Ultima Ascension is one hell of a great game, with lotsa immersive experience, great voice act, great ownership, ... I which SoTA can "borrow" some of those "Love" over ...
I loved Ultima and I revered Richard Garriott. First mistake was not being lawyered up enough against Electronic Arts. Since when did a corporation with hungry investors know anything about art? Second mistake, (Richard is only human), Following the lead of the competition. Intense graphics, 3d engines and hack and slash of the lowest common denominator that lead to a cannibalistic death spiral of ideas. I promise to do my best and support these new endeavors.. Good luck Richard!
If he didn't come up with it, then he probably popularized it. The first Ultima came out the same year as Frogger, so he can really call himself one of the first. Though for *all* the innovation? Probably not. But he has a deep stretching background.
I remember Tabula Rasa and the fact he avoids even mentioning it makes me extremely nervous to get invested in anything this man does. Let alone something that looks as bad as Shroud of the Avatar. I'd love for him to prove me wrong though because I'm all for new games.
It's noticeable comparing Garriot's skin tones between the shots, but really not that bad. The wide shot looks a tad more greenish, but the slight over exposure stands out more to me. More than anything, the close up is a bit too shaky for my tastes. Camera was obviously hand-held, and it's not easy hand-holding a camera for almost a half-hour straight (I've been there). Some sticks or a good monopod coupled with an IS lens would've done wonders. Still, I'm nitpicking -- it's a good video.
Agreed. Unfortunately, Ultima never went far past Ultima 7 Part Two. Pagan was ok-ish, but it was so rushed that it wasn't 1/3 of what it could have been. Ultima IX was such a disappointment, I can't even tell...
I just bought into Shroud, it's actually very good for the stage of development it is in...if you are a PC RPG player, I would highly recommend everyone pledge / back Shroud of the Avatar. there are many different pledge levels allowing you to not break your bank.
I never liked the Tapestry of Ages just from an artistic perspective, but more than just the aesthetics, the illustrative style didn't feel like fit into the game world, much less on a tapestry. It would have been nicer if it was based on Medieval tapestry design.
Racism is learned, but usually through experience of the other, who act in ways that make others exclude them or accept them, but mostly, people that aren't racist in an exclusionary sense, disappear. His games are amazing, but he was an early victim of self hatred.
I do agree shooters become more prevelant during the start of a generation, but we are coming at the end of a generation and we are STILL playing mindless shooters, we really need obsidian/inexile/portalarium to save us from this gaming crash, i dont even think it has anything to do with graphics and its too many publishers wanting to cash in on mainstream children who only play FPS, game sales are at a all time low and we already have estimates of low sales for new gen consoles, we need games
I feel bad that he actually showed the Tapestry of Ages from Ultima 9, because it's so full of plot holes it should be illegal to have it part of the canon of Ultima. Ultima fans agree there hasn't been a real sequel to Ultima 7. Pagan was a rushed piece of shit ruined by EA and Ascension was...... well, just type "Ultima Ascension What's a Paladin" on RUclips to get a brief glimpse of just how insultingly bad that game was, basically a huge middle finger to anyone who ever loved the series.
The problem with this is Garriott places himself as the forerunner of every RPG innovation! Cmon Garriott! Dig back, and see yourself as the humble man you once were! Only then will you be the inception of the RPG forefront!
Really dissapointing editing for a site like Kotaku... sounds jump, camera is instable at some points, why is 1 guy using a microphone while the other isn't? Really distracting stuff for an otherwise interesting video.
Lol I keep wanting to get up while I am watching this to grab my scissors those damn rat tails need to come off. I don't care what a god at game creation and space exploration he is he just cant pull those off lol
Thank you Richard for endless hours of entertainment!
UO = Hands down the best MMO of all time!!!
Complete artist, one man studio.
One of the best.
Ultima Ascension is one hell of a great game, with lotsa immersive experience, great voice act, great ownership, ... I which SoTA can "borrow" some of those "Love" over ...
fucking legend, idealist, maverick, genius.
i hope sota will turn out phenomonal
What to say.. just a genius mind, so down to Earth and articulate, who has touched so many lives.. Thank you, Richard...
When Lord British talks, I listen!

the two strings growing out of the back of Richard Garriott's head are awesome !
Check the interviews made by Spoony, its much more personal and interesting. MY TWO CENTS
"How to make apple 2 art" Doesn't even feature him.

There's a bit at 18:55 where the sounds dips out. Richard Garriott says "It doesn't translate as well as you might think"
I'm bummed the list of his accomplishments on the Shroud KS video doesn't mention Stygian Abyss, which ALSO forever changed CRPGs.
this guy is a robot. every single interview is the exact same.
I remember Tabula Rasa and the fact he avoids even mentioning it makes me extremely nervous to get invested in anything this man does. Let alone something that looks as bad as Shroud of the Avatar. I'd love for him to prove me wrong though because I'm all for new games.
The second episode is further down in the kotaku article.

I liked the comment about the space travel.
Nice to hear an honest and adequate perspective :)
He should be the salesman guy for space travel :D
Richard Garriot. He is to the world of computer role playing what Madonna was for Pop, AC/DC for Rock.
Derivative and by-the-numbers?
21:26 - Richard Garriott became temporarily omnipotent
A ton of camera switches, but they couldn't fix the sound levels in post? :(
PLEASE REVAMP AND RE RELEASE ULTIMA ONLINE!
You will make a shitload of money everyone LOVES old school UO.
I just bought into Shroud, it's actually very good for the stage of development it is in...if you are a PC RPG player, I would highly recommend everyone pledge / back Shroud of the Avatar. there are many different pledge levels allowing you to not break your bank.
Whats a Paladin ?

Except he has mentioned it, in several of these interviews.
Intense and vivid graphics get in the way of your imagination.
Simple visual suggestions should be a template for your imagination.
Oh, oh! Ultima II came out the same year as the E.T atari game! Interesting reading, this is.
Not in either of these interviews with Kotaku or the ones with Polygon.
Was Garriott talking about Thief: The Dark Project?

what's with the sound levels?
AM HAPPY RICH

Wow, 100,000 dollars in 1980. Why you could buy a whole 10 apple lisa's with that in 1980! And that my friend was quite a steal... wait...
What a genius..!!
but you didn't mention pikey, cockney, kentish, geordie, cumbrian and so on... tut tut
I feel bad that he actually showed the Tapestry of Ages from Ultima 9, because it's so full of plot holes it should be illegal to have it part of the canon of Ultima.

2:41 Must be new math.
This may be the booze talking...but, I think the bridge between mobile gaming and PC gaming is going to be the Oculus Rift.
The problem with this is Garriott places himself as the forerunner of every RPG innovation! Cmon Garriott! Dig back, and see yourself as the humble man you once were! Only then will you be the inception of the RPG forefront!
He's an American astronaut.

Holy dicks Lord British is doing a shitton of interviews.
there's no such thing as that.
Lol I keep wanting to get up while I am watching this to grab my scissors those damn rat tails need to come off. I don't care what a god at game creation and space exploration he is he just cant pull those off lol

Ios is as crap as ever
Terrible Interviewer! Do you not realize who you are speaking to?
