Thank you Oliver all your videos are useful. Now I know what do I need before arriving and what to expect. I really like winter and it was my dream visiting nordic countries so studying in Finland it's awesome! Greetings from Italy
Hey Kawtar and thanks so much for sharing this. Im happy to hear that these videos are bringing some value to people around the world. Do let me know if you have any further questions that i could help with 👍
Great advice. I would encourage everyone to get a tutor, even if you arrive out of sync with most other students. I have been in Finland for 3 weeks now, and I am very grateful for my tutor. She really helped me get around in the beginning and we still like to hang out. I would also recommend going to some second hand stores pretty early on. They are great and have many basics you'll need for way less than any regular store. If you don't find something the first time, just come back a couple of times, the stock seems to change pretty quickly in most stores. In addition to that it might be helpful to check if your first or last name also exist in Finland as this might cause confusion in some cases.
@@leelee1320 Yes, several ones. Sometimes they have them in separate rooms, so you have to ask for it. And even if they don't have it they might know other stores nearby who have.
Lee Lee, if you are in the capital region, i would recommend these two shops: ○ Helsinki reuse centre (Kierrätyskeskus in Finnish): www.kierratyskeskus.fi ○ Reuse and rescue: facebook.com/reuseandrescue/ Please note that for some godforsaken reason the website for the Helsinki reuse centre is not yet in English so i recommend that you visit their store in Helsinki and check out what kind of furniture they have available. If you find anything great, you can then rent a van for a few hours to pick up whatever you want to buy. 👍
On the topic of phones and internet connections, I highly recommend picking up a prepaid SIM card at an R-kioski convenience store as soon as you arrive. There is one in the arrivals area at Helsinki airport, and most larger railway stations also have R-kioskis. Mobile phone plans are one of the very few things that are cheaper in Finland than in many other countries. You can get a prepaid SIM for a few euros, and they usually come with a few euros worth of credit to get you started. It will save you a lot of money over using your SIM from your home country. Most convenience stores will also sell prepaid WiFi hotspots with a month of unlimited internet use included, although most student accomodations include an internet connection in the rent so you may not end up needing one.
Thank you Oliver for all your video, I’m now in Helsinki waiting for the semester to start! I’m just wondering where to find the second hand furniture store you talk about. The furniture are indeed expensive as you talk about before and I just want to look for some relatively cheap ones.😅
Hey Lee Lee and thanks so much for sharing this! Wonderful to hear that you have arrived to Helsinki safely. I hope that you have had great first days so far. Here are links to two 2nd hand shops that i can recommend especially when it comes to furniture: ○ Helsinki reuse centre (Kierrätyskeskus in Finnish): www.kierratyskeskus.fi ○ Reuse and rescue: facebook.com/reuseandrescue/ The latter one is actually located at the Aalto university campus in Otaniemi and its highly recommended. Unfortunately the Helsinki reuse centre doesnt have its websites fully in english but i recommend that you first visit their store in Helsinki to check out what they have available. You can then rent a van for cheap for a few hours to pick up what ever it is that you want to buy. Here is a link to a van rental company that ive used every time ive moved myself (again, idiotically, their website is only in Finnish so i recommend that you call their customer service on the webpage that i linked): Pakuovelle: www.pakuovelle.com/asiakaspalvelu/ I hope this gets you started 👍
The summer is very warm for us Finns after being in the cold and dark for 6-8 months but for someone from southern Europe or Asia, for example, the summer here in Finland probably doesn't bother them that much. Winter is a whole different situation though. :D
Oh you are absolutely correct. In fact, what is super interesting is that during the last 5ish years, we have had an influx of European tourists who are coming here during the summer because of the mild weather. On the other hand, a lot of the Chinese tourists in Finland have come here over the years because of the clean air and nature. So its pretty interesting that while we do not have pyramids or Eiffel towers, we get a lot of people coming here because of the "mild" climate 👌
Tip for the photos: if Finland your photos must be as fresh as possible or 6 months old max. If you take old photos that were made in your country make sure they don't have dates on them. If you still look like yourself there should be no problem when you apply old photos for whenere Finnish documents (ID or student resident permit). Another story is when you take a photo in Finnish salons where they give you the digital number that won't let you using these photo 6 months after it was made. You don't want to pay 15-20 euro for a pic each half a year.
Very useful content! I had no idea about 112 Suomi app.- I'd just like to mention that winter clothing in Finland can be a bit expensive, too. So I would suggest to the ones, especially on a budget, to get their winter clothing from their home country, if possible, even if you arrive in September-October 🙂
Thanks for sharing! The winter clothing is a great addition. You should definitely consider buying some in your home country if you can get them a bit cheaper.
Finland is sparsely populated with a population of 5.5 million. just London has more people than Finland, and the U.K. has a population of more than 60 million.
Yep, just think about that for a minute 😅. On the other hand, Germany has a population of 83 million while being geographically pretty much the same size as Finland.
Can you tell me : 1. what are the opportunities in the field Accounts & Finance in Finland ? 2. Is there any value of Chartered Account(CA), Cost Account, who are from asian country ? 2. What are the Lowest & highest salary package in Accounts & Finance field ?
Hey and thanks for these question. Super short answers to each: 1. Great. There are always opportunities in these general business fields in Finland. However, just having a degree is never enough. You need to also be good at what you do. 2. No idea. The accounting standards, rules and laws vary from country to country so my guess is that you cant work as an accountant in Finland unless they have an international finance team dealing with their global accounts. Again, this is just my guess because i have not looked into this in-depth. 3. There are no such lists that i could cite. Finland does not have a minimum salary so the salaries are depend on your field, the job, your seniority, the company hiring, your educational background as well as your previous experience. However, as a general rule of thumb, the financial sector as well as management consultancy offer very high salaries. However, these are also highly competitive sectors so you need to do extremely well in school as well as in your early career to get an opportunity here. I hope these answers give you some context 👍
So great the video! I only have a question. It is well know that there is going to snow a lot during the winter. But what about teh rain in others season? It is necessary an umbrella rigth know? What it is your opinion about that? It would be fantastic if you can help me. Thank you very much
Hey Christian and thanks so much for the question! Yes, it is definitely recommended to have an umbrella for the summer, spring and autumn seasons. While we do not have a quote-on-quote "rainy season", we do still get some rain during the summer and especially during autumn time. So an umbrella is a must. On the other hand, i would also recommend you to have some kind of water proof shoes for each season because your winter shoes are definitely going to be waaaay too hot for the summer and autumn. Also, having some kind of a water proof or water repellent jacket for each season is a good idea. However, this is not 100% necessary if you can protect yourself from rain some other way. I hope this answered your question 👍
Hey Sumod and thanks so much for the great question 👍. Oh hell yes, Finnish employers will absolutely take your previous experience into consideration 😅. Would be a rather dumb recruiter if they discounted work experience because it was accumulated in another country.
I heard from some of my friends who are currently staying at finland as a student that currently they are facing job crisis. Not only they but also other international students are facing too. Is it true?
