I think this is one of the most comprehensive appraisal of a vehicle. The presenter is leaving no stone unturned. I like this very much. Thank you indeed.
Thanks goodness I watched this vid, and most of the owners are commenting on your accuracy. I was looking at getting a preowned LR4, but this has changed my mind based solely on what parts will cost here in South Africa. Great vid, and super entertaining too lol
It’s a luxury 4x4 so it will cost a bit more on maintenance than other basic 4x4’s, if well maintained it will serve you well. I have a 2012 SDV6 SE LR4 which gets serviced every 10 000km and it’s been all over South Africa no problem. Next year it will be doing Zambia.
I drove an LR4 loved it it's better than any Jeep better than any Ford and it got better gas miles on road and off road and it handles a lot better than both of them
This is great! Thanks for sharing. I own a 2005 LR3 and I just bought a 2011 LR4. That should let you know that I really love these cars. Having owned the LR4 for 15 years, I am indeed familiar with the maintenance issues that come with these vehicles as I have experienced a good deal of them. Fortunately, I do have a mechanic who has become familiar with the car through me. With that said, I wish I had seen this video before I bought my 2011 LR4.
I see a lot about the timing chain issues on the 2012-2014. Is this issue persistent on the 2011 LR4's? how common is this? It's easy to research and feel as though it's on ALL of them but I'm sure it's not happening on every LR4? I am looking at a 2011 now so curious.
I have an '08 LR3 with the 4.4L V8 and it is currently at 208k mi (335k km). This video is extremely accurate from my experiences with my LR3. The only thing not mentioned is that the 4.4L V8 has a tendency to crack thermostat housings and they are an absolute pain to replace. I just did mine and nothing about it was easy but it could cost $950 or more from a mechanic because of where the housing is on the engine. Definitely do a thorough inspection of the vehicle before buying and if possible find an LR specialist to look it over before you buy it, this is what I did. The LR3 will serve you well if you take care of it in return and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
I totally agree. I also have the V8. Amazing car. I too replaced the thermostat housing. Did it myself in a couple or 3 hours. The part was £50 approx. I am not a pro mechanic, but merely a novice. Very doable fix.
Great review!👍I have the 4.4 V8 from 2005.... it is a good car and exactly what I need. I am driving it now for 6 years ...the most expensive repair was the air compressor, because I had to go to LR to change it. At 100.000 miles I had to change the O-rings for the injectors, no big deal... in fact the car is so good, that we decided to keep it forever! I am quite confident that it will survive another 15 years and then it will be already an oldtimer. This I wouldn't have told about my Audi A6 ... the worst car in my life!
Hans S. I appreciate this comment I’m heavily considering buying one of these. It’ll be my daily for the next 6 years and I’m pretty handy myself so I’m ok with doing maintenance on it. It’ll be my first rover.
Owner of a 2010 Lr4. 3.0 diesel and Your review is spot on many small issues with the car all repair bills not inc. fuel and tax over the last two and a half years are over 8k. My car is a low spec GS no sunroof less stuff to go wrong. I still enjoy owning and driving this vehicle. Seeing the depreciation and faults on much newer 4x4 SUV’s eg. A mate recently had 22k hit after three years owning a 2014 RR Sport when trading in for a newer RR Velar. Makes my running costs feel almost reasonable for owning the same brand of car. I enjoyed your review very much.
Update - avoid any older Discovery 4 with side steps, running boards, rock sliders etc. . These are a moisture trap beneath the plastic lower sill trim and the body bottom side sills.
Good review... Had my D3 V8 HSE since 2019. Only minor issues so far are 1. Power steering leakage due to worn out gasket. This cost me +-$80 incl labor 2. Water leak into the cabin from left pillar. Still havent figured about the cause. 3. "Transmission Fault, HDC Inoperative,Special Programs Off" message for 2 weeks now. Will take it for the repairs in 2022. Other than these I m happy with the 2 years of ownership of this beast. Best offroader and onroader.
Hi. I'm planning on getting a Disco 3 or 4. This crankshaft failure scares me tho,the thoughts of engine seizing at any time is scary. Whic model would you recommend
you have forgot to mention one important thing about 3.0 D V6 engine issues, inlet manifold crack that will happen on every 3.0D engine.. sooner or later, intercooler housing can crack and IC hoses can have a leak.. alternators are often broken
Excellent buyer's guide. The few things I think you missed. The AC - corroded lines on vehicles fitted with rear AC. Also seems compressor failure a bit more prevalent on d4s. Plastic coolant parts fail prematurely on d3 and 4 but more of a problem on d4 (crossover pipe). I had d3 HSE for over 10 yrs. ~300k - the 4.4 v8 was probably best LR engine ever. Change synthetic oil every 6 - 8k kms and 4.4 will last many 100s km. Later models 24k oil change interval ridiculous. No wonder they have problems.
I will say this LR4 are way more reliable than the internet thinks and the land cruiser way less reliable I am always amazed how an idea becomes fact on the internet because everyone uses other internet references as a source.
@@Yogi5D @ATX-CVPI Why does the Land Cruiser community always, and I mean ALWAYS, need to give this kind of reactions? Why do you feel a dent in your manhood each time Land Rover is mentioned? (Even bigger question: If you feel this sentiment, why do you watch Land Rover video's?) greetings, a non-Offroad-Volvo driver.
Very interesting and accurate. I have owned three different Discovery models over the past 24 years (an L2 for 6ys, L2 for 8ys and L3 for the last 10ys). They are fabulous vehicles and I wouldn't be without one, but they eat money for breakfast. My current 06 L3 has cost me £25k to maintain over 10 years for all servicing and repairs including tyres, etc. Unfortunately I am not a mechanic and therefore I have relied on paying a garage (usually a LR dealer). Fortunately the 2.7 engine has been sweat with no issues, but I have had nearly all the other things you mentioned. Most recently (last 5 years), the whole of the air suspension system replaced over several visits to LR to find the problem (!), corroded brake pipes, lower front suspension arms, glow plugs, prop shaft, tailgate latch, bonnet latch cable, and there are still outstanding issues with the rear axial, and a small leak from the steering rack. Grrrr. I still love my LR and therefore divorce is not an option until a vehicle as versatile and spacious, better looking, more comfortable, cheaper to run comes along. I have been trying to decide whether to keep my 06L3 and continuing to pay higher maintenance cost or buy a younger (ie 2011/12/13) L4? Although I could buy a more recent L4, the 'malus' tax payable on importing it into France would be £5k+ as well as the hefty depreciation and purchase price. What would you do? - is it better to keep the 06L3 devil that I know or take a risk that I may have the same issues again on the 8 to 10 year old L4 over the next 5 years?
Great review. I am going to purchase one of these myself but intend to service and repair it myself. The only way to own one of these is to repair it yourself or have lots of money to burn lol. Thanks for sharing.
Best disco 3-4 comparison video. Thanks for pointing out possible issues with both. Looking to buy my first disco. Deciding whether 3 or 4. My only negative with disco 4 is the 19 inch rims. Harder to find higher profile off road tyres. Cheers.
Excellent excellent excellent review..I would also change Radiator at around 150,000 Miles in LR3..the hose connections on Radiator are weak ..when they fail coolant just bleeds out..so may fry your engine having no coolant..and if you have a Cat that goes out doors will likely kill your Cat..we lost our beloved Chester due to this sht.
I was checking out a 2010 LR4 TdV6 recently and at cold start there was a distinct rattle from engine bay for a few moments. Does the guide tension issue affect the diesel as well as the petrol engines you describe ? 🙏
yes, the diesel engines also have chains, but these small chains with tensioners are only on the camshafts. The tensioners will get worn over time(depends on oil changes and mileage) and that can cause a rattle. If its rattling then its good to replace it since: Tensioner failure = big engine damage. but there are also cases of bad oil pumps and that can also cause: rattle, prematurely worn camshaft chains and later worn rod bearings or main crankshaft bearings, so fun and expensive stuff It would be a good idea to check the oil pressure on this engine
Hello, I have a 2005 Land Rover LR3 and it seems as if the transmission fluid is leaking from the bottom of the oil pan underneath the car. When we last started it up and drove it a little bit, transmission fluid looked like it was raining underneath the car. Do you know where the leak could possibly be? Thanks, sorry for the bump.
Fantastic video 👍💪 A beautiful machine. What is Land Rovers problem? Why so many quality issues? I'm considering buying a Disco 3 or 4. Anybody know a good maintenance manual (apart from Haynes) should one wish to attempt some DIY and preventative maintenance?
would you recommend going for a 2013 (last year of the V8) or a 2016, if both had same mileage and maintenance history? I have heard that the 2013 is less of a hassle to repair than the V6's
Ok, have not found any comparisons between GX 470 and the LR3. I'm looking at an 06 GX470 w/ 175k miles and a 05 LR3 with 105K miles. The LR3, original owner, WELL maintained, $10K. GX470, 3 owners, great maintenance records, $18k. Thoughts?
I thought about one until I found out that the whole body of the car has to come off the chassis if you want to replace a turbo... Clever design.. NOT!
Good video.its good car.but your are wrong about disco 4.it's have more cranck problems than disco 3 and no matter what year.but people who whatsing this video need to gnow that disco is not bad car.it need bit more care and then its best car ever.(my 2007 disco 3 is better to drive on highway than 2017 landcruiser what i and have drived same or better on offroad) so good things not meaned to be less expensive.sorry english is not my main language.
Muitos mecânicos comenta que os motores 2.7L diesel só presta dos anos 2005/6 ,que são mais confiáveis do 2007 a diante começa a aparecer os problemas citado no vídeo é só vai piorando quando passa para o 3.0L
Brilliant video - many thanks. I have owned a Discovery 4 (UK ) so 3 litre diesel sequential twin turbo V6 - my local Garage have warned of Turbo pipe issues - has anyone had or aware of this problem? My Garage are recommending a routine change to latest variant which I am Ok with so long as the cost is valid - i.e. it really is an issue and worth doing - any feedback would be great,
In all honesty, I think the issues are not really mind-blowing especially considering he's talking about Disco 3 and 4, seven (7) engines, and 3 transmissions. I think it's more the cost of maintenance that creates this reliability issue. I don't own one so can't say much but have friends with them and they are ok with.
Yeah I think that’s the case. The buyers probably think they did a good deal by buying a discovery for the same money as a new Ford until they visit the workshop for maintenance
Sounds like dropping a 50 pound stack of clymer repair manuals on my pecker would be less painful then having to own one of these land rovers that break down all the time. Will stick with my trouble free 4runner. great video thanks
Hi, thanks for the video I tried one LR4 few days ago and it was having some vibrations when you accelerate then it disappears could it be this torque converter ? because other than that the car is just running fine and smooth, gears are shifting smoothly thank you !
@@duonglam8055 2005 lr3, 60 000miles. No problems yet, besides a few cracks in plastic from previous owners bumping things. I plan on taking a look at suspension linkages soon, just to check and keep on top of anything.
seb berg wish your LR3 last longer with you man 😉 I will do test drive the 2014 LR4 tomorrow and check all service record before getting into problems. Anyway, I still love Disco design
so is the 2012 3.0L diesel the worst in terms of reliability? i’m interested in one with 182k km with full history in Land rover, i’d like to avoid big problems
Could you please tell me where this Dealer located? I would like to go there to choose one.cause I'm looking for a Landrover Discovery.Salisbery Maryland.U S A.
Can you help me ?? My dad wants to buy a used car from Germany under 18.000€ which would be spacious, good looking, automatic, fuel efficient and most importantly reliable with 5 doors and it needs to have under 60.000km for reliability reasons
Are VW Passat’s or Skoda Superb’s available for 18.000€ with less then 60.000km? Otherwise the Skoda Octavia or VW Golf Variant will be an option. I’m quite sure that the last 2 are available for 18.000€ with under 60.000km’s driven
Offcourse you want a BMW 3 touring, Audi A4 Avant... but that just isn’t possible for 18.000€ with under 60.000km. Maybe it is, but then it literally has no options.
Thank you for your reviews, for me those videos are very useful! I just wanted to ask you if you can do a review about the Freelander 2? Because I want to choose between dhe Discovery 3 or the freelander 2.
Also had a UK 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE for 4 years. Bought it "Used Approved" when it was 3 years old with 45,000 miles from Main Dealer (Lookers) with 1 year Land Rover extended warranty. 2 months before warranty expired it was dripping oil from engine. 5 visits later and being fobbed off each time by Main Dealer assuring me nothing to worry about, it broke down 150 miles from home and just still in warranty! I strongly complained to Land Rover UK telling them the back story to this point and to be fair they were superb moving forward. The supplying Main Dealer picked up the recovery costs and the hire car (a brand new 520 BMW - superb!). 6 weeks later, 2 half shafts, 1 Haldex box (apparently controls power delivery between front & rear axles) and a crankshaft rear oil seal replacement and we got our Freelander 2 back with nothing to pay. Needless to say, the Main Dealer never saw us again nor will they ever! The remaining 3 years of happy ownership and 27,000 miles were trouble free with maintenance by a local Land Rover specialist.
There used to be a saying, “If you wish to go into the Outback drive a LR - but if you wish to get back out, drive a Land Cruiser.........unfortunately nowadays the LR won’t even get you into the Outback in the first place!
What do you think of the 2015 LR2? A local Chevy dealership of mine has one for $15,500 with (approx) 84,000 miles, and I'm thinking about buying it and sucking up (pun intended) the high gas bill. I'm also thinking they'll go lower just to get it off their lot since it's not a Chevy. Thoughts?
The Discovery 4 interior is way better. For build quality, looks and material quality. I think the Discovery 3 interior has aged badly while the Discovery 4 interior has aged beutifully
I,ve been begging you ll guys to tell me where you are located. I would like to go there and chose a Landrover Discovery.I never heard from you ll.if you not in U.S let me know ok.
LOL I f you want own one you have to fix it yourself or it will cost you a fortune. How bad do you want one? I will purchase one but will fix it myself.

You can ask Christian and Vera on "LR Time" channel. I would advise you opt for the devil you know
Great video. Very informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Great review. I am going to purchase one of these myself but intend to service and repair it myself. The only way to own one of these is to repair it yourself or have lots of money to burn lol. Thanks for sharing.
Did you purchase? I'm seriously considering getting one
I really appreciate this video, thank you for investing so much time and giving us so much information about the Discovery!
THIS GUY IS F....G AWESOME!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT JOB!!!!:)
Best disco 3-4 comparison video. Thanks for pointing out possible issues with both. Looking to buy my first disco. Deciding whether 3 or 4. My only negative with disco 4 is the 19 inch rims. Harder to find higher profile off road tyres. Cheers.
So, did you buy one?
I'm looking for D4 right now.
Had the lr4 for 5 years and no problems
I have 2013 LR 4 SDV6 HSE with engine issues the injectors r not working well , please advice I want to change the engine which has 160,000km on it
Excellent excellent excellent review..I would also change Radiator at around 150,000 Miles in LR3..the hose connections on Radiator are weak ..when they fail coolant just bleeds out..so may fry your engine having no coolant..and if you have a Cat that goes out doors will likely kill your Cat..we lost our beloved Chester due to this sht.
If its rattling then its good to replace it since: Tensioner failure = big engine damage.
but there are also cases of bad oil pumps and that can also cause: rattle, prematurely worn camshaft chains and later worn rod bearings or main crankshaft bearings, so fun and expensive stuff
It would be a good idea to check the oil pressure on this engine
My LR4 have 90% of problem that you listed, including breaking the crankshaft on 3.0L diesel engine.
I’m looking for LR4 2008 3.0 diesel could I buy it?
@@Songvat168 Than it would be a LR3 ;-) - LR4 are build from 2010.

Great review.. it helped me to avoid this car as occasion. ;)
Thanks I have been looking into it now I won’t buy it until I have a close mechanic friend
Fantastic video 👍💪
A beautiful machine. What is Land Rovers problem? Why so many quality issues?
I'm considering buying a Disco 3 or 4. Anybody know a good maintenance manual (apart from Haynes) should one wish to attempt some DIY and preventative maintenance?
I appreciate your graphics. it's very entertaining
Really great video as allways, especially the graphics and animations
I´m between a 2014 LR4 or a 4Runner., so this is a very very helpful video. Gracias...!
I'm down to those two as well. Did you end up getting one of them, if so hows it going with it?
Called disco's for a reason,,,so many flashing lights lol
😂😂😂😂
What a Great Video- Thank you!
Love the video... funny, entertaining and informative
Which is more reliable between the Discovery and Range Rover sport?
Loved your review
I Love your videos keep it up,,, When is part 3 coming out on the L322?
Can you please do a review on Nissan murano as well thanks in advance
would you recommend going for a 2013 (last year of the V8) or a 2016, if both had same mileage and maintenance history? I have heard that the 2013 is less of a hassle to repair than the V6's
Ok, have not found any comparisons between GX 470 and the LR3. I'm looking at an 06 GX470 w/ 175k miles and a 05 LR3 with 105K miles. The LR3, original owner, WELL maintained, $10K. GX470, 3 owners, great maintenance records, $18k. Thoughts?
Great job. Please kindly review like this on Landcruser LC80, LC100, LC 200 as well.
I only watched 8mins and decided anyone would be off their rocker! Buying 1....
Bad ass freakin review
I thought about one until I found out that the whole body of the car has to come off the chassis if you want to replace a turbo... Clever design.. NOT!
Good video.its good car.but your are wrong about disco 4.it's have more cranck problems than disco 3 and no matter what year.but people who whatsing this video need to gnow that disco is not bad car.it need bit more care and then its best car ever.(my 2007 disco 3 is better to drive on highway than 2017 landcruiser what i and have drived same or better on offroad) so good things not meaned to be less expensive.sorry english is not my main language.
My 06 range rover hse 4.4l is running Rich both banks, any known issue for these codes?
So mamy memes were consulted in the making of this video.
Muitos mecânicos comenta que os motores 2.7L diesel só presta dos anos 2005/6 ,que são mais confiáveis do 2007 a diante começa a aparecer os problemas citado no vídeo é só vai piorando quando passa para o 3.0L
great video with tons of info.
Superb! Thank you.
Fantastic review and humour
Brilliant video - many thanks. I have owned a Discovery 4 (UK ) so 3 litre diesel sequential twin turbo V6 - my local Garage have warned of Turbo pipe issues - has anyone had or aware of this problem? My Garage are recommending a routine change to latest variant which I am Ok with so long as the cost is valid - i.e. it really is an issue and worth doing - any feedback would be great,
I think that is the least of your worries with the TDV6, just pray your crank doesn't snap
@@paulhancock3844 which model(s) have that crankshaft issue?
This video is so true ...I was also laughing "like an animal" LOL...
That was the best part! 😁
It is very helpful explanation. I am planning to buy 2008 or 2009 LR3 HSE.
Love your vids and ur accent😀👍👍
When you see the length of the video, it will say enough of the reliability :(
In all honesty, I think the issues are not really mind-blowing especially considering he's talking about Disco 3 and 4, seven (7) engines, and 3 transmissions.
You sound like Nikolay Tanev 🤔😁 btw as always excellent video 😊🤙
Hi, thanks for the video
I tried one LR4 few days ago and it was having some vibrations when you accelerate then it disappears could it be this torque converter ?
because other than that the car is just running fine and smooth, gears are shifting smoothly
thank you !
yes it can be the torque converter, but I would also check the driveshafts and propshafts for excessive play which can cause this vibrations too
Land rover, taking you places, leaving you there
This was good! Thank you!
Very informative, I only wish it had come out before I bought mine!
seb berg what model you bought? Did you get a lot of problems? I am considering to get 2014 model
@@duonglam8055 please update us on your experience with the car. I'm looking to buy 2016 LR4
@@sebberg3362 but the LR3 is a good one. Did you buy the diesel or petrol?
Great review,.thanks.
Any one with the 4.0 v6? How is it holding up
Hi DCR, it would be helpful if we can get your opinion for your Top X suvs/euro/ sedan/v8 etc. reliable cars
so is the 2012 3.0L diesel the worst in terms of reliability? i’m interested in one with 182k km with full history in Land rover, i’d like to avoid big problems
Did you get an answer?
@@pmacc3557 no unfortunately, that's why i didn't buy one
@@ExploreFishing ok im still pondering. When you think about it, it's not a good thing when people are worrying about such issues that might occur .
Could you please tell me where this Dealer located? I would like to go there to choose one.cause I'm looking for a Landrover Discovery.Salisbery Maryland.U S A.
really helpful when buying used cars!
Super video, thank you.
Don’t buy the freelander
I hope you haven't bought the Freelander. Don't buy it
I had a freelander 2, had it as a daily driver for 3 years, no problems at all. Before that I had a Golf, that was always going wrong.
Very good video.
golf mk7 review please!!
i came for honest LR3/4 Facts, I stayed for the humor 😂
There used to be a saying, “If you wish to go into the Outback drive a LR - but if you wish to get back out, drive a Land Cruiser.........unfortunately nowadays the LR won’t even get you into the Outback in the first place!
thanks, one more time to kill my willingness to buy a preowned land rover lol.
Thoughts?

1:27 literally all that has happened to my lr3 😂
Correction: the RR Sport was based on LR3 and 4 not the other way round!
can you please cover audi a3 ? from 2016?
There a lot of little things you have to fix ...but he didn’t say anything bad about the engine 🤔
And you will need all those cup holders and storage space to keep food resources to keep you going while you waiting for the recovery truck again lol
Brilliant
After watching this video im pretty sure i better going to buy a Touareg 2 :D
The Discovery 4 interior is way better. For build quality, looks and material quality. I think the Discovery 3 interior has aged badly while the Discovery 4 interior has aged beutifully
This car should be sold with reliability warning labels
