This is the video our community needs! I would have added the transmission mount insert, diff breathers and snorkel, but maybe that will come in part 2 😉
Great video Jordan, the more that people realise what proven performers the mighty Subaru's are for off-roading and touring, the bigger the all-wheel drive off-road community becomes and that's no bad thing :D
thank you for this video man!! im currently building my 2005 Forester XT (4spd auto) into an overland rig and you got me thinking into aspects i haven't considered yet, as always great video man and take care!
This is good info. I've got an SF Forester GT auto, once I get the transmission sorted I'll be testing it out around home, it comes standard with the AT lock which is awesome, might look at upgrading the front and rear diffs to proper LSD/Lockers at some point in the future, but for now I want to make it drive and comfortable. Bash plate is a must.
@@ALNSMOVERLAND I have, if you remember that was at the top of my list for my son's first car last year (he fell in love with a red Grand Am though), and when I was thinking about adding a 2nd car to our stable (Mrs Small ADV and I only have the FJ and the motorcycle) a Foz was on the top of my list (ultimately, we decided to buy the boy a car instead at the time, I'll start looking again probably next year) 😊
I have R180 limited slip diffs front and rear as well as an upgraded 12kg viscous centre. Very very capable combination for off-road and slippery stuff.
@@ALNSMOVERLAND it's possible, im saying it from my point of view, because for 10k km I drive maybe 100 off road, so I am using it basically on the road hahah
So raise the center of gravity by lifting the vehicle, adding larger tires and putting a bunch of weight on the roof, then remove the anti sway bars? Lots of bad ideas there.
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Definitely not track days, but there's people in the comments talking about doing this to their daily drivers. I can't imagine someone loading their family in that and heading off down the highway. Wouldn't take much to roll it over.

Nice video, really helps a lot. I have a Impreza Wagon 2001 gx ... and I wonder which engine is your Forester and how much horse power ... and how about your consum .. mine is the 2.0 NA of 125 horse power .. and after install the Forester Struts and the BFGoodrich A/T (215/75-15) I feel it has lost half of his power ... even on freeway I have to downshift to 4th gear some times ... and also I lost a lot of starting power in offroad uphills .... and my milleage (consumption) has been affected a lot ... I am near 11-12 litres per 100km ... thank you very much!
Hey mate - wondering if you can comment on on-road comfort of your subi. I currently own a Suzi Jimny and have found it just far too hard to live with day to day, not to mention, very poor crash safety. In addition, its 4x4 capabilities are really beyond my needs for adventure and exploration (rather than rock crawling). I have seen you wheel with Suzuki's sometimes, wondering if you have ridden in one on the roads and could comment on how comfortable your Subi is with its lift and tyres compared to a Jimny? I know stock forester is very comfortable and good highway cruiser, just wondering if your mods made it significantly worse. Awesome ride by the way, really clean build & great off road performance - very inspiring. Cheers from Australia.
Thank you for your comment mate! The Forester is very comfy on and off road! The lift doesn't affect anything but the tires can (mostly noise) I was able to compare it to a land rover discovery and the comfort of the little Subie is way better 😁 and they are also very secure car in case of crash
As you said, this is indeed a FINE line! But offroading is part of Overlanding, the other way is not true 😉 Maybe a winch later, with a more powerful engine 😂
About the rear struts. Can i fit only the sg rear strut and use the rest of my sf struts? Like springs and top bearing? By the way i like your videos. Keep posting them👍👍
Hey, i think all this off road mods are not cheap. You musst have spent a lot of money to get the car you have now. But why? For this money and all the work you kann buy a car that is already fine for offroad like landrover or hilux. So what is the advantage in your opinion to mod the forester?
they're not expensive. total cost is probably $5000 including labor. you still have a good daily driver with decent mileage. land rover has 5 yr depreciation > 60% which is atrocious. hilux (4runner in the US) is good but large. both land rover and 4runner have terrible mileage and drive like shit on pavement. the only true (mechanical) 4wd that competes with the forester in its segment is the jeep wrangler.

I'm sorry but I just have to say from personal experience having an SF Forester that had a Pedders "heavy duty" 1 inch lift kit - get rid of those shocks. They will not last. Mine were leaking oil after just 20,000km and I can see in the video that your boots are already ruined. They are letting dust and dirt in which will soon destroy the seals in the hydraulics of the shocks. KYB make good shocks for the SF Forester and that's what I've got now.
Hey mate, thank you for your feedback! I'm running pedders shocks on both of my forester (my overland build and my abused daily) and so far so good. I'll keep a eye on them after you comment tho. KYB definitely makes great shocks as well 👍
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Yeah mate just keep an eye on them. I should have also mentioned that my use case is what's known as "high speed off-roading". Basically rally driving. The reason is because I live in rural Australia and every road is a 100 zone and rough as hell. Low speed off-roading would be somewhat less taxing on shocks.

Thing that hurts subbies are the approach and departure angle. Other than that they are little tanks
