    I got a quote for ALMOST $1400 from Toyota of Berkeley, CA to replace the fuel pump and sending unit, parts were quoted at $468. After watching this clearly communicated video, I bought the pump on Amazon for $30 and swapped it out. Took me all of 2 hours. and required only 12mm and 14 mm sockets, 14 mm spanner, adjustable wrench, needle nosed pliers, phillips screwdriver, a hose and a gas can. I didn't find it necessary to remove the inner fender plastic on my 1998 tacoma. Thanks 2CarPros!

    I replaced the fuel pump on my 97 Tacoma today. Took the bed lose and raised up the front of it and propped it up, changed it in thirty minutes. Hardest part is getting all of the air out of the lines, dont think its just gonna fire up right when you put it on. You will wind on the starter a million times before it will start sucking gas. Use starter fluid if needed. Running like a sewing machine, after leaving me on the side of the road last week lol. Tow dollies.

      It would take me 30 min. just to get all the tools together. Did you take all the bolts loose and the gas filler hose? Did you need to remove the taillights? I have a '96 Tacoma. Is it best to disconnect the fuel line and turn the engine over to make sure it's the fuel pump? I mean it won't start unless I use some spray and I don't know what else it could be, lol. One part he left out was to loosen the passenger side bed bolts (3 per side 17mm)
    And remove the drivers side bed bolts. Lift the bed up and slide a pair of 2x4’s or a piece of 4x4 under the bed behind the driver rear wheel where the frame and bed touch. That makes getting it out, with the filler neck still on, a whole heck of a lot less fighting and cussing!! Don’t forget to remove the drivers side tail light and unplug the harness from the light, then push the harness under the bed to avoid possibly damaging the plug.
    One other option, but not necessary, is to remove the rear section of driveshaft.
    While it’s out, check the universal joints!!

    And to think , it was so easy 40 + years ago when the fuel pump was mounted on the engine block , but this is progress 🤦‍♂️ , all auto manufacturers should have to have an access panel on the vehicle above the fuel pumps just for this reason ,$ 1000.00 plus in mechanics fees for a $30.00 pump replacement , ridiculous , A+ to the guys instructions on the replacement though 👍

    Thanks for the video! I've got a question for anyone who might be able to answer. I've got a 2006 Tacoma 4wd TRD off road & it started having a random hesitation during acceleration that started about a year after I purchased it. I baby it as much as possible. Synthetic oil & filter change every 5k like clockwork. Since the hesitation started about four years ago, it's never thrown a code. I've checked & replaced any and all fuses, used fuel injector cleaner a couple times a year, change the spark plugs, the MAF sensor and the PCV valve. Every time I've changed something I unplugged the battery for at least fifteen minutes to let the ECU reset. Nothing has fixed this random hesitation I'm getting and I'm ready to sell the truck private party. The last two ideas I wanted to try was the throttle control sensor and the fuel pump. There's two different parts, one is a fuel pump module that's $2-300 and the other is a fuel pump kit for $100. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

      Quick update and question, I just cleaned the throttle body sensor as thoroughly as possible & it helped a little but the random hesitation is still there. The only parts left to replace are the actual throttle body sensor and/or fuel pump. To avoid replacing both of them, does anyone know if either fuel pump or throttle body sensor would throw an obd code? Thanks so much in advance!

    Great video; I am not changing the fuel pump, I am interested in see how to drain fuel without getting screwed like I did so I watched this video in hopes it would show me how to fix my dumbness; I inserted a blue hose to drain liquids, one that has a metal end with a ball in it to drain the fuel now it is stuck in there and would not come out! I inserted it pretty deep trying to reach the bottom of the tank so I think it did but the hose is too thick to now come up, it is not just any hose that one can insert in there, it has to be a very thin one or it will get stuck! Now there are no videos to show what to do to get it out and I am hoping I do not have to disassemble the tank to do so because I do not have a lift like in this video and forget the dealers! My weekend project screwed for lack of knowledge! It seems there is a flap in the tank neck on the bottom. My truck is a 2000 Toyota Tacoma.

    Can you explain the gas syphoning? How do you get the gas to come up the tube?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  3 года назад +1

      You use compressed air next to the tube to create a vacuum in the tube which sucks gasoline out of the tank. Thanks for watching!

      @Pop Warner, I'm doing pump on 2000 Tacoma 2wheel. 180k fuel filter change could help pump last longer?

    On my 1994 the fuel line sub-assembly looks the same, with a flare fitting on each end, connecting the steel line from the pump housing to the steel fuel line on the frame. Trouble is, both ends will not release. I can get the nut loose that pushes in the flare of the tube into the ends of the flexible connector line, but after about one turn each one locks up and will not continue to loosen. The tube is then loose on the steel lines on each end and there is no rust to speak of. However, I can't get either end to come off more than about one turn. Is there something I am missing here as the problem? I have removed many such flare fittings in other applications, as with brake lines, with never encountering this problem and now TWICE on the same line? I am thinking of cutting the line and then using compression fittings with barbs to then replace with a flexible fuel hose that is 30R9 rated for injection systems. However, concerned about using brass compression fittings on fuel lines and not sure if this would be safe and secure. I want to figure this out and get any needed parts before I dig further into this as the vehicle is running now. I fear if I try to force the nuts off it will strip something or otherwise destroy the sub-assembly even if it would come off without cutting it. Again, both nuts come loose on the flexible part of the fuel line near the petrol tank and all seems fine, but then as I try to remove either nut it jams and stops dead and will not continue. Tks.

    Do it in the way it was demonstrated in the video, much Easter this way , disconnecting the filler cap assembly and lining it back up major pain , plus more time removing bed , I could be wrong , let's have a contest in time each way takes ??? Ya!

    Why in God's name would anyone put an electric pump inside a gas tank bolted to the bottom of a truck? Is this easier than removing the bed? I've done this on an F-250 Heavy Duty, and it was a bitch. Thanks for posting. Great step by step video. (Rusty)
