Extremely slick work! I keep finding myself drawn to the Sons of Horus, sure they probably ended the Heresy the absolute worst off of all of the Traitor Legions but their style and look is unparalleled. Love the brutal bronze-age warlord fit.
You just nailed it! Can't wait to see the whole army painted 😀
I will finish this one!
@@cultofpaint hows it going?
I love that you went for the oldschool, desaturated SOH paintsheme, instead of the newer, vivid one!
This is hands down the absolute best take on the SoH colour scheme. Lovely weathering. It's not overdone in the slightest. I will be unashamedly straight up copying your work for my own army. Just wanted to say fantastic work and a sincere thank you for posting this up. Cheers!
Haven't even seen the video yet, but the end result looks amazing!
I like the color scheme the Sons of Horus had back then, and you did one heck of a job replacating it.
11:00 If you mix a mica flake based metallic paint (such as scale 75 thrash metal) with Vallejo Duraluminum and a dash of ink you can make a metallic paint that flows like contrast paint and covers literally anything. Two steps in one.
Stunning. Your SOH stuff has been a massive inspiration to my own SOH army.
Thanks! Looking forward to sharing the progress.
Amazing, my main inspiration for my SoH is your Contemptor. This hammers it home!!!
One of the coolest schemes I’ve seen. I’ll be using this for my Tomb Kings shields with the bone tutorial from the underworlds terrain
Gorgeous. Every new HH legion video makes me want to switch legions
I think this is the perfect green for Sons of Horus, its the right pale sea green. Most SoH, including the ones GW use in their promo materials use a too vibrant almost turquoise green, at least for my tastes.
Nice Job!
SoH have one of the most unique schemes in 40k, and I think the fiddlyness of getting that green just right makes them one of the more challenging armies to paint. They're possibly the only space marines I would argue that need an airbrush. One thing that is good about them having their color though is that you can get a wide variety of interpretations. Some people like the light seafoam, some people like the vibrant turquoise, and I myself like using SoH green, Sybarite, gauss blaster, and coelia green for an almost deep-jade like color.
As long as the SoH are some brand of off-green and black with plenty of shading
they always look striking.
I've been fighting which hues to use.... soh green, lupercal green, etc etc.. so this looks good, cant wait.
My absolute favourite so far! You really hit the colour from the artwork spot on!
I really look forward to more :)
I think some of these techniques I will try to transfer to a more matte and dark but still metallic Alpha Legion.
I’d love to see more.
Great video Andy you captured the artwork the look the colour really well.
Oof this is so good.. I love this green! Thanks for sharing such an in-depth tutorial.
I just tuned into this and it looks great. So far
Absolutely brilliant mate! Gotta say the best Sons of Horus army paintjob approach I've seen since the release of the box set.
Absolutely beautiful work
Been waiting for this one! Now for a fresh cuppa and 20 minutes of hobby wholesomeness.
Loving this series! I'd love to see you paint up Horus Horus himself in this scheme...
looking at the process and the finished piece, i've got to say im warming up to these MK6 models
Edit: Its late, my mind's all over the place...love the paintscheme and value the sharing of how you managed to make it.
Best looking SoH army incoming!
Let's go! I've been waiting for this!
I've been replicating the Contemptor tutorial for my troops for a few weeks now and the results have been really close to these ones, although I've opted with an all over oil wash and cleaning the excess with white spirits instead of the more selective shading. I might reconsider that because the higher contrast is really nice in your work after all.
My biggest problem lies with the basing at the moment. For the models I've finished I've made a dark brown dirt ground base but I'm not quite feeling it. The idea was for it to allow for some real nice weathering for the bigger models with dried and wet mud effects but it doesn't look that good on the infantry I'm afraid.
Really inspiring videos. Have finally helped me decide to get an airbrush and going to try and put your salamander vid to good use. Thanks for all the help seriously.
Been holding out on starting my SOH army in the hope you'd drop an army painting video on them. Well, now I got some painting to do
This is ace Andy, bravo! Gonna bust out the airbrush and give it a try, love the mixing up of the armour marks for SoH. Getting that mismatched look to the armour to portray that Cthonian gang look is really important for me and great to see it exemplified here!
Amazing colours! Because of this video, I started a Sons of Horus army. From what kit are the studded helmets? I love the look of them.
Up
I think the helmet is a modified blood angels maximus helmet but I'm not sure. Id like to know as well.
I believe I found it. It looks almost identical to the Sons of Horus Praetor head but with the mouth bits filled in. It's a complete match otherwise and he could have filled in the divots.
The studded ones are resin mark 5. I bought mark 5 for this project, but felt they were too small. Thought I might as well use the heads though.
Props on the Regina Blitz mate. In other news I recently, successfully used my airbrush to alter some highlights I wasn't happy with and it worked a treat.
That looks so awesome! Makes mewant to start a SOH army all my own
amazing!! are all of those helmets official? if not, where did you get them?
you ever find where their from?
@@sanguinius6815 It's the 'Sons of Horus - Legion Praetor' helmet with the gaps filled up.
Don’t like the official helmet design….this design looks way better.. alot more intimidating..
To be honest, I wasn't expecting the SoH tutorial, since you already provided the Contemptor dreadnought (a true work of art, especially the eye lenses), but thank you for this awesome video.
As always, the oil/pin wash, combined with the weathering effect, works so much better than the popular edge highlights. You truly nailed this colour scheme, like most of the other legions (giving the Dark Angels, Iron Hands and Raven Guard their own identity, while remaining close to their official look, was no small task). The only detail that I think you missed, on this SoH legionnaire, is the bolter clip/magazine, which should have been painted with Iron Warriors, like the rest of the silver parts.
I don't know if you plan on painting more characters/primarchs on your Patreon (well, Horus would be a no-brainer for your army), but I can't wait to discover your amazing tutorials over there!
Thank you very much and keep up the great work!
In the most respectful way possible. I'm stealing this scheme
Excellent work, I really like how they look a bit grimy and battle worn, no shiny bois there!!
Fantastic looking army, even in its #wip stage... The variety in armor styles gives it a very "realistic" feel!
Andy is the Goat
Honestly these look phenomenal, you have perfectly captured the tone of the book art. really great take Andy I'd happily watch you paint up horus heresy miniatures for the rest of the year 👍
If you had to choose a loyalist legion to do who would you pic?
your tutorials are the absolute best and easiest to follow and made me a better and more satisfied painter!! one question, do you magnetize the bases?
Really want to see your take on the leviathan dreadnought. I loved Richard Grey’s take but always love your style.
Could you please do a tutorial for your world eaters! You're Dred just looks so awsome it actually made me want to try to start a World Eaters army myself
Full dred tutorial over on Patreon
Really nice sons of Horus I was tempted by them,Im currently painting dark angels for 30k then after they are done it's the word bearers.
Best video on the subject
Looks fantastic! I already want to betray someone))
Btw, they look so much cooler without those silly beaks!
looks fantastic man!
Nice tutorial Andy as always
FOR THE WAR MASTER
Thanks!
Have you thought about making a video showing how to paint these without an airbrush?
Hey man great work + tutorial. Can I ask where you got the helmet from in the thumbnail? I’ve seen it before but can’t remember where!
It's from the Forgeworld Praetor!
@@cultofpaint ah knew I’d seen it somewhere before! Thanks for taking the time to reply. I just discovered your tutorials recently and I absolutely love them - your models, colour schemes, techniques and teaching style.. it’s all A++ content and easily one of the best painting resources out there. Keep up the fantastic work!
Pre-emptive like click, thumbs up, great job
Also, you might like to check out some of the third party helmets you can get. I got an amazing pack which has the top knots on and a sort of gladiator style face plate. Look badass.
Beautiful paintjob, as always, makes me want to start a small detachment to acompany my main battleforce. Can't wait for the Word Bearers tutorial! Also are you going for a metallic red paintjob for the WB?
I think the power armor colour looks better without the oil wash but just my opinion, good video either way.
please do a tutorial horus heresy alpha legion - blue and silver colour plate pleaseeee - these tutorials are so awesome.
For those using artist colors what hex codes, roughly, correspond to the colors you’ve used for the green? The most common criticism anyone has for folks painting XVIth Legion, it’s the green. Great video as always, thank you.
Great work! Perhaps you could complete a squad, instead of waiting to finish all the black first?
I actually love mixing my own paints. Prefer mixing single pigment though. Handy to have plenty of empty droppers on hand.
I'd be happy just finishing one marine to that standard in my life time....
Great look mate. Do you gloss varnish before the oil wash and then matte after?
Fantastic job. After the oil washes do you do another varnish?
Where do you get all these cool helmets
Somebody already asked but I NEED to know where that helmet comes from
just relaying the info I saw someone comment. it's the son of horus preator head with the face mask details filled and smoothed
this also doubles as a True Sons warband!
Amazing ! There is a lot of MKV helmets in your army, where did you find them ? :)
I would guess etsy or thingiverse.
Amazing toturial, really happy. Just a bit curious.. where does the helmet comes from?
Pretty sure it's the SOH Praetor but with the faceplate detail filled in.
@@TheDrouyn wish id scrolled down instead of googling a bunch of heads but i totally agree this must be it!
this is awesome! i cant wait to try this out any chance of doing an executioner space marine there isnt that many how to paint them on youtube
It is a very interesting color. And an excellent job. That is very high quality painting skills.
I'm picky with what colours look good for sons of Horus but these look great
Nice tutorial. But where can we get that head from the chap in the thumbnail? 😁
Great guide. I can’t fathom how it takes half an hour to film the black? How many coats is that?
That helmet is phenomenal! Where'd you nab it?
I believe its the Sons of Horus - Legion Praetor helmet with parts of it filled in.
Where did the smooth faced helmet come from?
yo tambien quiero saberlo!! Gracias
It's the 'Sons of Horus - Legion Praetor' helmet with the gaps filled up.
Great work but how did you get the Mk5 space marine helmets since I only have the kits for MK3, MK4 and Mk6 kits?
What helmet was used for the model you have as an example when painting the oil wash and chips? Love the progress. Lookingofrwrad to more
Do you have a rough idea of the ratio for the Sons of Horus to Green Sky? This scheme is perfect but I'm having a rough time trying to get the mixture right. As always, great painting!
Hello, love your scheme, would preshade with black - gray - white, and than diluted mixture of SoH green and green sky work as well? Or is the black too dark for the mixture and it wont show?
Once again thanks for the great tutorial, I will definitely give it a shot.
Lupercal!
Jan
Beautiful work man. I’m doing possibly the least great legion (night lords). I am going to be using some colorshift paint for the base and some signal red from Vallejo for the lightning. Any thoughts on how to weather colorshift?
Does anyone know where that head comes from? Is it the SoH Praetor head filled in with greenstuff or is it a 3D print? It's so good.
Really nice green. Did you do a gloss coat before the oil wash? Or does it just flow like that naturally? I haven't used oils yet but plan to try them after seeing this
Beautiful stuff, for the oil wash, did you apply the layer over everything and just let it dry or did you have to remove any? New to oil washes ✌️
What psi did you have your compressor at to get spray that accurate at that close?
Ps. Very beautiful scheme! Thanks for the inspiration!
Could I ask a question do you add air brush thinner into the sons of Horus and green sky mixture in the mixing pot or when u use it after out of the pot also can you use the mixed pot with thinner to paint with on the pallet?
Where did you get the helmets from? They look cool!
Sons of Horus praetor
Did you varnish before or after the oil paint step? Many thanks. Beautiful colour.
Do you have any tips for getting a scheme looking consistent across an army for a big project over a longer period? I tend not to be able to match units, particularly on my blood angels and now my Sons of Horus. This happens even when I’m using a single base colour and a single highlight with no paint mixing.
Can you build the new plastic contemptor with two close combat claws??
What did you use to keep the sand and concrete pieces to stick to the base?
These look amazing! What helmet is the main showcased one? Looks like it doesn't have the grill that the other Mark IV's have? If you dont mind me asking love the look of that.
Pretty sure it's the SOH Praetor but with the faceplate detail filled in.
@@TheDrouyn tyvm ^^
awesome work, what head is it on the main tutorial marine? cheers
currently i'm copying your recipe, but i keep having problems with the decals, do you have a video on how to apply your decals?
So go ahead and eye ball the mix ratios till you think it looks good??
What’s your setup and needle size. Psi? If you don’t mind sharing
What head did you use for the guy in the thumbnail?
Awesome. Love the bases, do you have a tutorial for that?
17:26
@@ecMonify yep, noticed when I got to the end of the video🤣
From where is the helmet of the son of horus in the thumbnail?
Do you remember, maybe? @cultofpaint
Sons of Horus praetor
Where can I get the top knots bits to customize my army?
List of all the paints you used?
Where did u get the sons of horus marine head u did the chipping on? Been trying to find that head style
Sons of Horus praetor
Anyone know where to buy those metal mixing dishes? My local art store doesn't seem to sell.
where is that helmet from?
