to the people around it.
If you look at the ages of Los Alamos researchers at the time, you see a bunch of people who would be new college grads or new PhD students in the present day, but they've been put in charge of handling humanity's freshest existential threat. As someone who was a physics student and worked in physics labs, I'm pretty sure that my classmates and I would have also liquefied our guts if there weren't strict lab safety protocols. Modern safety STILL didn't prevent me from sticking my hand in front of a high-power laser. Some of us might be adrenaline junkies, a lot of us just don't have common sense.
I am super impressed! Can’t wait for the creepy alien episodes!
Shy has sent me 🗿
Lovin it
The Inquisition have been alerted 🧐
I was curious as to how this would affect hosting going forward, more DK is always a plus
i could listen to this man talk forever
Sleep where they can't find you is a great sign off
Daredevil and showman isn't something you wanna hear concerning nuclear experiments.
there's a difference between awareness of mortality and being AFRAID of it
like people are aware they could be hit by a car but most still crosss the street. for better or worse, that's the strength of the human spirit. in this case unfortunately it was more of the latter
Great stuff!
But does zhis mean zhe detective ridicoulus iz over?
oh man, I literally wanted this one on detective ridiculous because it would terrify Bricky so much.
For reference, "criticality" or a k-value of 1 for nuclear material is the point where a single fission event produces enough neutrons to result in another fission event (over some time unit), thus being self-sustaining. It can be expressed as "for every atom split, another will be split". Nuclear reactor moderation specifically monitors this value. A nuclear bomb (as far as I'm aware) simply pushes the value of k as high as possible.
A very valuable lesson was learned here, don't fuck around to find out when it comes to radioactive materials and radiation. Radiation damages tissue on the atomic level unlike nothing else in the universe. Lots of scientists in the first half of the 20th century put their bodies on the line to learn this.
The movie "Fatman and Little Boy" is an ok depiction of the Manhattan Project and covers this, it's pretty gruesome.
My history teacher taught us about this and later taught us about demon core kun. Thought dk would mention him but he's kinda not none
Came from AdRic and I'm here because I do not care if it's not Warhammer lore now, tomorrow, or in ten thousand years. Loyalty is its own reward.
welcome back???
Dommy Mommy Shy commands Us to come here, and We obey
How did She get DK to sounds so Mature? Masterful Editing.
It's new, but diggin it
This is some good shit right here
Do Goiânia next!
Oh boy more stuff from dk and shy
DK I KNEW IT WAS YOU SPEAKING!!!
Just to make sure, will this be on Spotify?
Yes, on all podcast platforms!
Oh what a way to start us off, let's fucking go
Adeptus ridiculous sent me here. Praise be the omnisiah
Let's goooo
Limnic eruptions would be a good topic.
This os the Chuck Norris of nukes, it killed seven people and never even detonated
As a chilluminati fan i love this
Oh no not this! 😢
It wasn't the core's fault, they were sloppy and got hurt. #JusticeForRufus
Bricky and Shy sent me, said it'd be a blast...
Little did I know...
I just found out of this "spin off" by DK, I only have one question. Why does his voice sounds so different than from Adeptus Ridiculous?
The good old days
I do want to point out, because I think it's funny: When it comes to early US Nuclear Experiments, "Safety Violations" weren't really strictly enforced. So, yes, while accessing the lab alone is a huge violation of safety standards, "huge violation of safety standards" was basically every day down in the lab. It's charming, in a stupid sort of way.
shy army arrives
Silly DK, thinking that Fat man and Little boy were the most destructive...those were duds. Now imagine if they were actually working at full capacity...
Proud to be among the rest of us here
relatively speaking "humanity's maximum destructive potential" is just kind of unimpressive.
like compared to the bioweapons or natural disasters nature can unleash the nuke may as well be a 9mm handgun. or a minigun at best.
mosquitoes alone have killed more people than all of humanity's weapons combined
The demon core is the best way to grip check your friends
Those dumbos at Adeptus Ridiculous sent me here
Sweet! More man-made horrors beyond my imagination!
If you can't account for human error, the goal is doomed !! --HAL2000 "It's always due to human error"
Neuron reflector is a 40k concept. Neutron reflector makes more sense xD
And all this from an April's Fool day.
WWWHHHHOOOOOOOO
the man put the sun inside his chest
How can nuclear physicists be so very very dumb.
Twice.
One of many here
This story was just ridiculous
Cool shit, just wanted to say, 99.9 is a super-conservative classic rock station where I live. Makes the name a little funny.
Fat man, little boy and the third one would've been "the karen"
Some people say they put a baby in it.
