the last time i spent time with my dear grandmother, right before she passed on to heaven, we sat together and listened to Roy Orbison live, together. somehow this beautiful cover brings me back to those moments, more so than hearing the original, somehow....what a stunning and thoughtful interpretation; you are truly a treasure to the world of music
i haven't practice guitar like i used to, for almost a decade.Due to mental health issues and traumatic experiences. This guy makes me wanna pick up the guitar again .And that i have nothing to prove but play, arrange and compose without caring about other's opinion or what others will like .Ill do what i love ❤
Julian has unlocked musical pathways that I once thought were impossible, especially on the guitar. Thank you Julian for completely reinventing what it means to be a guitar player. This man’s playing and artistry has changed my life.
Julian Lage is already one of the greatest guitarists in the history of jazz. A breath of fresh air that we really needed. He has the same approach to the guitar that Bill Evans had to the piano. In him talent, technique and musical sensitivity come together perfectly.
@@eleonorepoppy6904 certainly, Kurt is a master and I love his stuff, I'm not saying anything in absolute terms, what is the point on comparing two masters, they are just different. However... there is something about the way Julian plays the guitar, in a clean, articulate and beautiful way that I've never seen before
if you know Lage's playing you know he has the chops to totally shred this or any song. But he is an artist first and foremost and he choose to remain within the emotional and structural context of the song. I admire that choice greatly.
@@wayzUX I think you're missing the point. If he were flying all over the fingerboard he'd probably get more attention because that's what many people respond to these days. It's admirable that he doesn't take that route even though it might, in some ways, benefit him. That said, I don't think it's in his nature to be anything but genuine.
Dennis Godshalk -- Haha - Good one. _That_ is the element of Lage's music that sort of defies description. If a 9-year-old were given the musicianship of Django, or Bill Evans... Like "Peter Pan plays his magic guitar." It's not about raw chops, which is how some of these commenters seem to gauge music, but it's about the *effect* of the music* ....
@@belascialoja4812 Totally agree man. Although the virtuosity of his playing, for me, is less in the (amazing) fast passages, but more his control of the instrument. Very few have that kind of control, it's really inspiring to see!
I just seen them perform live (Madrid). I can’t believe how above earth they are, like they literally belong to music heaven... and I’m a sucker for rock and electronica. I feel like I just seen Mozart, Bach and Liszt... I’m speechless. My standards have been smashed, blown, disintegrated. PD: he played the Telecaster
Dayum son, you don't just cover Roy Orbison. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY has ever covered an Orbison song like this! Whew! This leaves me breathless. Absolutely incredible!
The second coming of Bill Frisell...we’re in good - no, awesome - hands going forward!!! Great video work, simple in its sophistication and powerfully captures the music being played-
Justin Garcia Bill Frisell brought (and continues to bring!) a huge groundswell of innovation to music globally and to the guitar specifically. Julian is now doing the same. An entire NEW WAVE of innovation on both fronts. A worthy and true successor to Bill going far into the future. Does that help?
The visual effects are nice but I've never seen anything more beautiful than the grace of Mr. Lage's technique. Still, it's all in service to Art, and even guitarists need relax and enjoy, sometimes.
This song reminds me my big depressions which I have for one year. When something bad happens to me, I'm telling myself what I have survived and I feel like: "Yeah, compared to depressions, I will get throw it."
Julian Lage is taking off where we left behind when Gabor Szabo died 35+ years ago ... It is great to see that someone tries the explore new, expressive and distinct forms for Jazz guitar playing (like Gabor Szabo did 50+ years ago). Very impressive.
when i listen to julian's lines, I image their resolvement, the way the might continue and quite frankly, julian plays that exact part i hear most of the time
Everyone is talking about the genius of how he composed the music which I can’t deny, but in my opinion Julian lage has the best music for any occasion
Crying is so sweet and tragic at the same time, when we feel down.. This song turn me into that mood.. The "altera pars" is always deaf, dumb and blind.. But I am poetry, anyway.. Like this melody.. Let flow.. With Love.. ❤️💚💙💛
Julian è il chitarrista che ha assimilato più di ogni altro la lezione di Jim Hall. Poche note, ma quelle assolutamente "giuste", non è per tutti riuscire a suonare in questo modo. Grande, grande, grande!
I saw him play in Vermont when he was 13 years old. I was blown away then and he just keeps getting better. He has no limitations in his playing skills. Acoustic, electric, whatever. I hope I have the opportunity to see him play again sometime!
DAVE KING! had the pleasure of seeing him with Julian in Lexington at a secret show kinda thing. It was amazing and terrifying all at the same time. My brother lent Dave his set for the night. Talk about two artists.

You ever heard of george benson?
Great comment
Ryan Nicolai hey dude, kick fucking rocks
great comments! totally agree

Hello, this is the first time I listen to Julian. I'm getting here by mistake. Probably, the best mistake of my life!
Check Persian rug, and nocturnal, these are my favorites of him.
u bet
You were damn lucky!
Julian Lage is the kinda guitarist that if he were to play in Royal Albert Hall alone, it would be a great show!
Julian does it again. He's truly the best guitar player of our generation.
I totally agree, his touch to the guitar is equally beautiful as it's unique
Kurt Rosenwinkel has a very interesting approach of music too, in my opinion. Music is not a sport so... Peace; Love.
@@eleonorepoppy6904 certainly, Kurt is a master and I love his stuff, I'm not saying anything in absolute terms, what is the point on comparing two masters, they are just different. Antonio Crevani that kind of describes one of my favorite younger guitarists, Gilad Hekselman. Worth a listen for sure.
Isaiah sharkey, Jairus Mozee, Mansur brown, you need to calm down its not a sport for real
Holy shit, this is one of the most beautiful things I have heard so far in my young life
if you know Lage's playing you know he has the chops to totally shred this or any song. But he is an artist first and foremost and he choose to remain within the emotional and structural context of the song. I admire that choice greatly.
Amen!!
You are absolutely right! In this song, all of his energy is channeled into emphasizing the melody.
Why does everyone feel the need to justify the lack of shredding in good guitar songs? I suppose if he couldn't shred, you'd consider this song trash?

You could say...he did it his way.
Get it? Like the song I Did It My Way made popular by Frank Sinatra.
I want to be as good a player as Julian when I grow young...
Dennis Godshalk me too. And Im 40!

he started at 5 and at 13 already knew many jazz standards
Practice, constancy, heart and soul.
I will not give up. I will not give up.
This will inspire me to practice, and learn more.
I've been playing like a mad man the past couple months, and it began right after discovering Julian and obsessing over Modern Lore
:v just dont stop
learning his etudes is not a bad idea for a start
Its great that guys like him are expanding the jazz idiom to songs we actually like.
@Ryan Nicolai You're so right. Absolutely essential listening, from the early days to the present... B Frisell is a truly phenomenal guitarist!
Playing for the sake of the song and not his ego- The mark of a true musician🙏

the best guitar trio on the planet right now
I'm running out of superlatives where Julian's artistry is concerned.
@Ryan Nicolai Uh ... no. If you think so, you may need to delve more deeply into the work of each player to become better acquainted.
+Ryan Nicolai: Nah! Listen to more from each.
I think so !
Channeled Roy Orbison , wow what a gift!
DAVE KING ON DRUUUUUUUUUMS!
Dave brought me here!
Dave finally got a straight job? LOL I would love to hear Lage play some of Dave's compositions! Huge Happy Apple fan here.
The second coming of Bill Frisell...we’re in good - no, awesome - hands going forward!!! Great video work, simple in its sophistication and powerfully captures the music being played-
A lot of Jim Campilongo vibe too, beautiful work
Ryan Nicolai I’m sorry but I’m doing absolutely NO SUCH THING.
Ryan Nicolai imo they are very different. There is certainly inspiration but their respective approaches are not that alike
Exactly what I thought, very much in the style Bill Frisell.
I must've watched this a thousand times already
Nels Cline inspired me to get a Jazzmaster, Julian sold me on a Telecaster. Please don't make me buy a Gretsch now!
My thoughts EXACTLY.
It's not the guitar it's the player.
You're doing it wrong, after watching all that you're supposed to sell your guitars, not buy more.
@@bassheadjazz2708 hahahaha
@Kaushik Kurudi Or you have too little.
Ooh, that harmonic was bliss
the control is just my fav thing man and I want to say thank you for the feels
The perfect guitar tone has been achieved! Not to mention the impeccable styling. True genius.
There is still hope in music! I ve been disoriented, bored and disillusioned with recent guitar music scene, but Julian made me excited again..
Nice, brilliant guitar work. Chrd phrasing as well as melodic tones.
Like Butter.
Wow!! The accompaniment of the lights and camera movement beautiful!! Looove the playing!! Come to Mexico City please.

It has those Jim Campilongo tones/vibes… love it… everything is right where it supposed to be 👍
Such beautiful musicianship. Talk about being in the moment. Satori for 5:31.
This is someone that truly understands their instrument. Holy shit. I can't watfh this enough.

the dynamics in his hands are unreal
I´ve been listening to this track for ages.... such an amazing/inspiring cover and performance.
I saw Julian live last saturday, no words, brilliant! currently one of the best guitarists
Everyone is talking about the genius of how he composed the music which I can’t deny, but in my opinion Julian lage has the best music for any occasion
I had the pleasure of seeing him last year with Eric Doob and Jorge. He's one of the most inspiring young musicians out there today.
Dave King on drums!
AqueousMantra and that’s how you get the gig

That's what you call DYNAMICS!
Well done Julian. You sounded brilliant with your arrangement stripped down and clean. Have a beautiful afternoon, Julian PH.
Anyone who's heard Mayer's take on Magnolia by J.J Cale will instantly recognize the notes played in the beginning.
Beautiful.
My first thoughts! Such a good take on J.J. Cale's tune
You should totally give your trios different names. Each incarnation is great and each is unique.
Such great feel combined with technique....
When ya need to mellow out, just listen to this dude.
01:35 is a sign of someone who is in complete control of what they're doing. Just beautiful.
I didn't know of Julian Lage till two years ago, at his concert in Italy. His music gave me big emotions. I love him.
That guitar really sing! awesome…
It's even better than the telecaster !
Thank you for this wonderful song!
this speaks more than words could
Wow, this is a beautiful version of this song. Well done Julian and crew. Roy would be proud I'm sure.
Love the tune, the Gretsch and Mr. Dave King!! Fantastique!

El Mejor en estos tiempos por Lejos ! Abrazos desde Argentina
Yeah, I'm crying during listening
Wow, this is such a beautiful, heartbreaking version of a classic, heartbreaking song by the late, great Roy Orbison! 👍🏼🙂
Your timing and subtleness is exquisite Julian.
Buttery smooth sound. Tastes like heaven.
He just loves music!
Watched this after the interview with Josh Smith...been following him for a week....what a player!

Yeeeessss keep the country stuff coming man
So so so good❤❤
The fantastic Julian Lage, definitely hear Bill Frisel influence here. Understatement playing. Love it.
This is my favorite song
absolutely stunning ...I am hooked...

One of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. Bravo Julian, cheers from Brazil!
Beautiful progression and harmonies, worthy of transcribing. So glad Julian was born.
Perfect!
That was a journey to try and play along with....wow
Wow. I love it!
Simply beautiful, hits right into the heart.
I just can't even with this... wow. Resplendent.
The legendary Lage firing on all cylinders.
