    What a great idea. I actually have some of these buried under an old barn that fell down. Now I have a reason to dig them out.

    I would reinforce the corners with some metal strapping. Cool to see what I was hoping could be done.

    I did pretty much this exact same thing 14 years ago back in 2012 (3/4" ply bottoms, VERY thick PP liner, concrete footers for base). Talk about a ton of work! Lasted great up until recently. Somehow, somewhere there is a leak / hole seemingly in the PP liner, not even sure how it would have happened. Pulled back the gavel but haven't been able to locate it. Also, all 3 beds started leaking at the hole where the syphon drain was. Once they start leaking the ply is quickly ruined and can't get them to seal back up.

    I thought he was moving and installing those incredibly heavy boxes by himself because no one else was there, then i see people in the background lol. Nice work there! I saw some advice that might work for some folks. If you are lining a pond with plastic, only attach one side of the plastic to wood to hold it, then fill with water. Let water fill entire space, then fasten lining all the way around. In terms of a food grade hydro/aquaponics plastic lining, Duraskrim or some similar material might be worth investment...

    Question: After the growing cycles and it's time for cleaning, how do you handle that you have 100's of pounds of stone on a breachable liner? Doesn't it have to be removed to clean?... or what?

    Smooth mobile home roofing..Can be used -to replace that osb and it will not rot away in two or three years ..-like what you are doing, now ..-is going to happen.. water inside of that plastic ..-potentially-is going to create wetness against that OSB ..and it’s not going to last you.. as..- did not coat.. it, with anything.. 👍I did what you did and it rooted- through.. in 3 yrs

    The thing about planning ahead is really interesting. Here in Germany, even in the "countryside", you have almost everything just a few km away. There is some planning of course, but not a big problem if you forget something. Can you tell us a bit how it is to live "in the middle of nowhere" and what that means with respect to "daily" shopping, access to medical service etc. and how it affects the overall life? How fast is the delivery service in such a remote area? I doubt that UPS or FedEx would visit you every day.

    I might be a bit late and you might not even need them if all your beds have the wire underneath them all. But, IF you find yourself joining sheets of plywood together and you don't want them sagging individually this is the part you need to check into:
    www.fastenal.com/products/details/0226543
    They are called plywood clips and they work like a charm with no additional labor.

    Isn't it beneficial to run the water through a UV filter to suppress the algae?

    • @GrantButler
      @GrantButler 7 лет назад

      Edward McKinnon I don't know anything about aquaponics, but I would imagine that the UV filter would be great for the water you're able to pull out, but the algae would probably stick to a lot of the rocks and still continue to grow in the existing water.

    • @ivanpap634
      @ivanpap634 7 лет назад +3

      UV will kill the beneficial bacterias that makes aquaponics work.

      can't sneak anything past you :-) yes it does...that is unavoidable because I have to measure the drill hole in place due to the wire racking and it's position relative to the center of the bed.

    Why have you stopped wearing your back brace? You do not want to further injure your back. Trust me, I used to think it was no big deal. Fast forward to the present, I have been suffering for over two years and had to go on disability. I live every day in some level of pain, tolerable at best, medicated at worst. The prudent wear of a back brace would have made a world of difference. Just friendly advice, you are an inspiration to many and I would not like to see your dream ended.

My Grandfather had a belt and wore it way too much and ended up hurting himself more then helping so I'm super sensitive to it.
