    I believe some diesels do this as well. The thought is that if the chains are at the back near the transmission, the crank is put under less stress as it doesn’t have to drive as many things at the front of the engine and therefor the crank has a bit less stress on it. It makes sense to do this on high power engines but it sucks when it breaks. Correct me if I’m wrong I’m no expert

      this was actually done to shorten the block so it fit in more platforms without having to extend the front of the car.

      Problem is the shitty plastic guides, so yes that's pretty much what happened lol. Rs4 didn't have this problem because they didn't spare the expense

      ​​@@Aesthetics622 Jokes on you.....That ford 4.0l v6 is MUCH more reliable than this audi engine, they don't break guides NEARLY as often as these audi do! In fact, many of them last a LONG time before a timing service is required (as long as you change the oil on time).
      And I say that as an Audi fan (had a 1996 a6 quattro and miss it dearly). They should have stuck with timing BELTS and kept them up front!

    It's a smart design and doesn't need as much service as other timing chain or belt designs. It gives the most space for the quattro system and transmission to line up with the front axles and keep the engine as far back as possible.

    Just the parts for reliable fix will run in the $1000s. Timing Chains setup definitely one of finest Rube Goldberg engineering examples.

      I have a B7 S4 and I WISH I could LS swap it but sadly it won’t fit 😢 the whole reason the timing chains are in the rear is to make the engine shorter, and oh my is this V8 short(almost half a foot shorter than a standard LS).

    My 2014 BMW N57 inline 6 diesel has the timing chains oriented in the rear as well. So it's not just VAG doing it. I bet Mercedes is probably as well.

    A work colleague and her husband were Audi fans, because of the supposed prestige. Hers pooped its pants at 80,000km. The dealer convinced her not to even bother fixing it, aaannnd, you guessed it, she bought another one. Another colleague had a TT. Even a basic service cost her NZD1000. What silly people will pay to be perceived as cleaver and rich.

    I get so much $HIT about owning a Honda. Granted it’s FWD, granted transmissions can be questionable. But my gawd, not owning an Audi, Benz or BMW may be a blessing!!!

      Hondas are the best! Their cars and motorcycles (and small engines and garden equipment) are usually well-designed, even if there are some things that can be a pain to do, it's always been thought through and is possible.
      Allen Millyard loves his Honda ST1300 Pan European bikes, the way the gearbox cartridge comes out of the V4 engine case as one unit is super elegant!
      The Honda K series is considered the best 4 cylinder car engine ever too (of course it's a shame Honda didn't put two K20s or two F20C or F22C engines together to make a 4.0-4.4 V8, similar in concept to this Audi engine -- a facelift of the original NSX with a transverse V8 like the 308-328 Ferrari would have been really cool).

      @@TassieLorenzo not without the risk, your always going to have risk buying a used audi in general and i didn’t say the cheapest mechanic work motor it’s just been rated as one of the most reliable according to google. I personally got the A8 quattro with the 4.2 v8 and it’s a fun car i’ve had my issues but not a timing belt issue (knock on wood). the worst issue i’ve had so far is my coolant sensor which won’t stay in place. that’s all been a great car.

    Very uncommon for timing chain problems in this specific engine, the B8’s 4.2L V8 were essentially bulletproof with low tuning capabilities. Although they do has various common points of oil leaks that come with regular maintenance, it’s nothing serious than a few gaskets + o-rings. Surprised seeing this engine with a timing problem. Any VAG forum will show/tell ya these engines are resilient.

      The V6 has a more complicated timing arrangement because there aren't covers on the heads. You gotta thread the chain through the bottom.

      @@speedkar99 i learned on the floor, definitely don't need a lift for this. would just take the core support off complete, unhook the wiring ect and drop the whole assembly with cradle and pull it forward. ezpz.

    Audi labor rates are high to do any timing job. The a6 has no room in front the a8 requires removal that's why the old one are rarely seen on the road

    I had an a6 and you had to pull the entire nose off just to do a water pump. 🤦‍♂️. Loved driving that car but it was an absolute money pit.

      Why did GM give up on the Northstar that had advantages like the bedplate design, the 4xVVT and the 4-valve heads that flow more than the LS' 2-valves?

    Looks worse than it really is. I've owned all kinds of Audi/VW vehicles over the years. The bark is worse than the bite. Keeps resale low and I'm cool with that. 😂

    Looks 10x worse than it actually is to do the job.. the setting timing is the easiest part of the whole thing. 😉
