These two fighters hav the heart and soul of a warrior and gave everything they had, great skill, great will, all heart, the ref was on his game for not trying to insert himself into the action, and the commentary was brilliant!! I get goosebumps every time I watch this!! This is what sports SHOULD be all about, just good ole honest competition between two MEN going mano to mano, with no showboating or egotistical chest thumping, none of that crap!!! Let's be serious here. If the ref had stopped the fight there, no one would have complained. Why did he let the fight continue? Because Gatti was the home fighter and was meant to steam roll Ward to set up a title fight.
On paper this was a walk over for Gatti, it was one to pad the record. Micky was seen as a journeyman with 11 losses on his record and one foot in retirement, and Micky wasn't all that good. He could be outboxed quite easily as both his footwork and defense were not the best, but if you got into a brawl with him, he'd most likely out tough you and beat you up.
Gatti was never the same after the trilogy with Ward.

Boxing is such an incredible and brutal sport. The beauty is in seeing the 2 fighters whos relationship grows as each round passes. The crowds, the cheering, the jeering, all of it is drowned out and means nothing as each round passes and each new wound is influcted. All that matters is the 2 guys fighting and standing like warriors, looking at each other in the eyes with I can only imagine growing compassion and love for what they are both sacrificing at that moment in a battle like this. Thats why towards the final rounds in all matches that go the distance, the 2 fighters hatred towards each other has diminished, all that animosity bullshit they do duringpre fight marketing campaigns, all of it is gone, and all thats left is mutual respect. Youll see it in Ali v Frazier, youll see it in Tyson v Douglas..
