Reminds me of a quote I heard from another artist: "A good drawing with no details is still a good drawing, a bad drawing with a lot of details in a polished turd". As someone who started figure drawing this month, I'm in the process of trying to learn which details to omit and which to include to make a more convincing drawing. I already found the belly button to be very important as you said, and the rest I'm still trying to figure out through trial and error. But I like your approach to drawings hands and fingers, I might try to incorporate that, since my hands still look like a child drew them.
Some of you may have seen that Croquis Cafe is now available only to people that donate. They had to make this change unexpectedly due to Vimeo high bandwidth usage fees, which only hit the most popular accounts. Anyway, the CC guys are going to help us ensure LLD viewers can still do Figuary for free which is very cool of them. We are still figuring the details though so watch this space. Thanks!
I can't believe it's figuary time again already. Last year I broken my right collar bone in February and did figuary with my left hand, it was a great experience. I haven't done lots of figure drawing since then though, as I focused more on portrait drawing and painting
Regarding the face: Attempting to add natural crevices or wrinkling or shadowing, especially to younger people, tends to ruin everything every time. Expressive lines and such seem to really be better as short-hand interpretation. In my humble (in)experience, attempting to replicate complex shadows and furrows and wrinkles across a face is a surefire way to make it a crowded, uncanny, creepy mess. When people attempt to do this with babies especially, the results are usually on the border of hilarious and terrifying. :)
Nails! So often I have a nice, well-proportioned drawing of a hand or foot and then add the nails and they don't seem to fit :-/ Perhaps the mistake is adding the nails last when the outline of the finger or toe is already down or perhaps I'm drawing them with lines that are too strong and dark. Any chance of a Love Life Drawing session on nails? I would love to be able to "nail" them ;-)
This video helps explain a lifelong problem I've had with drawing a character consistently. I used to draw characters focusing on character A having a certain eye shape, hair style, basic head shape, but I wasn't focused on the character's general 3d form. Without a consistent shape and form of the body and head, it's like I'm not even drawing the same person. They say that the eyes are the feature that people look at the most, but that's only given that all of the bigger shapes are consistent. Without a consistent form on which the eyes are drawn, no one will be convinced you're drawing the same person, even when you're tacking on the same eyes and hair on each panel.
Extremely helpful, especially with the hair, cranium, and face segments! Sometimes I'll have a hard time with head/facial proportions. Thank you so much!
My gosh. This video was what I needed. I've got a general workflow going for laying out the figure, but when it comes to actually emphasizing the details, I get lost and emphasize the wrong stuff. I'll certainly be coming back to this video when I draw next. I'm stoked to participate in Figuary!
Croquis Cafe announced a few days ago on Instagram that their content is now exclusive to their donors and teachers with a usage agreement. That is a legit move considering the effort they put in providing reference material for artists, but how will that affect the conditions for participation in Figuary?
As I understand it (from today's CC Instagram post) you need to pay a fee - 36$ for one year - to be able to access their videos. That goes for both Figuary and the regular weekly videos. On the plus side, 3$ a month is really not a lot for the great content they are offering.
First, thank you for all your effort, you are helping me tremendously. Just one question, i feel stuck on gesture, i did figuary 2020, the half of 2019 but what to do next? How can i progress to make a 'full' figure drawing (ofc i keep doing gestures every day). Whats the step after Gesture?
Good question! you can also work on your simple forms - e.g. volumetric drawings of the figure with cylinders etc. you can build your anatomical knowhow. Figure drawing is a balance of structure and gesture, and those things i mentioned will build your structural side. with that balance in place, you can do a quick or a longer more sophisticated drawing
I think that you have to "create an account" for vimeo now. Much like you sign into You tube to get content that you want. I had the same problem but I created an account (Free) and was able to get the videos.
@@fionalittle2108.Fiona, When you get into Vimeo type Croquis Cafe into the search box. Once the next screen comes up select "Channels" and 9 boxes should come up with a different number of videos in each. Hope it works for you

I’ve just realised I could have been drawing hands better all this time, thank you for this video! Can’t wait for figuary!
Let me know what details you find add a ton to a figure drawing, or which details always ruin the drawing when you add them!
Thx kenzo
