Correction. this is my house and it was built by Phillip Lenz in 1895. Lenz was president of a building company located on Jefferson avenue and he was also a stonecutter. As of January 1920, again according to the census records, Henry Griesedieck, his wife Anna and sons William and Henry along with daughter Ursula lived in the house for many years. Their servant was Catherine. Mr.
Griesedieck came from Stromberg, Germany. The newel post lamp is not original it was purchased in the 1980s in Paris along with the wallpaper on the ceiling of the 2nd floor. It is Zuber wallpaper and made from print blocks going back to the 1700s. My family and I lived there for close to 35 years

The city still has houses that can be rehabed not as many as in the 90’s I looked at a house in tower grove park it was beautiful had I think 14 bedrooms and a bunch of fire places it was only 120,000 now it’s probably worth 300,000 easy but back then the neighborhood was shady

That's not a Richardsonian Romanesque house; it's a stone-fronted Queen Anne home. It takes more than just stone to make a Romanesque house. Also, that is a tower, not a turret. A turret never meets the ground, but begins in mid-air and pierces the roofline. A tower begins at the ground and pierces the roofline.

Hey Ken. The door hardware around the door knob is called an escutcheon. The sconces under the arches are corbels. The window over the master room bed is called an eyebrow window. I am not criticizing just saying that these features are rarely used anymore and people don’t know their proper names. PS. I rehabed several houses in the city. One of the houses in old dutch town had a giant arch window but it would of cost close to 100k to fix right. It was a 2 story with a detached bungalow unit. I flipped the property to a friend way more talented than myself. It had a flat roof that needed to be replaced and it needed to be tuck pointed. It needed to be completely rewired it had the old wiring from the early 1900’s. It needed new plumbing all the way to the street that is a job. There were actually 2 tenants one in the bungalow that had sewage backed up and he would shoot rats coming in. The lady who lived in the main unit had at least 8 cats so you can imagine how it smelled and I don’t know anyone who knows how to get cat urine out of a house. I bought it from my landlord who was in his 80’s and grew up in Nazi Germany very nice man who told me the neighbors hid him from the gustapo. His wife was angry that I flipped it but I gave him the amount he asked for. This happened before the housing crash of 08. Sorry for being so long winded

To modern for the house. I love a beautiful old house and walk into the kitchen and either find the original kitchen cabinets or a good reproduction. Prescott Arizona is full of homes in the Historic District. Some are now used for other purposes, but many are residences. Check it out.

If this was out in the country on a good size piece of land , I'd definitely try to snatch this up. Big and we'll take care of!

This house is beautiful but it’s actually pretty common for St. Louis, except for some of the extra features like the turret space. Many beautiful houses in St. Louis.

Yeah but the areas around these homes are not the best! South side is getting more and more crime and yeah this home is another gorgeous gem but you can’t live inside the home and not go out! Yes great home full of history but location location location is so important! I want to set this home somewhere west St. Louis then it would be perfect!

What a treat to hear an American actually pronounce the word 'foyer' property.

So far, In all the examinations of Olde Houses, I have not noticed the "Coffin Doors" I remember in olde houses. A special door in the side of houses for the entry/removal of coffins. In the olden days the family would have the dead on display in the parlor of the residence (funeral homes did not exist as we know them today.) Are these door really non-existent in homes or ignored because the thought is unpleasant?

It's a tower if it extends the whole way. It's a turret if it's alone. Or only on the top two floors or some similar combination.

The house really is VERY beautiful! Love the rounded edges, staircase and ceilings. My concerns are that the kitchen isn't very functional with the stove so far from the sink and doesn't fit the space it's in. An island with a sink would have been so much better. There's only one shower which is on the uppermost floor in the master suite. All that would require changes to plumbing, so I guess previous owners didn't want to invest in that. Thank you for the view!

Adding another sink to the island would really increase the functionality of the kitchen, in fact, that was my first thought when we did our walk through. -Ken

Random comment: do we have a good, quality rec for historic restorations, such as the beautiful stained glass window at the landing of the stairs that had been sagging? Would not know where to begin!

@M.J.G. all of restoration is costly it takes money and time to keep a historic home like the one shown in the video afloat
