I appreciate how you acknowledge what’s good with your gear before going in on what needs to be improved. That’s the sign of a mature industry professional. I’m just now getting reintroduced to the Yamaha sound. I got ahold of a dead MO6 and rebuilt it (I’ll have to publish a video of what I did). But, it’s my first Yamaha synth since my first piece which was a QY10. Keep these coming!!!
Thank you for this clear explanation . I still have my Motif XS6 sitting in the back corner, just limit space. I replaced it with the Fantom 6, which I love the ease of use.....But I agree Yamaha just has the sound...and I always found them to be frustrating also.. thanks again good to know I am not the only one. Peace .
1st: put in multitimbral mode> push category>select "Int" then select MULTI/GM (this is you true, 16 channel initialized mode) 2nd: if you want, globally turn off keyboard control by pushing UTILITY button> select effect switch> select keyboard ctrl lock. when you select a sounds for each track, make sure you're changing the sound at the track level and not at the performance level. Also when you select sounds on each track use single sounds. go to attributes and select single. you can not use multiple combination sounds in multitimbral mode.
Yamaha synths and sound modules has always been difficult to operate as multi-timbral. When I first purchased the Yamaha Motif sound module I had to call customer service support for help to get it in multiple-timbral mode. I was on hold for 15 minutes as he thumbed through the manual as I had done. We both figured it out together.
I agree bro. I have the other previous Montage, they do make things difficult to navigate, work properly with the midi. I’ve been having this issue lately when I play on the keys, then I might hear this loud ringing sound smh. Idk
What up Bolo. I got a response from a former Yamaha Product Specialist regarding this video and he gave me this very detailed explanation. Hope it clears up some things, lmk what you think fam. "Many of you know who I am (I worked for Yamaha for 34 1/2 years as a Product Specialist, mainly for pro synthesizers - “Bad Mister” was my online avatar - now happily retired) I watched this video and can quickly see where, why and what the author is missing - even though they don’t really give their specific issue with formatting these new synths for the MPC’s hardware sequencer. (I am not an expert on the MPC - so keep that in mind; although I have worked with hardware sequencers; and I no longer work for Yamaha). I’m just an end user, now. But I am knowledgeable about the MONTAGE M… as I hope you see below (sorry about the length). It is clear that they have not really understood the differences between the old Motif-series, MO-series, S-series (2001-2015) series and the newer MONTAGE/MODX/MODX+-series (starting in 2016) and the even newer MONTAGE M-series…(2023-present). When you are using an ‘old school’ hardware Sequencer (which are designed to record 16 separate sounds, on 16 separate Tracks, each on a separate MIDI channel, using a one-at-a-time workflow), and you are attempting to record the newer generations of Yamaha synths, you can easily get lost. If this is you, read on. The MONTAGE/MODX/MODX+ and the new MONTAGE M feature both Single and Multi Part programs. Yamaha synths prior to these featured “Voices” and “Performances”. There are 3 main generations we are discussing: those between 2001-2015, those released between 2016-2022, and the new MONTAGE M 2023-now The old Motif-series had “Voices” (single Part) programs, and Performances (up to four Parts). Back then you “knew” to select individual “Voices“ to build your Song Mixing or Pattern Mixing setup for sequencing. You placed “Voices” into “Parts”. If you limit yourself to Single Part programs in the MONTAGE M, you can work as you always used to… but as soon as you want to work with ‘what’s new’ about these new generation Yamaha synths (those after 2016) it will require you learn what things are now different and most importantly, what to avoid when attempting to work with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer. If this is of interest to you read on… if not, sorry, it’s a long explanation. I’d shoot a video, but I’m retired now Not understanding ‘how’ the Multi Part programs fit into the old world of the 16 sounds/16 Tracks/16 Channels (one-at-a-time record) method presents the issue that obviously is perplexing the author of this video. And is likely confusing plenty of users, according to him, attempting to record to an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer… let’s see if I can shed some light on the subject… fill in your own expertise on the hardware sequencer that you use. The MPC hardware sequencer (based on the original Linn9000 circa 1980s) cannot easily handle a synth that can transmit on multiple (as many as eight MIDI Channels simultaneously - especially if you don’t or you refuse to understand what KBD CTRL (Keyboard Control) is all about. “Keyboard Control” is a function that was born to manage Multi Part programs… *not* for recording to ‘old school’ hardware sequencers. You will not even have to mess with it once you know what to do. The ‘fix’ that is being requested has already been implemented in the newest MONTAGE M-series (2023-present). But let’s take it slow… Imagine trying to record the MULTI Part Performance “CFX Concert” from your MONTAGE Classic, or the MODX/MODX+ (which used 4 Channels) to a sequencer that records one channel at a time)… not a good fit, in fact, it doesn’t fit, at all. The new MONTAGE M has expanded the number of AWM2 Elements to 128 which allows all Elements of an instrument program like the “CFX Concert” to exist in a single Part, on a single Channel - perfect to output to a single-Track-at-a-time ‘old school’ hardware sequencer. By Expanding the Element count, instrument sounds like the “CFX Concert” can now easily be recorded to hardware sequencers. This is a key to the entire explanation that follows. HISTORY: The original Motif (2001) had 561 Preset single Part Presets and room for 144 User single Part programs (these were called “Voices”). When you worked with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer you knew to limit yourself to those 705 VOICES. (You knew to avoid trying to record the 128 4-Part programs of the Motif “Performance” Mode when sequencing to a hardware sequencer). The Motif ES (2003) had 961 single Part Presets and room for 288 User single Part programs (called “Voices”). When you worked with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer you knew to limit yourself to those 1249 VOICES. (You knew to avoid trying to record the 128 4-Part programs of the “Performance” Mode when sequencing to a hardware sequencer). The Motif XS (2007) had 1,217 single Part Presets and room for 416 User single Part programs (called “Voices”). When you worked with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer you knew to limit yourself to those 1633 VOICES. (You knew to avoid trying to record the 384 4-Part programs of the “Performance” Mode when sequencing to a hardware sequencer). The Motif XF (2010) had 1,217 single Part Presets and room for 544 User single Part programs (called “Voices”). When you worked with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer you knew to limit yourself to those 1761 VOICES. (You knew to avoid trying to record the 512 4-Part programs of the “Performance” Mode when sequencing to a hardware sequencer). The current MONTAGE M (2023) has some 1,800 Single Part Presets and room for a mind-numbing 10,880 User Single Part programs (now called “Single Part” programs). Now when you work with an ‘old school’ hardware sequencer you must limit yourself to those 12,680 potential Single Part programs. (Make sense?) Sounds crazy but out-of-the-box you have 1,800 Preset Single Part PRESETS out of the 3,472 total programs in the MONTAGE M - that means there are 1672 Preset Multi Part Presets that you must know to avoid… you knew to avoid them in the older Yamaha synths… now you *know* to avoid them when recording to a one Track-one Part-one Channel at-a-time hardware sequencer! Ok, so how to do this elegantly… read on."
I definitely understand what he was saying, that was not my issue. I know how to use the single parts and create a beat which I have on the Modx and the Montage. My issue was the routing of the single tones. Certain single tones were routed in so many ways to where I couldn’t even use the volume knob in a particular track. Also, there were constant midi messages being sent, even with an initialized set. The issue is not finding sounds and using them to make beats. The issue was all of the other things going on even after you would even initialize the performances. I’m not the only one who has noticed these things because a lot of the people who own the “new Yamahas”are having the same issue. I’ve already sent it back and just continued to use my Roland boards. They are much easier to use and they do exactly what you tell them to do. I hope Yamaha can get it together to where you can use these boards with external gear; because, right now it is very hard and confusing. It should not take this much discussion, dialogue, and uses to try to figure out how to use these boards with external midi. However, I thank you for reaching out and sending this over and I thank him for giving insight on these new boards 👍🏾
@BoloDaProducer Ok gotcha. Yeah I definitely feel what you're saying bro. I'll try to get a little bit more clarification but at least we got the conversation going and hopefully Yamaha can tweak things moving forward to make it a little more MPC/External midi friendly 💯
I have been a day one Yamaha keyboard fan since back in the day. I have the MODX I love the sounds but having to create a sequence and a pattern and link together and import into you DAW and do a backflip it just to much. It has left me uninspired to create because of the hassle. I'm about to pull my MOX out of the closet....that wasn't the best workflow either but I created way more with that keyboard so I feel you.
Dang Bolo. I understand the frustration. I got the Yamaha MODX. And sometimes I have to deal with a few issues as I’m trying to import the sounds into my iPad. But those sounds are amazing. I’ll probably get another keyboard from Roland or Korg to see how their processes are with their MIDI controls and dealing with audio.
I’m wondering if the Usb host function on the MPCX or Yamaha may be causing an issue. Using the 5 pin midi may simplify the signals in one direction from both units. Host functions, may cause some confusion of who’s the leader and who’s the follower. Send and listen functions may need to be set in preferences from a computer with usb, on both the montage and MPC themselves, or in the hardware menu. USB editors connected by usb to both units separately, While the units are only connected to each other by 5 pin, (Connection to a computer by usb should only be necessary for set up, or in the studio, not for live performance’s.) computer may help navigating, and help with setting up the preferences and initialized base screenshots for each, and then you can save. To be recalled on each when starting a new track or song. Not sure if this is helpful, I’m just guessing here (terms or language used on each, may be different in practice)and hope you figure it out. Yamaha needs to have a base level simplicity with midi learn, and then the option to go advanced. Midi 2.0 would’ve helped with some of this. Good luck, and many thanks
I sold my Montage 72.I miss itas I had a blast with it. I purchased the Yamaha headphones, the best headphones I have ever used and the comfort was excellent. The software needs to be faster and the display needs update and the memory. They need a sequecer buitin to it also. Sort out theses things and it will be way out in front.
Yamaha is a great company but has their own way with things it seems. Remember a keyboard from decades ago (psr2000) where no matter how I set it up, it would always double midi-notes played on the keybed via the midi out. I had to manually filter channel 2 via my daw to fix this, was such a weird issue. Felt there was some weird internal midi in relation to the hardware button/function (layer of the board) causing it but was baffled that a cheaper Casio immediately was plug and play without doubling midi notes.
I currently own a Yamaha Modx7+. The same thing could be said about the sequencer. I like the sounds on it, but the sequencer lacks simple editing, which make work tedious. I'm strongly considering replacing this with a Roland Fantom 07.
Good Morning My Brother Bolo 🤲🏽 What Stand is that my friend? I have a 3 tier stand, but I like that setup where I can put my X in the middle like yours👍🏽 Appreciate U Beloved 💪🏽✌🏽👊🏾💯
Bolo I have been following you for a while now… I agree in terms of sound especially piano Yamaha sounds really incredible out of the box. I’m out there for a new board but also would want it to work with my MPC. Which board would you recommend in conjunction with the MPC? Korg Nautilus, Montage M8X or Roland Fantom?
I feel what you’re saying, but I for one do not believe that Yamaha intended or intends to make these newer boards accessible to other devices to be controlled. I’ve watched many videos to learn their sequencer when it was introduced in the first Montage; (check out Blake Angelos from Yamaha, dude knows his stuff!), and they seemed to make it clear that this was meant to be a end all be all keyboard! That being said, I still feel you…being that you’ve spent at least 3700.00 on a keyboard; you want it to do what other boards of the past did with ease! I’m not sure that Yamaha is going to go back to that.
@ I remember when the original Montage came out and it didn’t have a sequencer, I kept my Motif XF…until they listened to their customers and added one! Now it’s NOT as intuitive as the one on the Motif’s but they DID improve it over time. My point; hopefully with your platform and followers, they’ll listen and make changes to the OS to address this issue.
To Yamaha; If you have or want to get MontageM. Montage should be able clear (Song/Sequencers) have to build from scratch (idea). I thought Yamaha keyboards want customers to look, touch, hear, options not other brands. 🤔 Yes will use a bunch for the finish product.
I have the Modx8. I use it for the sounds and excellent feel of the weighted keys. I just record everything everything straight in to the mpc via audio track. I've had my run trying to use midi and got more gray hair!!! 😂 👴🏾
I bought a MODX about 4 years ago, then an MPC One. Totally new to both of them. Tried to set them up to run midi. Absolute nightmare. Could rarely get it to work. Sometimes it would seem to work and then just stop. Horrible integration.
And there's also a issue which nobody talks about as well, like when u split the keyboard and u change a sound (whether it be the left or right side), it clears the split point that was set and instantly layer the sounds, and ive been trying to get answers on how to fix this.....but no response whatsoever.
These MF’s are super frustrating. I just knew I was doing something wrong for the first few weeks of owning it. Nope, the midi implementation (channel locked to track), is so strange.
@@BoloDaProducer any intererst in adding a moog to the setup as a permanent piece? And I see you have the roland but would the korg nautilius be a redundant workstation?
Yooo Bolo, you can use tracks 9-16. Tracks 1-8 have something called keyboard control and it’s weird. But that’s how I’ve been getting by without the sound changing when using midi. Tracks 9-16 doesn’t have that blue keyboard on it which is something they call keyboard control. I still hate that it’s extra steps just to do something simple.
I Own a Ensoniq KS 32 Keys Feel Great built like a tank . it was build round 83 and still works like the day i got it No powder Wart. I use it as a controller board connected to Reason abd FLs i can make any sound out there Midi Works great yes it has Midi on out and Thru The Piano sounds great 3 Zone of pressure.I have a Yamaha DX 100 battery is hard as hell to repace. Its just to many Models of Yamaha, make on that works well with Midi that is the why its going solf synths.
So, it seems there is a problem with the local mode? From what I know they have abandoned regular multi-timblre modes like most workstations. Also It looks like Yamaha gets pissed off, if you ask you basic workstation functionality
Bolo what about Montage Connect???? Have you tried to get a song or sequence you made on the board into a DAW latley? I asked and there like "were not fixing that"... "get a usb stick, save tracks as midi..bla bla bla" #$#@%
Ive been rocking with my OG Motif 6 and ES rack with my MPCs for this reason. Each time I considered selling one them something reminds me of how dope they still are
It is legit so stupid and pretty frustrating that you even have to deal with it and do any work arounds. On the flip side as you said, I can turn on any Roland or Korg piece and start sequencing with my MPC right away
My only issue with Yamaha was the user screen interface on the Motif Rack. That’s why I sold it years ago, and kept my Fantom-S. But Yamaha had great sounds. Unfortunately I never pulled the trigger on another one since. I would, but just have not.
Using cheap Yamaha like 500$ keyboard sounds better more soul some sounds of expensive keyboards sounds to real and when the record on mics it losses it's soul where it has power
I appreciate how you acknowledge what’s good with your gear before going in on what needs to be improved. That’s the sign of a mature industry professional. I remember when the original Montage came out and it didn’t have a sequencer, I kept my Motif XF…until they listened to their customers and added one!
Now it’s NOT as intuitive as the one on the Motif’s but they DID improve it over time.
My point; hopefully with your platform and followers, they’ll listen and make changes to the OS to address this issue.
Yo i'm having kinda the problem with MODX 6 it aggravating !!!
I feel ya pain!
When using usb midi. Do you have an issue with a stutter using msb lsb when play starting from the MPC? It does it in the motif xs rack too.
I’ve already made videos on that topic and Akai has that as an issue to be fixed soon as new updates will be coming out soon 👍🏾
@@BoloDaProducer I’m not using the beta version. I’m on 2.15.
@@roxmooth I personally didn’t have an issue with 2.15 but they are fixing that issue in the newest update soon
To Yamaha;
If you have or want to get MontageM. Montage should be able clear (Song/Sequencers) have to build from scratch (idea). I thought Yamaha keyboards want customers to look, touch, hear, options not other brands. 🤔 Yes will use a bunch for the finish product.
Hey B, Would The Yamaha Motif Have The Same Issue??
I’m thinking about buying a keyboard today which one would you pick out the Korg Krome EX, Korg Kross 2, or Juno DS?
Juno DS
I have no gear yet im watching all these videos lol
love your content uncle Bolo , u da man 🔥🔥🔥
I appreciate that!
this is why i have not got one yet maybe this video will light a fire
I hope so!
Bolo, why is this video horizontally flipped?
I messed up….
Yamaha is the truth when it comes to superior performance and sound capabilities and quality!!!!
These MF’s are super frustrating.
I just knew I was doing something wrong for the first few weeks of owning it.
Nope, the midi implementation (channel locked to track), is so strange.
What would be your back up board to replace that yamaha?
Any older motif
@@BoloDaProducer any intererst in adding a moog to the setup as a permanent piece? And I see you have the roland but would the korg nautilius be a redundant workstation?
Damn , I was buying this board today 😐
Be Careful… it’s still ready dope though
Yooo Bolo, you can use tracks 9-16. Tracks 1-8 have something called keyboard control and it’s weird. But that’s how I’ve been getting by without the sound changing when using midi. Tracks 9-16 doesn’t have that blue keyboard on it which is something they call keyboard control. I still hate that it’s extra steps just to do something simple.
Ok thanks I’ll definitely try that!
@@BoloDaProducer Did this work? We all want to know how to get this properly done…
I Own a Ensoniq KS 32 Keys Feel Great built like a tank . it was build round 83 and still works like the day i got it No powder Wart. I use it as a controller board connected to
Reason abd FLs i can make any sound out there Midi Works great yes it has Midi on out and Thru The Piano sounds great 3 Zone of pressure.I have a Yamaha DX 100 battery is hard as hell to repace.
Korg is my fav,
Korgs are 🔥
Bolo what about Montage Connect???? Have you tried to get a song or sequence you made on the board into a DAW latley? I asked and there like "were not fixing that"... "get a usb stick, save tracks as midi..bla bla bla" #$#@%
I’m sending it back…
Ive been rocking with my OG Motif 6 and ES rack with my MPCs for this reason. Each time I considered selling one them something reminds me of how dope they still are
It is legit so stupid and pretty frustrating that you even have to deal with it and do any work arounds. On the flip side as you said, I can turn on any Roland or Korg piece and start sequencing with my MPC right away
Have you contacted them directly?
I tried… no success
I wonder if you have to upgrade with a computer?
No
Yo Bolo why don’t Roland and Yamaha don’t make rack mounts anymore of their workstations
Not sure why
Kill your direct monitor and record audio in the mpc. That's what I do and it works when not using midi.
I'm using a Modx8
Bro what MPC is that?????
Looks like a Professional X
Those accidental combi pack selections be the worst
Yes! It is!
Keep it for the sounds bro 😢
❤❤❤ I have M7 G7 Fantom Akai 61 37 Kronos 2
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I just realized this video is reversed. I thought Yamaha and Akai had new products out. The MPC Q knobs being on the right would actually be fire 😂
Yeah I messed up video
My only issue with Yamaha was the user screen interface on the Motif Rack. That’s why I sold it years ago, and kept my Fantom-S. But Yamaha had great sounds. Unfortunately I never pulled the trigger on another one since. I would, but just have not.
Thanks for sharing
You gonna see them at NAMM, let’s all go talk to them
Please!!! 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
You have to take the time to build your own templates
I did… still don’t work..
that last beat review was serious, i say let them pay, really you should be charging a C Note for each review, i say make em pay
🔥👍🏾
video starts at 4:36
Pound for Pound Ensoniq Board sound better . better build quality.
One word: ROLAND
Yamaha keyboard are junk plastic Housing Snall buttons and models change way to offen with a lot of stuff you don't need.
Bro stay with Roland real talk. Let's talk more about that fat Roland please 🙏
Yeah… ima send it back…
🫱🏽🫲🏾
Using cheap Yamaha like 500$ keyboard sounds better more soul some sounds of expensive keyboards sounds to real and when the record on mics it losses it's soul where it has power
Get rid of it all
Not everything, just the Montage..
@ yes, my bad bro. That’s what meant 😂 just the Montage.
