Odd. My father's colleague was killed by a nail shot from a nail gun. The nail penetrated a wall (I don't know what kind) and hit a poor guy in another room. It ricochetted on his knee and struck him in the heart. Now that I think of it, this may have been an effect of the tool giving the nail too much momentum.
I used to target practice with them from the roof of the houses I was framing while waiting for a board to be passed up to me... They would go 50 yards from up there... somebody else was paying for the nails of course.
Here in the UK, people aren't allowed ANY kind of weapon for defending their home. A nail gun would be an alternative, with a plausible excuse for ownership.
but as you see in this video, a nail gun sucks as a weapon. A better alternative would be an alcohol gun, I think it's a concept with much potential. But I have only seen crappy asian videos about the concept. I wish there was better how to videos on the subject on how to make a good one.
Barney Stinson Not really, maybe they'd end up making a weaponized nailgun? That's going to be worth watching. Adam: "Firing the automatic nail gun in three, two, one!" *Target gets fucked* Adam: "Haha! Nailed it!" and all this while, Jamie is facepalming at the number of puns the crew will throw out.
I used an industrial bolt gun around 13 years ago, that could run on air and blanks, and with the blanks it pushed the whole key cylinder and the thing that hold the cylinder thrue the door. Was quite amazed by the force.
I did try that back a year or so ago, but the video video came out terrible. Not only that, the Ramset nail gun kept acting up. Results were much more impressive out to 5 yards.
+Parks Parks Won't make much difference, nail guns, concrete stud drivers etc all have the same design/function..........A striker forces the nail/bolt/brad into the material in the same way a hammer would but by using the one very quick, powerful strike, As soon as the nail leaves the gun it loses energy FAST and won't fly straight, and at 100fps that isnt enough energy to penetrate anyway, it is the force of the Striker itself inside the gun that does the work, driving the nail into the material
+tapper88 why would a nail lose energy fast after leaving the tool as you say? I would say that if it can penetrate 2 inches of wood then its going to fly quite far with the same energy.
So I work in a hardware store in Baltimore, and gee wilkers about 15 years ago this girl who could pass for a guy walks in and spends 669 plus taxes on nail throwing mayhem, gave me a bump too. I wonder whatever happened to that sweet lady?
How many tire tubes and repair kits do you have? Thats a lot of nails across the yard. If I did that, no doubt I'd manage to find every single one of them. Congrats bro.
+Mike Gerrie I saw a high pressure air tank shoot a pencil through a 3/4 inch pine board back in the 60's when that sort of activity was acceptable for children's television.
+Mike Gerrie Would destroy the seals of the gun. Much better off just building a high pressure purge system leading out of a thick polymer tube, that way you'd be giving it a barrel to gain velocity in under confinement when the pressure is released. The nail gun just sparks ideas in my opinion, it isn't a weapon on it's own.
Mike Gerrie acually i have seen some timber joinery guys use a scuba tank. Although it may have been nitrogen. Not sure what pressure it had but apparently for finish pinnong on cedar beads around glass its easier just to bring a tank out for the day.
I think you should have used one of the extremely large tanks with higher psi for the pneumatic. The pressure was obviously going down when you used it. In some furniture shops I would be surprised if they didn't use double or triple tank systems that pressure regulate from higher to lower.
That test was apples to oranges on the pneumatic nail gun the first set of nails had a full air tank but when you switch to the heavier nails the compressor was on trying to fill the tank so it didn't have as much air pressure.
Fun video. Something to consider- There's no barrel. If someone could figure out a way to rig up a barrel onto this thing and modify each nail to ensure a seal to the barrel (Sabot?)- My guess is that you'd almost have something to replace the bb gun with. Haha :-p Reminds me of that Happy Gilmore scene.
Considering the surface on which the air is forced is right at the wavefront's side, the 'tip' of the nail would end up scraping against the inside of the barrel at an angle long before it leaves said barrel, ultimately causing it to tumble from the moment the tip of the nail has an opportunity to start pushing in an even more obtuse direction. Ergo, you'd probably have a spinning nail by the time it's leaving the barrel and a *worse* velocity at that as the air-seal gets broken once the contact area becomes an elipse in a circular barrel, allowing air past it while an edge is still in contact and causing friction on the nail. Best-case scenario you'd have a cylindrical 'plug' behind each nail to ensure there's a constant wavefront forcing the nail forward and keeping the head perpendicular to the barrel. But that's not how nailguns nor standard nails for the things are designed, so unless one could modify the nails used to have such a plug on their heads also it's a *glasses* pipe dream. (yeaaaahhh)
Bullets use rifling, i.e. they spin. Keeps them straight. Without the spin they tumble. These nails would tumble through the air. **KIMI SPOILER ALERT** Having just watched #KimiMovie, I was looking for proof of my theory that nailguns are not guns.
Anyone who works with power tools like a roofing nailer and brings their own truck to a job site requiring one is probably a seasoned professional in putting in a tire plig
+The Eternal Hermit Well for starters, it is being propelled a lot closer, point blank to be exact. Also, he has such a tiny compressor that every time he fired, it lost a considerable amount of pressure. The speed of the nail also drastically decreases the farther it goes. It is like how if you were hit by a bullet from 100 ft away, you have a greater chance of surviving than if you get shot point blank. But yeah you are right because the air needs to go somewhere so it pushes the nail deeper into the wood to get out of the nail gun.
+Brian P Kuhn Exactly. Once the head of the nail looses contact with the striker, velocity falls off quickly. We may see exactly how far a nail will shoot distance wise in the next video
+Brian P Kuhn Except that 100 feet won't make hardly any difference in the lethality of most bullets. Bullets are aerodynamic - they'll travel quite a distance before air resistance slows them much. Nails are.....not. They tumble through the air and will slow very quickly.
+The Eternal Hermit It isn't launched by the air itself, the air is used to push forward a rod that "hammers" the nail into a board. Once the rod is no longer in contact with the nail, there is no more transfer of kinetic energy. It works on the factor of torque rather than velocity.
I've used nail guns for years and always thought their use in movies was laughable but I never did anything to prove it. Thanks for taking the time to do this myth busting! (The next video you make can feature those nails shooting out from a lawn mower whose blades are spinning at 18,000 fpm!)

Ahh yes, the good guy grabs the nailer and lets the bad guy have it... leathal weapon 2 I think it was. From what I can tell, the nail only has a fair amount of force behind it when it is being directly pushed by the striker. This would explain why a nail will go through 3 inches of wood with ease for the first 3 inches of it's travel, but not be able to go through a 1/4 inch sheet of lauan after a foot of travel. Once the contact with the striker is over the nail is relatively safe.
you would need to have a barrel on the nail gun so that it could build up pressure...and maybe some rifling for accuracy...then it would be much more powerful...
This is one case where a smaller nail gun might actually perform better. The velocity you're getting is limited by the inertia of the piston so the energy transfer to the nail is atrocious unless there's some additional resistance. A smaller nail gun with a smaller piston would have less internal inertia and better energy transfer, but how much better would require testing. The other option would be to use heavier nails.
