This was a quick video for me! I have never uploaded a video in the same day. Let me know if you like it and I will be happy to do more one-go videos like this! Up and close with JUJU! Let me know if you want me to cover anything specific for the keyboard lubing video!
Thank you SO much for this! I live in Brazil and it's to expensive to buy a switch opener because of the low value of BRL and the high cost for shipping, so this saved me so much money!
Those small watchmaker screwdrivers work well, they are small enough to fit. They sometimes sell them in supermarkets here for like 5€, shouldn't be too expensive even in Brazil.
If you want a really nice cheap aluminum switch opener, kiiboss is real good. Their MX switch opener is $21 and the kailh opener is $16. Real good quality and when I got it, it came in recyclable packaging! Edit: The prices are in USD and i have no connection with them i just think their openers are really good
Hey man I know you prob won’t see this but if you do I really need help with my keyboard. The plugin fell out and I don’t know how to put it back, please help
Hi, the switch opener that you mention in the description that you printed, does it work for the cherry MX switches? In the comments I only see people saying that it works for Tealios
I don't see those comments my friend, but there are two types of switch openers available: Cherry/Gateron/Kailh MX style Switches and Kalih Box Switches. The one I printed is a MX style switch opener :) It will open any switch which uses the MX switch housing style (4 legs) vs 2 lips (kailh box) Hope that helps!
That's great if they're loose. But how about then they're already installed in the keyboard? I Have a an Akko3108 v2 and all I want to do is change out one spring to something a little stiffer, But kind of afraid to snapping the case. Key appears to be Soldered. Suggestions Ideas? Help Obe-Wan You're my only hope.
Haha hey James! You could lube from the top with a very liquid lube! You can also desolder them. I would recommend maybe building one from scratch or wait till I make a tutorial on how to lube without desoldering.
@@goodjihad Thanks. I will try. Kind of hard to see how to release the key tops as they're the RGB (clear plastic) and I'm not sure how much abuse I can apply to them. The Cherry MX was relatively easy, but those were discrete and not soldered to the keyboard.
@@goodjihad Thats OK if you only want to lube it. But if you want to change characteristics - like changing from black to brown or blue, a way to open from the top would be much nicer. No way I will do soldering on my original Amiga 2000 Keyboard, "Braunschweig edition", with its Cherry blacks, only to make it Cherry blue instead (something I want to do for over 30 years now). The risk of acidently damaging the historic PCB is a bit high - and theese keyboards are pretty rare (only produced in Braunschweig, Germany, only in the beginning of Amiga 2000 production, only Amiga keyboard with Cherry switches, only Amiga with OEM profile doubleshot keycaps). They are the holy grail for Amiga users - and with a little Arduino you can pefectly use them on a PC, too. Only think I miss is the tactile feeling of a brown or blue switch...
Man I have a Nutcracker v2 and a kbdfans switch opener and I'm just now finding out today that opening Kailhs with them sucks. Bad. Haven't even done it successfully yet. Chances are I am doing something wrong though
before video: freaking frustrated noob, opening 1 in 5mins after video: IM A FREAKING ASSEMBLY LINE. Thank you for the tips!!!!! all I needed was a small flathead and advice from this vid
i used a small knife on a pocket knife and when i put them back on the legs don’t really fit in their usual position - they’re slightly bent away from the switch and the switch is now loose. good thing i tested it on a faulty switch before i did it to the ones on my keeb. the top housing is slightly more loose than its meant to be and doesn’t feel right. i’m prying each leg open but when i open the ones on the other side the opposite ones go back into place
It's possible you were prying on the plastic too hard. You should use a flat head screw driver friend :) You should just buy a switch opener! Don't risk it.
JUJU hmm the one on kbdfans is 25 dollars and the only other ones are on aliexpress, but they’ll take ages to arrive. i also tried doing it as if it was the kailh box thing and it seemed to work just fine, but the knife made a small mark on the plastic. don’t know if it’ll affect it too much since that part doesn’t come into contact with any other parts
I mistakenly bought yellow gateron switches for my k552 and they have no metal prongs, so I literally can not use them for my keyboard, whenever I put them in they pop in but no letters show up when I click them
Wait can I open my keyswitches without any use of that specific keyswitch tool? One of my button while removing a keycap got the white thing tilted which makes the keyswitch not smooth but rough and stucked when pushed down.
Uhm i was wondering why my switch opener wasn't working and now that i know how is supposed to go, i realized that my akko cs rose red switches are somehow like 0.5mm wider than the opener and thats why it doesn't work
I'm trying to open my Kailih speed silver switches with a switch opener but it won't work? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm literally pressing down on the switch like other people have demonstrated and it just doesn't open. How do I fix this?
You may want to use the Kailh switch opener that specifically to open Kailh switches or any other types of switches that use the same housing design like Kaih switches like Akko CS :D.
With that wide tab I feel like a small screwdriver should work. or a small knife like a box cutter/exacto-knife/stanley knife/utility blade (however they are called in your place)
quick question: do you know if the 3d printer link you sent (www.thingiverse.com/thing:2775085) is reliable/worked for you because someone one reddit said that they printed it and it didn't work out well.
It works right for me. My printer printed it very well. You can't print it on a crappy setting. It has to be printed on a high resolution so the pokey bits get under the switch. As you continue to use it the sides become smoother. You can sand them down if needed to make it smoother and more sharp to get under the switch clips.
1:27 - _Literally_ anything? Even with a bowling ball, or a tree? Or a mountain? I think our options are slightly more limited if we want to "open" the switch and still have it go back together in the end. 😉
Great video. Short, straight to the point, no fluff, and still explained everything properly. Exactly what I needed. Thank you!
My pleasure!
@@goodjihad What is the switch opened for?
This is a time where I’m really happy for having a 3D printer. No way am I spending 40 bucks for a switch opener when I can make one for free
True! The metal ones are worth it however, but yes 3d printing is a great alternative!
@@goodjihad i made a 3d printed one and it did not work for me as it was very tight and also one of the pegs broke off
nominalkeys use a harder material to 3D print them.
they are like $5 online lol
and $10-$20 for metal idk what this dude was on abt lol
i know this is just a video on how to take apart a switch, but this was very helpful! thanks mate!
thank mate, its descriptive, close up and clear
Thanks Ozzy!
"you can open switches with literally anything"
slowly looks over at dog
"I'm sorry. It has to be done"
Haha,
uses dog tooth
I know what I have to do but I don’t know if I have the strength to do it
I use wax carvers for removing switches from my hot swappable board, they would work for this too. Thanks for the demonstration. Great video.

This video was super easy to take in, informative and great to watch. Awesome job Juju
You are most welcome!
For Cherry/Gateron switches I use a pair of curve tipped tweezers and for Kailh I use the dull part of a rectangular box cutter blade.
literally this hehehe
Mannn please watch you fingers 😭😭😭. I don't want you to get hurt.
Thanks for the tips though! I will have to try it!
Straight to the point and good explanation. Well done.
Had to open some recently because they got wet and sticky. Work perfectly again.

thanks a lot! now i learned about how to remove switches now
This was exactly what I needed, thank you.

Remember the video you created about making your own keyboard? Can you list the case and key caps so I can build my own, also how much did it cost
Tofu 60 from KBDFans
Dz60 usbc pcb
Dsa hana from pimp my keyboard
Cream switches from NovelKeys
Krytox 205g0 lube
Approx $400 AUD off the noggin.

In my country the switch operner just about $0.05, and the alumunium one is about $5.
"something sharp to get under those legs" can a blunt roundish one work?
LMAO WHAT A SWITCH OPENER IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN A PACK OF GLORIOUS HOLY PANDAS

For some reason, when I pop my gateron brown switches off my keyboard, that only have the one plastic middle pin. Does this mean I can't replace them?

thanks bro
MrDalekJD, is that you?
Ok so im getting nk silk black switches right, what switch opener should I get?
canu make a video where u remove the inside white part of a mx blue
and do a typing test
You can buy the aluminum ones on AliExpress for like $2-$5...
cheers mate
could of used this before i broke 6 banana splits
The kit I bought had a metal opener the entire time and I thought it was just a keychain. :( Its much better than ripping my thumbs open with tweezers
Wait can I open my keyswitches without any use of that specific keyswitch tool? One of my button while removing a keycap got the white thing tilted which makes the keyswitch not smooth but rough and stucked when pushed down.

how about GL switches ? the feet broke and stayed inside
Uhm i was wondering why my switch opener wasn't working and now that i know how is supposed to go, i realized that my akko cs rose red switches are somehow like 0.5mm wider than the opener and thats why it doesn't work
What do I use to open my gateron silent red switches?
Dogs Tooth works well ;) (Please take this as a joke, please!)
Watch the video please! :) - You can use a switch opener or a sharp tool as suggested.
recently I bought a few gateron red switches and try to open it
boi it was too tight and difficult to open, even switch opener didn't really help
Once you find a way, it becomes easier. Each switch casing is different due to stresses etc i would think so i agree.
Will a gate Gateron switch opener work on a gateron optical brown?

@@huunhanle3809 I actually got it a couple hours later. Turns out I had to push the switch in differently. I appreciate your help, though.
What's the cheapest / easiest way for Kail types?
With that wide tab I feel like a small screwdriver should work. or a small knife like a box cutter/exacto-knife/stanley knife/utility blade (however they are called in your place)
Where did you get the big switches
Tf the metal switch opener is more expensive than both my keyboard and mouse combined
0:01 no and yes because I have kbdfans switch opener, which opens switch easily but is very sharp and I cut my finger first time I tried it XD
Ohh dang! Definitely sharp!
