Having finished my PhD in the UK back in 2018, despite all the differences between US and UK science PhDs, I resoundingly agree with all of these points.
Yes, please post more grad school stuff! I'm a rising 6th year scrambling to finish cool projects and apply to postdocs (EEEEEEEEEK) so more commiseration would be great lol
I so rarely comment on anything online. I wanted to just reach out to say thank you for being a young woman who is putting her intellect and smarts on display for social purposes. Refreshing.
I'm going into my last year of undergrad and planning about doing a Master's/PhD in Data Science. I would love to see more videos about grad school (how you chose your program/school, why you decided to do a PhD, etc.). Also I've been wondering if you can go straight to PhD without getting a Masters. I've read you can if you're a super genius or whatever, but I don't fully understand the value of having a Masters before PhD. Would love to hear anything around these topics discussed in your vids!
Fellow CS (ML) and healthcare grad student here, so much of this resonates! I purposefully went "advisor shopping" instead of trying to target top schools, but I know not everyone has a clear idea of what they want to do (e.g. "I want to do something ML? What specifically? Dunno") before applying :). Also, co-supervision is so nice for interdisciplinary work.
I am from the East Coast, so it was relatively inexpensive to move (went from Ithaca NY to Boston). My friends coming from the West Coast (or from outside of the US) definitely had a rough time with the stipend delays because of the upfront moving costs.
What's PhD tutoring pay like in America? Over here in Australia most PhD students tutor with the uni on the side for ~$50 an hour. It's not ideal, but most PhD students here don't seem to struggle as much as over there
I don't really know anyone who tutors in my program - our stipend is ~$46,000/year USD (before taxes) which is usually enough for people to make it work without needing a second job.
EPSRC based UK PhD Stipend standard is £13k/yr tax free for 3 years, regardless of location. My supervisor actively discouraged tutoring as well. It was just enough to get by, although I started what became my career in my spare time about 2 years in, and that paid for some extras.
What is the purpose of your PhD? is it for personal satisfaction, self aggrandizement or for fat paycheck? What are you inventing, creating or developing to save mankind with all that knowledge? Most of the smart people creating and saving our world today have no PhDs but those with the PhDs are only talking and making RUclips videos why?............
Interesting video and insight into the PhD world. Currently a first year grad student at UGA taking classes part-time, and grateful for an employer that's paying for it! Does the GRE or your graduate GPA hold more weight in doctoral program admissions? Your insight and perspective is refreshing and appreciated. 😎🙏👍
Usually the ranking I've seen is letters of rec = research experience > personal statement >>>>> GPA > GRE. Basically, admissions committee value the opinions of their peers and proof that you've actually done research before the highest, and GPA and GRE aren't nearly as important as long as you clear whatever the program's threshold is (which depends on the program)
Jordan - "check out my vlog channel" Vlog Channel - ...empty... 😢 Am I missing something? As someone from Boston, it is very expensive... especially, Boston and Cambridge.
Nope! I note in the on screen text that the first vlog will be up the day after this video went live (so later today) since I was taking my quals yesterday.
You can check out more grad school content on my vlog channel here! ruclips.net/channel/UCuQprr9BORdW-vsHPZ796ZA
Your program is really 9 years? 😮
This kinda confirms my suspicion that the people you're working with is more important than the specifics of the work, thanks!
I'm gonna finish my master, gonna screech loudly, run far far away, and never look back to the academic system
Yeah no I have no plans to stay in academia post-PhD lol
As a CS undergrad who's really curious about grad school, I find your videos about grad school really interesting and would love to see more!
I’m about to move to Boston for grad school so this video couldn’t have come at a better time for me!! Thank you!
How did you arrange accommmadation
Going to do my PhD in Maths later this year so this was nice!

Thnk you for these videos Jordan, as an engineer finishing my masters i have so may doubts regarding my next step. keep it up!

This is a great topic for more videos!

To answer that last part - it depends on the program! Mine doesn't require a MS to apply but some do.

Would you recommend doing an Ml and healthcare PhD? Which school you did your PhD?
I always assumed that you were from the east coast. Moving to East coast, west coast, or Colorado becomes so expensive if you're not from there

I really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing!

@@JordanHarrod huh that's interesting, the PhD stipend is way lower here 😿 around 30k aud
Watching this after you pass your qualifying exams, Jordan.
Hey i think you know my friend Steve? He is also in the Phd program. His last name is Erkel.
''I am actually a very reserved person'' tbh that ain't a surprise at all, we can hear that from the vids

You sound like jane lane from daria
PhD shouldn't be this hard. They ruined research by running it like a business
@Jordan you are beautiful inside and outside
