As someone with the F-4S and tell you what in this summer with 1month of rock hard grinding as a skill issue who didn’t play much in the pass, I got from the F80 to the F16ADF. No matter if ur in dogfight or ur to bomb, the f4s is a ligit worthy plane for grinding the US techtree. The Aim9Hs aren’t great but the Aim7f definitely does the job well. :D
So pulse doppler radars all measure speed to obtain targets with rates of closure (this is why being 90 degrees to the radar allows you to notch a pd radar as you have no speed relative to the radar set) in order to filter out the ground which is stationary. Normal PD modes convert this information and display the distance to target such as on the mig29 radar. PDV radars or Pulse Doppler Velocity leave this information based upon the velocity which the target is closing the distance between the two of you. This is why on the f4s radar in PDV mode there is a greyed out speed range which is the speed range which the radar filters out targets as clutter. HDN mode or headon mode iirc emits a different frequency wave intended to extend the search range and generally against targets with moderately high rates of closure. Generally HDN modes are easier to notch, especially at closer ranges on most radars although with more advanced radars like on the mig29 smt the difference is negligible in most cases. If you have trouble getting locks in the f4s or f14 in side and rear aspect it is because the PD modes are head on modes only and the rate of closure between the radar and target is lower than is ideal to maintain a solid lock. you can switch to regular search mode if altitude permits and as long as the target does not chaff before the missile is launched it should guide in even if they chaff after launch. Simply maintain the lock and as long as they don't properly maneuver it should track.
I suggest you bind "throttle down" to your flare key when flying hot planes, like the phantom and tomcat. That way you'll automatically cut your afterburner as you flare
still baffles me they made the best F-4 in the US tree a premium. Meanwhile the F-4E gets to sit on its hands as they ignore the upgrade program that gave it at least 7F's.
i mean. the F-4J is basically the same as the S with a radar that's only a tiny bit worse and no agile eagle aero package. still has 7Fs and a pulse doppler radar

Last being relevant in Sim and mostly for base bombing, as it doesn't draw radar locks unlike newer jets.
Hello MrUnivers, I hope you do read comments regularly, I want to share something with you. As we all know, flying low has been a viable tactics against radar missiles for well over a year now, but for the past 2 days I have noticed some worrying trend. Especially yesterday, during my longer session, when I was swapping between my Mig29SMT and F16AJ, I have been hit by the Aim7F quite often (I believe all of them were fired by F4S, but dont remember for sure), even though I was literally hugging the ground, as usual. And it wasnt always just one certain scenarios, but rather it hit me from various angles, various speeds, sometimes they hit me from up above, sometimes we were both on the ground level. I dont understand, and I dont feel safe anymore. :D Did you notice anything similar? Was Aim7F shadow buffed? Or was F4S radar shadow buffed? I must say it kind of sucks, I used to kind of rush in to battle, knowing radar missiles cannot hit me and IR missiles are easily flareable head on, but now I think I will need to re-evaluate my tactics...
I check some footage I recorded yesterday and it indeed still works. If you are ever unsure what went wrong replays is the way to go. If it hits the ground then you are too low and if it hits you direct then you are too high.
Both the F-5c and f-4s are great jets. probably the best of all premiums. but in terms of fun and actual knowledge to earn. The f-5c is so much fun and a great grinder. but the f-4s will teach you alot for top tier and will make your top tier experience better once you do get to top tier.
Bombing with the f-4s isn't cringe because if you carry bombs and missiles you can get extra XP from bombing bases and if you just want to carry bombs good because grinding is better than not grinding and whatever is a useful strategy is a useful strategy to get to top tier

I think base bombing with it (and then joining the fight) is valid, especially for newbies.. I mean.. Playing dozens of matches with likely very little or no kills (and thus no score, no rewards) would be very demotivating..
thats exactly what Im trying to do. Just bought the F-4s so im heading to bomb then trying to join some dogfights which so far I get shot everytime lol. Takes time

I have to questions for the timestamp 3:55 : First of all, why did you rotate your aircraft upside down facing the ground, after flaring 2 times? And why did you carry no chaff and all flares?
Went upside down to prepare to dodge any incoming missiles he may have gotten off before i could plus it was an f-14 so still had all aspect IR missiles so flared just incase and chaff is completely useless in war thunder, i have a guide on how to survive more and theres a way to dodge radar missiles 100% of the time so having more flares for insane IR missiles is just the best way to go

well for the roll. Going down and rolling at a certain angle prevents the missile from being able to pull into me. and or to get low to make the missile hit the ground
HMD PD is the way to go, it can be accessed via 1 Change radar/IRST type and 2 Overhorizon attack button cant remember exact name of it but its that one. Its great as you can freelook around and use it as a lookdown shootdown and generally a much more capable radar system. Also people will tell you not to use Pulse Doppler as it is super easy to notch but one drop of chaff and a regular radar lock is gone. Doesn't matter what the other plane does after, it's gone
I’ve been rewatching this episode so many times. I’d like to see more of gameplay of F4S. Even after getting F16C, I still love playing F4S, cause it’s such a truck loaded with firepower at 11.3

Then wait another year for 12.7-13.0 jets to arrive, they should suck up 4th gens into new top tier black hole, while 11.0-11.3 prolific premiums should form their own haven.

I swear my F-4s is broken, I have had it for a few months now but every shot I take with the IR missiles I miss, the Ir missiles on the A10 work fine but on the F4s I've only ever gotten about 2 kills in my career with those missiles, the sparrows work fine

9H is plenty good enough, just not ideal when uptiered every match :p

@@wehttam1461 stay very low and very fast :D I usually get there just fine but often the bases are gone because many people are trying to bomb them..
Can you bring 10x missiles? I saw the loudout being able to carry 6x Aim-7Fs
In rear aspect with the F-4S, switch to normal SCR mode. Even if your radar gets chaffed rear aspect, the sparrow will go for the enemy

Chaff is useless at top tier. I have a video on how to survive more which explains it in detail why chaff isn’t worth taking

i prefer to bomb in the f4s as 1 base bomb gets me the same amount of research as 3 kills plus i can still carry all my missiles

I always switch to pulse Doppler as you can track/locate targets at great distances 80km+ then fire when they are within 40km

i am not a really experienced player i am lvl 24 and wanna grind the U.S tech tree what premium do you recommend?
smth below tier 6, you will die in the first 200 matches very easily if u buy an f5c or smth like that bc theres just too much to learn
F5C if you want to learn to aim and dogfight, F4S if you want to grind faster and learn mechanical stuff like missiles and radar.
I think f5c is more consistent for grinding. Drop bombs on 1 base and go dogfight right after.

you wont flare good ir missiles if you keep afterburner on as its a massive amount of heat

The one at the end had after burner off. you can tell by looking with your eyes top left. :) aim9j is crazy good now
