these are incredible. love how you synthesize all these elements and are still able to make something that isn't just derivative but sounds like you! 10/10
I remember a while ago reading about how he recorded for emma, forever ago. he used a cheap audio interface and a free version of pro tools. he also used a 120 dollar ribbon mic for recording a lot of it. he also used an e bow and a chacon. really not a lot of gear, especially not expensive gear. he was really sick and his girlfriend broke up with him and kicked him out and his band kicked him out. he packed up all his stuff and left north carolina and went and stayed at his families hunting cabin in wisconsin in the winter and stayed there by himself where he wrote and recorded the album. one of his friends who he showed it to mixed it and put it up on tumblr without him knowing and the rest is history. inspiring story.
This is an excellent behind-the-scenes look at how to be a great cover band (with derivatives). And it sounds great. You made some beautiful music, so thanks! Subscribed.
Been wanting to mix Bon Iver inspiration into my music for the longest time and this really helps to nail down exactly how and why Justin's music sounds the way it does. Great video!
I reproduced a lot of Bon Iver’s production techniques during my studies as an audio engineer. I remember this slate pro audio dragon (= a 1176 with a lot of saturation/distortion options) to smash the drums with. One drumtake hardpanned left and one right. If the groove it played in the pocket, you will hear the hihat flying around in the stereofield. I’m talking about the 33God drums ofcourse. He did it a second time when he collaborated with The Japanese House (in the chorus). That shit sounds amazing.
Had a song stuck in my head all day but just the “on the mantelpiece” line and couldn’t for the life of me remember where it was from…and then it clicked. It’s such a great tune and testament to you guys nailing the brief.
yep! in the album stems, there’s a note with the patches that were used - i think the 2 r ‘super e.p.’ & ‘analogpad2.’ bruce hornsby also loooooooved the m1 stock piano sounds; u can hear them everywhere on the way it is & other songs on the record
Damn, the high pitched samples in mantelpiece sounded like James blake too! Kinda funny since james got to work on iMi in vernon's last album i,i. Anyways, I was craving for some bon iver songs and this video scratched that itch! I know im late but this shit is AMAZING. Thanks for putting so much effort into it! subbed.
You’re an epic triple threat. Great singer musician and engineer, oh yea producer and arranger. So quintuple threat? Seriously that’s for the info and the inspo.
wow, That was so freaking cool and you all delivered. I wonder if yall know of Hayden Calnin. Aussie artist, but would be so cool to see the breakdown of his orchestra-sounding music. You got my sub!
How did you get the vocal texture on the sampled 'over soon' bits? Sounds like you can hear the mechanical keys if the OP1 through the mic? And the voice sounds slightly distorted?
Wow that song at the end is too good!
BenLevin!!

What is a chacon? Also, he used an SM57 for the album :)
I love the room with the saxophone!!!
I legit grinned through this entire video. Perfection. I bet Justin would be flattered.

Been wanting to mix Bon Iver inspiration into my music for the longest time and this really helps to nail down exactly how and why Justin's music sounds the way it does. Great video!

Great video. Killer song at the end. Love Bon Iver. Y'all did a great job showing how you can take what someone does and make it your own.
I can’t believe you guys haven’t released Mantelpiece! It’s fantastic

you really nailed it with this video, great content.
There's an interview (I think on Kimmel) where he says he used the M1 for the beth/rest sound but they're both super close - great vid

it's 'pad piano,' not 'super e.p.,' apologies -- it's the same sound, just treated differently
Wow!
Featuring Josh .-)
4:50 i think the keyboard is a korg m-1
seen an interview of jv talking about it

2:53 How did you achieve the degraded quality of the base vocal loop?
I think I used sketch cassette 2 (a really neat plug in by aberrant I think it’s only about $20)
Ok. THat was dope.

A lot of the sound of 22,a million is also very much inspired by Vernon’s prior collaborations with Blake , and also just them hanging out lol.
u R so real!!!!
awesome vid. Would love to see you do a Beach House how to video, particularly something in line with one of the newer albums
Beach House is definitely on my list!

Microtech Gefell GmbH I'm not sure exactly which model number
You made my day❤
This video and your original song are awesome! Let's ask Justin and Taylor to record a 3rd music together ;)
I’d love a whole justice cow album of bon iver…
I thought the keys on Beth/Rest was a KORG M1. Do you know any more about how the song was made?
Wow😮
You’re an epic triple threat. Great singer musician and engineer, oh yea producer and arranger. So quintuple threat? Seriously that’s for the info and the inspo.

Does your brother do session playing? I'm in London, but curious to know if we could work remotely?
