    right now, i can only see improvements and improvements for cathay and their travelling industry. Cathay's new "Vantage Pass" promotion, their brand new aria suites, PEY and Y for 777-300ERS cabin looks absolutely stunning. took several flights with them recently and they were superb, including long haul flights. The Chinese Communist Party is making Hong Kong less and less attractive to tourists with more restrictive laws.
    Personally, I'd love to visit China and explore the beauty of the country, but can't help but be a little bit nervous about it because you just don't know what to expect.
    All these fears and trepidations are having a negative impact on Cathay, but things are beginning to improve with the airline and that's encouraging.

    • @steinwaldmadchen
      @steinwaldmadchen Месяц назад +8

      The problem is businesses are even more sensitive to those restrictive laws, and the larger trend of decoupling / friendshoring / whatsever. China's worsening economy is not helping either.
      As a result airlines are deploying smaller and older planes to HKG, while cargo carriers set up hubs elsewhere instead. I doubt Cathay can maintain current profitability in such an environment once the ticket prices return to pre-COVID levels.
      Regarding Chinese tourism, even if the regime is more open, the country itself is having some Galápagos syndrome, which makes it tricky for foreigners or even non-mainland Chinese to navigate around. International brand credit cards for example are seldom accepted.

    • @sainnt
      @sainnt Месяц назад

      @@steinwaldmadchen Wow, I didn't even know about those issues. However, I do think that Cathay has a strong enough brand to overcome those issues. A lot of goods are still made in China and they have to be shipped. Many businesses around the world, especially in Africa, purchase goods directly from China and most are flown out of Hong Kong. Once the political tensions die down, things will slowly trend towards normal

    • @steinwaldmadchen
      @steinwaldmadchen Месяц назад +1

      @@sainnt It's hard to predict the future, but for certain changes are expected.
      I don't doubt Cathay's management as long as they are still in Swire's hand. But they just won't be the same airline we used to know, for better or for worse.
      Will we see 5x daily between HKG and JFK again? Probably not. Maybe we might see them expanding elsewhere though.

    • @sainnt
      @sainnt Месяц назад

      @@steinwaldmadchenAgreed. However air travel is trending up. Decreasing business travel is making way for increasing leisure travel, and leisure travelers are also increasingly demanding comfortable travel, so premium carriers like Cathay still have a place in the industry. Their business model may evolve, but in the long run I think they'll be ok.

    The key decisions made by key executives for the Cathay group, including the cut of jobs and closure of Cathay Dragon, its regional brand that mainly operates Chinese routes, during the pandemic, in my opinion, is a wrong decision because it caused pilot and crew shortage that later caused flight cancellations between December 2023 and February 2024. Generally I have enjoyed the experience of flying with Cathay over SQ and BA. i do understand that the airline had struggled since covid but so did many other airlines. I flew with them recently on their a350s and 777-300ER, and I found that their economy class is a top-notch product. Their new IFE is definitely the best in the world, the meals and snacks are great, the seats are comfortable (especially on the a350-1000 it was super comfy!) and functional, and you can see that they are putting effort into their hard and soft product (Their new IFE, metal cutlery in economy). highly doubt CX will recover, serious mismanagement and disgruntled pilots. I know a few CX pilots who have left the airline for greener pastures. CX is a shell of what it was, I think it's been like this long before the HK protests and is not linked to it. CX downfall is self inflicted.

      Maybe the fact Air China’s bought a controlling stake in Cathay has something to do with it.

      Yeah but Air China has been a shareholder for a while, Swire still owns the largest share at 45% while Air China owns 30%. Although they may buy more shares, wouldn't be surprised if they eventually got absorbed into Air China given Swire is an example of colonial rule.

    One of these policies might be The New National Security Law article 23 prohibits anything against Xi Jinping. If you want another airline that offers the same five star Skytrax rated service as CX neighboring Japan South Korea Singapore and Taiwan offer on JL NH🇯🇵 KE OZ🇰🇷 SQ🇸🇬 and BR🇹🇼.

      Article 23 doesn’t say anything about Xi Jinping. I’ve read it.

    Hongkong tried to protest against the economy that fed the city, and is now paying the price. Ideological pursuits are not free, and the freedom fighters need to be ready to pay the price.

      Not really a Cathay issue but a broader HK issue. But that’s water under the bridge now.
