In this lesson I will demonstrate how to play the killer intro to Metallica's incredible "Master of Puppets".
Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
In this Master of Puppets guitar lesson I will break down the extremely fast down picked intro that so many Metallica fans love.
In will require a pretty advanced picking hand technique. If you don't have very much experience with this type of rapid muted down stroke metal thrashing, simply try and get the coordination down first. Then as you slowly speed the riff up, pay close attention to any tension that may arise in your picking hand wrist, forearm and shoulder. Use small relaxed movements.
The left hand doesn't get to sit around very long either. It is required to hop down the fretboard fret-by-fret keeping up with the right hand. Getting them both synchronized can be quite the challenge.
The second half of the intro goes into a riff that is a bit easier to play since it stays put in one area of the fretboard and the right hand picking is slightly easier (I explain why in the video lesson).
This is classic thrash metal at it's absolute best so take your time and learn it right. I will be back here soon to show you guys the rest. :)

your hands burn faster
I'm your source of hand destruction
Fingers pump with pain,
Sucking skin away,
Leading on your hand's eruption!
Chop your fingers on a fret board
Master of puppets im pulling your ligaments, twisting your nerves and smashing your tendons, tensed up by me cant play a thing, just call my name i’ll hear you scream
nice
My favorite parts the one with the down strokes
I like the whole music too😂😂
Same
No it’s not
Lol
Yeah especially the fast down stroke part
How the hell does james play these riffs and sing at the same time
absolute beast, and they would play at %120 speed
Watch the 1986 MoP tour in Japan.
James absolutely kills it.
Practice
Because he’s the master of puppets
Practice
When I type in how to play something on guitar, master of puppets for an obvious example, I am one happy sumbitch when I see Carl Brown has a lesson for the particular song I wanna learn. I used to say Carl Brown is in the top 3 guitar teachers on RUclips. Now I am certain he is THE BEST guitar teacher on RUclips and all around one of the best I've ever seen outside of RUclips. Carl. Brown. Is. The. Man. Period.
Imagine this comment being on like a Marty Music video
@@Taurus1337 whats wrong with marty lol??
I have no idea what I was referring to when I wrote this comment to be honest. Perhaps I was just trying to poke fun at him for no reason(???), if someone could figure out what I actually meant please tell me.. lol Edit: I think I was just pulling a stupid, random joke that just didn't really have a point? Something made to sound like a joke, but just an ordinary comment..
@@Taurus1337 no i get it, when i was starting out 10 years ago, marty was a great help he tought me basics and fundamentals. he goes over stuff very slow so you could follow him easily. But after a few years of progress marty just isnt cutting it anymore. Often times he plays stuff wrong and most of the time he only teaches main riffs not whole songs. With Carl its the real deal - his lessons are not to fast, but hes not going over stuff a billion times...hes just expecting that his viewers already got some skills. Also he goes over whole songs alot of times. sorry for my bad english pardon me
I am satisfied when I look up a song and he has a lesson for it
This song requires 50% skill and 50% stamina.
You sure need stamina, but I think you really need to concentrate too. Skill is less important I think. You can play on a slower tempo
100 % down strokes
@@emck7225 I downpick most of it except the intro lick that alternates between the top two strings, i like the sound/feel of it better that way and my speed is faster
@@antoniobanderas3870 Same with me. I don't really care how people play it but I think it sounds best with downpicking for most of it.
More like 100% skill and 100% stamina
I have school in 20 mins and here I am ....

I am doing this during school man... probably not good but eh
3:40 This riff is so underrated. My favourite part of the whole song
That one vibrato note is godly
He plays it wrong here. You go 7 to 9 on the A string to 9 on the D string then back down and slide from 10 to 9 to 10 again on the A string.
@@Bawitdabadabangdadang thats exactly how he explains it

How James plays complex rhythms like this and sings is beyond me...
I think they use backing tracks.
@@DaveTaste live he plays rhythm and sings...so hard to do
@@jarrettfullerton2580 at least James has a drummer that can keep him in time.
@@DaveTaste Lars? All the people I hear say he's terrible at keeping rhythm. James is one of the best rhythm guitarist ever
@@jarrettfullerton2580 yeah that's what I mean, Lars helps keep all the band in time because it's complexed. I'm not saying James can't keep time, I'm saying that with the whole band look to Lars to keep up with each other.
Every time after practicing this song my hands feel like they’ve made solid gains
yes, it's such a very pedagogic song, full of simple riffs but that requires high precision to make it sound 100% right.
Carl I am a huge Metallica fan, and your videos are so awesome, and I know so much Metallica riffs and songs now because of your videos, thanks so much!
Maaan, those down strokes!
Glorious
Once u train enough your right hand doesn’t feel pain at all
@@dx_5222 yes, i learned right hand, but i have a little problem with soloing when i must use alternate picking.
I feel ya a naturally pick up
For me it s harder to alternate pick
You are really great, Carl, congratulations!... the way you organize and communicate the lessons is second to none, you really facilitate A LOT, even when it is difficult!
Again, congratulations, and lots of well deserved success!!
Carl uou are THE BEST teacher on RUclips! Every song I want to learn I first check if you've done a lesson on it because everyone else is just too hard to understand! Can you PLEASE do a proper lesson on HAVE A CIGAR by Pink Floyd? I know that everyone makes requests but there is not even one lesson on this awesome song on all of RUclips! (As far as I know, and believe me, I've searched, because I've been wanting to learn this song ever since I started playing guitar six years ago) thank you for looking!
I learned this song 3 months into guitar and although it wasn't perfect I was pretty close (albeit with extra high gain to mask mistakes) but I decided to come back now that I'm 1 and a half years into my guitar journey to learn the solos and refresh on it to see how far I've come sadly I don't have a whammy bar for the solo but I'm sure I can make it work. Thank you carl for traching me almost everything i know I hope you have a nice day
I think it’s time I learn this I played the intro way too many times lol
Done. Now the harmony and solo
To anyone who is like me and struggles to play this song up to speed, just take 10 minutes a day to play downstrokes to a metronome using proper technique and your speed will improve. I've struggled for years to keep with songs like these and literally after a week of just playing mid paced downstrokes, my speed has improved a lot!
I've done 10 minutes doing 8th notes at 65 BPM so I can purely practice the proper technique, followed by 8th notes for 3 minutes at 120 BPM to practice playing at speed. I also play along to reduced speed Metallica songs just to keep it fun.
I'm not playing this song at 100% speed in its entirety yet, but I have made significant progress and it is greatly encouraging! It works if you are consistent with it.
Thanks for the advice
Do a lesson on wherever i may roam part2 pls¡!!!!!!!!!
I second this
Chimforce that song sucks
Max Amillion lmao ok
Thank you! Great lesson by a great teacher. And 3 differents cams make a huge difference, especially for these kind of riffs. Clever.
Cheers ! (from a new student in France ;-))
We have to remind ourselves that it's gonna be worth in the end, don't quit boys.
interlude is my fav part
OmnipotentO That is on the way in a couple days! :)
GuitarLessons365Song I just had my first guitar lesson (in person) I told him this was my first and I've been playing a month. I showed him things I learned from your lessons, his jaw dropped :P
Yeah interludes are my favorite as well. That's what makes Metallica so sick cuz the perfectly combine heavy riffs with beautiful, harmonious, and melodic interludes.. \.../\m/
+Један Човек I don't think I ever wanted to play like shit? Plus guitar isn't my main instrument, piano is.
+Steven Apexresidual Cliff learnt harmony and melody to James
I love your guitar lessons I always pick up on them pretty quick but it would be so much easier to understand if you could get the dots on the guitar. I've seen a couple lessons where it basically makes your fingers transparent and you can see the dots and exactly where your fingers go. I pick up easy on the bar chords but I have to rewind a couple times on anything that's a little complicated. You're always my go-to if I need to learn something heavy either way, but it sure would be a lot easier to pick up for me and a lot easier for beginners also
Great lesson helps so much just only part missing is just the small distorted fill after the first solo and after the main solo

Thank you so much I was honestly waiting on this video 🙏
Nice job Carl. Feel like you really hit the hammer on the head with this one in terms of accuracy. Lot of people miss that open E when doing the verse riffs.

This guy is the GOAT.
After 25 years of just playing the intro riff because tab books were confusing and I couldn't figure out the timing, I learned the entire song in 1 hour. Now I can annoy my neighbours more thoroughly. Thank you!
I didn't even told this to my gf yet but i love you man ^^
Such a fantastic lesson!

Awesome
This song kills my picking and hand arm soooo many down picks
Can someone tell me the advantage of using your pinky on A 4th fret at 2:43? Feels easier to do that riff with my ring finger
Anyone know his amp settings, his tone is sick

Turn your chorus and distortion all the way up you should get a similar sound.
Carlos thanks
Carlos chorus? for rhythm distortion?
Do what u want
Great lesson! Thanks Carl!
Since this song has a lot of parts, better if you'll sing along some lyrics so we know which part is it, and also, mention the exact name of power chord like F power chord instead of saying power chord on the 6th string 1st fret. You have a good tutorial by the way
!!!!!!!!!The best lesson I've seen
youre doing an amazing job man
Great lesson thanks
I'm still learning for eddie 🤟
shut up
Carl Brown, you're my hero
If anyone is having trouble with the downstrokes just keep practicing until your forearm feels like its going to fall off. I learned how to do it by learning creeping death actually
Love the lessons man! Thanks to you, I finally learned the correct way to play my favorite song! I've been trying to play this song for almost ten years, and I've made more progress in the last six weeks thank I have since I started playing! Keep 'em coming! Requests: please do lessons for "Anthem (We Are The Fire)" and "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr" by Trivium
I’m just subscribing after using this man’s tutorials for awhile I use them so often I just didn’t even think there was a way I wasn’t subbed
Am I the only one who doesn't mind the down picking. I down pick most things anyways so it really doesn't bother me
You're amazing man thank you very much
Thank you🙏🏾🎸🔥
Great tutorial. Correction after the muted lick on 4:47, it's 8th frret, not 7th according to my Cherry Lane Tab book.
Awesome lesson, thank you, the tab sounds accurate. Now I'm gonna be the Master of Master of Puppets
Which hand do people usually have trouble on? My strumming hand (right-hand) is BURNING. But going to get thru with this just to learn and one day play this song live for school. Love u Carl
Just keep on practicing man and eventually it will become easy!
@@bonbaro7399 i have no idea what's wrong with youtube but it's been almost a month. So why is it showing a week? Anyway thx man it DID get easier and i can play it pretty good now and i just learnt james' solo and his part in the harmony solo. Nailed it after about 20 minutes

this is great! thanks!
You explain this so well, thank you. Practicing for 5 mins and already have it down
Thank you for this. I was having trouble with the part

I just could not adapt a correct fretting hand position. It's very distinct in this video and the recording.
Cheers from Miramichi.
Gosh I practiced this song for months and I've finally mastered the downpicking... I can go up to 230 bpm now and all thanks to you.
No one likes a show off mate.
You should do a lesson on the full song of battery, not just the main riff!
Dylan Bing Yeah I am working my way through all the Metallica famous riff videos and finishing the whole song. Should be doing battery within the coming weeks. :)
GuitarLessons365Song carl could you please tell me where the official audio to the song romance you taught is...I cant find the song to practice over thanks

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I didn't realise how much I'd enjoy learning this until I learned it
Take my respect for you ❤️
nice performance
at 00:10 , what is that sliding thing that you do at the very start?
It's just putting your finger higher on the neck on the low E string and applying pressure when you hit the string and slide it back. You don't need it for this song but maybe for example if you listen to Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix, he does it in the intro riff that occurs throughout the song

Months of training of not knowing what up strokes are is paying off nicely
Ha same here
I never use upstrokes so i really dont mind
How does one get that tone? I have a distortion, tube overdrive and fuzz pedal, humbuckers and a Fender Champ 100. Cheers.
Why do you use your pinky to play the power chords as opposed to your third finger? I have always used my third finger but I'm struggling with sliding the power chords without overstressing my hand. Does using the pinky help or is it just personal preference?
+Jake Denison Using your pinky will help a lot with sliding power chords. Most guitarists develop their third finger first because it's easier but later get into sliding at the top of the neck and get to develop their pinkies. However, you will still need to use your ring for the high power chords. In short, low power chords use pinky, high power chords ( D5 chord in the 8th position) use ring.
It does help a lot, I couldn't play this with my ring, then I switched to the pinky and it became way easier, although I still can't play this at more than 190, but that's cause my right hand's shit
In addition to less stretch using the pinky frees up your middle and ring fingers to play other notes on lower strings. A lot of metal players play with the pinky like this. I know James Hetfield does, and he possibly picked it up from Dave Mustaine when they were in Metallica together. Dave also sometimes plays power chords with middle and pinky or index and ring. He calls it "Spider Chord"ing and it's pretty much the only way to play stuff like Wake up Dead by Megadeth or Metallica's Ride the Lightning which was partially written by Mustaine. I think since then James developed a slightly different way of playing the riff to avoid the middle-pinky power chords but he still needs that middle finger free to play it and that's way easier if your middle finger isn't strained already since the middle and ring fingers are bound to the same tendon at the wrist. I know Matt Heafy also plays like this but I don't know enough about Trivium to call out any songs that do anything similar to the spider chord technique.
Also this is somewhat anecdotal but I've noticed that myself and several friends who come from classical violin and pick up guitar will gravitate towards playing power chords like this without video tutorials, just reading tabs.
Anyway, it's been a year, how's your master of puppets coming along?
I used to only be able to play power chords with my pinky switching to my ring was the best thing I ever did. It also help a lot when you need to do a full power chord. I used to have to sort of bar my pinky to get a

Hey Carl idk if you read this or not but when I go to the F sharp on the e string on the second part of the verse I literally cannot downpick at the speed of when I'm picking open E. Why is that?
I need some pre work out for this stuff 😂

Im having trouble palm muting and fast downpicking because my pickup is in the middle of where I would find comfortable to strum so its either extend my fingers past the pickup or under it
Thank you! I've been searching to learn this song, but most play it at like half speed with tabs on the bottom of the screen and don't break it down like you have. I'm not too good with tabs so this was very beneficial for me, Once again thanks alot!
