- A core concept in basketball officiating is to be:
• in the right place
• at the right time
• looking at the right things.
When we accomplish that the job gets a whole lot easier.
#5playfriday #abetterofficial
Today we look at who is officiating what on drives to the basket and plays in the lane. Our plays today are from 2-person games, but the concepts also apply to 3-person mechanics on drives from Trail to from Center.
Welcome to another edition of 5 play Friday where we look at plays, & see what we can take from them so that we can get better as basketball officials. Our focus is on rules, signals, mechanics, positioning, demeanor, communication and any other aspects of officiating that we can think of!
5 play Fridays is a weekly series with new videos releasing every Friday during the basketball season.

Transcript below:
on play #1 the lead is official is responsible for the secondary defender
he's officiating this play for a possible block charge for absence of
verdict verticality for elbow contact here the trail official is responsible
for the primary defender on the play the primary defender is red one and
needs to stay with the play and get this push by red one on our airborne shooter
we're dividing the responsibilities of a who's officiating what lead is
responsible for secondary defender on a drive to the lane the trail needs to
stay connected on the primary defender and also ready to make any calls on
obvious fouls in their secondary
so the primary focus of this play is staying connected as trail but having
discipline as a crew recognizing who is officiating what play down the lane
secondary defender belongs to the lead lead has first crack in their primary
coverage area trail official has this player primary defender we could from
the trail I have a reach-in by this player here but this blocked charge play
belongs to the lead
alright screening action player in the trails primary Pass and crash play
offensive foul by lead
player establishes legal guarding position prior to the player going
airborne we noticed the shoulder turn is that a factor on this play
not by rule oftentimes a cue that our brain receives and our brain says oh
wait a minute he did something he's there for you illegal players allowed to
turn to avoid contact offensive foul
you
right this is a crew discipline play super easy charge call but this play
completely belongs to the lead fast-break all defenders our secondary
lead has first crack in case of a double whistle we want our mechanics to be
clean fist up confirm then signal especially as the outside official we
don't want to give a preliminary signal when the play is not enough primary
you
connected as trail primary defender is beaten
we need to stay with this play so this defender belongs to the lead the
secondary defender but the trail needs to stay connected and have the backside
defender.
that's a foul that's a shooting foul
even on a fun play like this there's something for us to focus on
the gyms excited everybody's excited is the team that just got scored upon
excited end of a period and during timeouts we need to observe the players
crossing Спорт
Applicable to 3-person as well on drives from Trail to Lead or from Center to Lead.
i have a question im hoping you can answer by reply or make a video ... who can cancel a game?
the lead ref.. the stadium supervisor, ref supervisor? and for what reasons..example needed.
this is in respect to cancellation not a walk over.
scenrios being leaking roof onto court, too hot, all in brawl including staff and spectators
Your videos are a huge asset to a rookie official like myself! Thank you! Clearly you put tons of time into this. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
That last Bonus Play was great!
I appreciate your videos. You work in some of the tightest gyms I have ever seen. I've been struggling with tight sidelines lately and getting tied up with players. I am not sure how you keep sorted in these tight spots.
Should be a foul for that basketball decal above the key in play #1. Gee whiz! Great Video.
Would it make more sense for the lead to have that play, the trail off ball officiating?
I disagree with play 4. The drive for goal started in the trails PCA. I have always been taught you have the drive all the way to the basket.
Good question. On the one hand, 4.3.2.D.1 (p.43) of this year's NFHS Officials Manual basically says: on drives to the basket, the official whose area the drive originates from has the player and the ball all the way to the basket. However, 4.3.5.C (talking about fast breaks and transition plays) seems to suggest that the lead would take this play.
Greg: what say you?
Its still a secondary defender on a fast break and secondary defenders go to LEAD because he has the best chance to see if that defender is Legal and not moving forward. If your at Trail position on a fast break its not your job to see secondary defenders.
secondary defender should be the lead responsibility. Trail should follow the play and referee the primary defender.
Cannot hear initial play
Tom, I see what you mean. I really dislike when a video has poor sound quality or volume. Almost makes it unlistenable. I'll see what I can do with RUclips editing after the fact. Future videos going forward the sound quality will be excellent.
You guys signal team control foul everytime, not player control. I wish they would just get rid of that mechanic cuz nobody seems to use it
In Arizona, we definitely use the "player control" mechanic for a PC foul, not the "team control" one used in this vid. If there is a team control foul (e.g. illegal screen), then of course we use the team control mechanic. I wonder if these guys do this because it's the proper college mechanic.
The NFHS tried to emphasize the PC mechanic where you put your hand behind your head but it just does not look that good so they gave up, offensive fouls are the kind that need to be sold with a crisp clean commanding mechanic, a multi tweet whistle with a hand behind the head mechanic just doesn't look as strong as a single blast with a snap punch.
@@the1maver1ck you are correct. That snap punch is as exciting as the COME HERE YOU! On Mortal Kombat.
