    Even though Darryl Strawberry was 9-for-9 with 9 HR on the day in the championship game, manager Burns called on Simpson to pinch hit for the platoon advantage, and he got a walk-off HBP. It's what smart managers do to win ballgames.

    I love the breakdowns of platoon hitters, and it makes me appreciate everyday players so much more. I'd love some breakdowns on reverse split seasons, like K Schwarb and what pitches he's hitting vs previous years

    so an underrated thing about platoons in baseball in general, is that SPs are becoming more platoon heavy in their pitch mixes. Pitchers won't throw sweeper/slider to opposite handed batters and won't throw specific pitches (sinker, cutter etc) to same handed batters. It's part of the reason that offense is down as a whole. Teams are not only platooning hitters more than ever before, but they're also trying to gameplan for those platoons with their SP pitch mixes.

    Great video! Platooning and the strategy of matchups were always one of my personal favourite aspects of Baseball and what makes it so unique compared to any other sport (along with other things). Also, I figured that Lamonte Wade was due for a big year but I never expected him to go off like he has. He has always been underrated and Im glad that he is finally getting the respect he deserves

  • @victorcsavage

    Thanks a ton for breaking down this topic so well! Platooning is something I vaguely understood as a baseball non-watcher, so going through how actual examples work helped spell it out for me. It does remind me of another topic I want to learn more about, that being the importance of handedness in starting pitchers. I get how having lefty and righty relievers is important, but I've wondered what the importance of handiness in starters is considering their value comes from having to face an entire lineup and focus on run prevention across tons of innings. Anyway, thanks again for such a well done video.

    He almost exclusively DHs because he’s really bad defensively, but he did play 1st for a month or two while Mountcastle was injured.

    I've always thought it was interesting, because when I played I *hated* facing lefties. I felt like I couldn't see anything cause I could only see the pitchers profile. Against righties I was kind of "facing" them, and I had a much easier time tracking the ball. With lefties it felt like the ball was just shot from behind their body right at me.
    My only theory is there are more lefties the higher up you go level wise. HS and below its right around the general population average of 10ish percent, but by the time you get to MLB its almost 1/3rd of your ABs youll see a lefty. Since I didn't play beyond high school I almost never saw any lefties

    It’s crazy that Joc actually did decent against lefties in the minors and has still always been a platoon hitter his entire career, even though he’s probably only had less than half a season’s worth of AB’s against lefties in his career. He could end up being legit terrible against lefties but it seems like it’d be worth giving him a shot since he’s such an elite hitter against righties. Never getting AB’s against lefties definitely seems like it’d make it extremely hard to finally face one if you’re not used to it.

    • @marcr196
      @marcr196 2 месяца назад

      Issue is there's a lot more righties who rake against lefties and they are much cheaper than the inverse. Not worth giving guys like Joc a chance when you can get someone who hits at 125 OPS+ against lefties and costs like $3M

  • @gkdunch
    @gkdunch 2 месяца назад

    another reason for players getting worse at pinch hitting is because they are probably only facing bullpen arms, who perform better per pitch than starters, being forced to get a plate appearance or two against setup guys and closers is a lot harder than an average starter
    also, just as a suggestion for the future, sample size should probably be in the graphics next to their slash line, a -27 ops+ doesn't happen in large sample sizes and i know you said it but it would help being able to see next to their stats too, great video otherwise!

    • @ABrandNewBallGame
      @ABrandNewBallGame  2 месяца назад

      I had the idea in my head that showing the sample sizes would make the screen more cluttered and therefore, just mentioning the small sample would suffice. But, I think I agree with you, I should probably just put the sample there anyways. I appreciate it!

    Also, relieve pitchers have a minimum batters limit (if they start the inning) and RP starting games should be taken into consideration.

    • @ABrandNewBallGame
      @ABrandNewBallGame  2 месяца назад

      Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, I was mostly trying to focus on pinch hitting because of how often a platoon bat needs to do it. I was not trying to make it a representation of clutch, although it can be part of it.
