I would have snuck a small LED into the end of the barrel so the tip also lights up when they fire, to make it clear they're shooting. It's damn genius, though.

at my local con we had a family that had built a Dalek their son loved to sit in the hall way in the dalek not moving till a good group had gathered to take photos. then he would move speak or charge them and scare the crap out of the on lookers who thought it was just a stationary prop

I'm assuming that since this is Ottawa the rules are slightly different but I know several major Cons here in the US that would kick you out for something like this. Food for thought I suppose.
