- In this video, we'll be tying a herringbone knot based on a 7x6 Turks Head. It's a great knot, and has quickly become my favorite to use on all types of whips. During these difficult times, I hope that this video helps to lift your spirits a bit. Isolation, combined with feelings of anxiety and fear of the unknown can be incredibly overwhelming, I know. Nick, your videos have helped me tremendously. I have made i believe about 15 nylon whips all using your methods and im hooked. Thank you for this tutorial. Let me try to give back to you now. My last 3 whips, I've been using rubber leg tips for the foundation. They come in 4 packs at any hardware store and different sizes. Your choice of staples, one wrap of hockey tape, a video of yours on which knot and off you go...lol. They're great for conchos too.
The only thing I wouldn't recommend about these though is the fact that they probably cost a lot more than bulk leather. I could probably make 50 leather foundations out of only a few big pieces of leather for about the same price as what a couple 4 packs of leg tips would cost.
@@MrJdmboy10 The price is about $3 dollars a pack and 2 were used on 2 whips I sold for over $200. It's always fun to experiment though and sometimes an extra dollar may be worth it or sometimes not.

I started making whips bc of ur video lol.......I probably rewinded the video a dozen times, and when I finally finished it, I realized I had made the awesomest and shittiest whip ide ever seen lol I was hooked and been kinda following along and comin up with my own stuff here and there and I've had alot of fun the past few years building much better whips and not needing to watch a video to guide me thru it lol anyhow long time listener first time caller thanx for the all the tutorials I dont no what I'd do if I couldn't twist up a whip and clear the mind
Nick, I haven't made a whip yet and maybe I never will. But I liked your videos right from the beginning. Very well shown and narrated and one can see your progress although they were very good from the beginning on. I like how you show the Herringbone knot in the way that it fits your heel like the Rawhide braiders do. I hope some Paracorders will find their way to your tutorial. Although you have only just learned the knot you show it in a pleasant way. The x's at the top are usually not counted, but the round shape where the strand comes out of the knot and then goes into the knot again - the bights. Of course here you concentrate on the x's. If you have time and interest to really learn the turkshead knot systematically I can wholeheartedly recommend Tom Hall's "Introduction to Turk's Head Knots". It is a fantastic tool for self learning. I taught myself everything by working with it and I have come quite far, if I may say so. He has a recent additional YT channel, too, which I will link in a second post.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I fish a lot and have been interested in wrapping my own pliers (I love anything pink and aqua). This tutorial helped me make the bottom wrap of the pliers handles instead of the Turks head wobble which leaves it more exposed

Great tutorial on how to tie and expand a TH on the end of a spherical object. I’ve been tying and expanding on mandrels for some time but never on the end of a handle; same process but from a different perspective. Taking your time allows me to relate your moves to what I’m used to doing. Some presenters move too quickly which makes it a bit difficult to follow, even if one is familiar with the knot. Your lighting is also very good, which can also be a fault in some videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Donald.

Whips.... since I'm stuck in doors, I want to start a new kangaroo hyde whip.
I don't know how to make either knot I just started waxing my whips. My 18' indy whip is much smoother after waxing but dam is it a workout to get moving. I'm gonna find the turks head knot video to give that a try first. You're a great teacher, Nick I love the videos
When using white paracord, is there anything special you do during day the waxing process to ensure the white doesn’t dull, fade, or other colors bleed into it?
In my experience the colors don't ever bleed into the whites. I just make sure to keep the wax dirt-free and all has been ok so far.

I'm a bit confused on materials. Do I need stuff with adhesive backsides? The items listed in the description dont have that. Do I want adhesive neoprene and pleather?

Hey there, I got a question related to your very successful 6ft bullwhip tutorial from 2013:
As for the last layer of the whip you use 6 strands of paracord (20 20 19 14 9 5) and I got myself about 250ft black and a bit over 80ft red paracord as I want the whip to be in that color combination.
So my question is, which strands (according to your braiding shown in the video) should be red and black to result in a quite nice pattern?
As this is my first attempt ever I really don't have any clue :/

Any color on any size cord will create the same effect you’re going for, as long as you’re consistent with the pattern design and there’s equal number of strand for both colors, length won’t matter
Got the stuff ready to do this. And.....I realized I don't have a fid. Damn near impossible to do this without a fid. I gave up.

It doesn't work like it. The 3rd colour would break the pattern of the second. Herringbone Knots are quite complex. The second knot here is not the same turkshead. It is a sobre one vs. the regular first. It means it is an inverted version of the first one. With the first 7L 6B turkshead the standing part is coming out under it's own bight. With the white, second one the standing part is lying over its own bight. That is what makes this knot possible.
Is that a regular 3ft snakewhip?
So why is it called a 5 x 4 knot, or a 7 x 6 ?
