    These tapes are just treasure. I think that Robert Goulet and Julie Andrews singing "Somewhere" together is the best thing I ever heard. Their voices blend so perfectly together. One can only imagine how they must have sounded live.

    It is really amazing to think this would have been broadcast in prime time! It may be something that you have to be a singer to appreciate, but Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet sing together here so well that it is just hard to believe! There is real depth of skill and musicianship and knowledge of so much popular and theater music of the day, and I have only gotten through the first 17 minutes! This is unlike anything you would see today, and it lay dorment for so many years in some stack of tapes somewhere! This is really a great thing to get to see again! Thank you for posting!!

      Contemporary audiences wouldn't have the attention span for this. But this was somewhat typical of the occasional network prime time "spectaculars" of the time.

    • @chrisnorton4382
      @chrisnorton4382 6 лет назад +3

      StudioZ7 - But this wasn't an occasional spectacular. This was episode 5 in a 24 week run. To produce a show of such high quality with only limited rehearsal time was exceptional and it received the Emmy wins to prove it. Unfortunately however success was all about ratings not the show's intrinsic class, so the show was dropped. I believe by the time it finished all the participants were feeling the strain of producing weekly shows. I read an article by Ian Fraser (Julie's long term musical director) who first worked with her on the show, where he cast doubts on whether the show could have continued much longer anyway due to exhaustion. You can have quality or quantity. Getting both, as here, is a rare accomplishment.

      11vlyleven we pander now to the lowest common denominator in an audience (and everywhere else). In fact if you offer audiences something better, they can learn to appreciate. But no one respects that principle anymore. I.e. that you have to put something in to get the most out of.

    Julie Andrews is really the greatest musical star...What a glorious voice. This JAH episode is a treasure filled with wonderful, classicl songs and musical numbers in Broadway history. Her partnership with Robert Goulet is magnificent. They do wonders to R&H, Berlin, Gershwin. Porgy and Bess is a gem. Bravo, Andrews & Goulet!

    When Julie sings full voice in full gear, her top notes cuts through the orchestra and drowns out other singers, including Goulet, you can barely hear him in the last Gershwin song. Those high As and B-flat are just grand.

    Finally someone put this whole episode on youtube! There are 3 minutes missing from the others. Its right after the song Stepping Out With My Baby. Julie and Robert start off singing a certain song, then end up singing There's No Business Like Show Business. That part is cut off on the others. Plus this has the original commercials! Great! Thanks! Joe

    831 shows is a ton of work for these Broadway stars they did in the 60s. TV is nice but a real theater experience is so much fun to enjoy. Live free or Die 🇺🇸.

    Variety shows were going nearly extinct in 1970s. There were a couple of dozen shows that lasted 1 to 3 years. After decades of long running series like Sullivan, Como, Williams, Kaye etc, only Carol Burnett had a successful weekly show at this point. Why did this happen? I don't know.

    • @garypaquin9571
      @garypaquin9571 Год назад

      Perhaps it’s because the host needed to perform in a variety of roles; singer, comic, interviewer, perhaps also a musician or dancer. Each guest brought their own skill set that had to be featured. Only Ed Sullivan got away with doing nothing…he started out as a journalist covering the Broadway beat.

    Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet both starred on Broadway in Camelot. She was Guinievere and he played Sir Lancelot. And Richard Burton played none other than King Arthur. I wished I could have seen it! So when the movie came out......all different cast. Same as My Fair Lady, Julie played Eliza on stage but not the movie! Too bad.

    Julie singing Put on a Happy Face, Dick Van Dyke's iconic song, is just so perfect and appropriate...always loved her and DVD together.
    And as for Julie and Robert, they're adorable together.

    Goulet loved Julie Andrews but she didnt because she loved Blake Edwards.He married first Carol Lawrence and later she married Vera who was his wife until the end of his life in 2007.

    I think Julie Andrews was like that with all her men she sang with. Her and Robert Goulet were getting pretty close. Her and Steve Lawrence were the same. I feel sorry for Eydie Gorme having to watch that.
