  • We died of love when Mr. Bates said "I have never been prouder not loved you more than I love you now at this moment." This scene, this moment, is an example that love and respect go hand in hand. Because respect is earned from trust, and love is earned from respect.
From season 4 episode 5: Sarah Bunting continues to cause waves above stairs but this time she may have gone too far; on returning to Downton, Thomas is suffering an inexplicable illness, and Baxter suspects there's more to it than he's letting on.

As someone who is a survivor of sexual assault, seeing Bates be so supportive of Anna and not blaming her, telling her she's not spoiled, hit me so hard I broke down and sobbed for a at least an hour. Anna and Bates had one of the most beautiful and tragic story arcs. I remember when I first saw this scene; it nearly broke me. Bates' reaction and what he said to Anna was so poignant. The moment Bates admits he suspects Green, and listening to Anna's vehement denials shows Bates he was right. Especially when episodes later Green admits to coming downstairs during the concert (while everybody else was upstairs). Joanne did such a great job. I just wish Anna didn't lie to Bates about who her rapist was, even though she feared that Bates would kill him. Given his icy statement of "he's a dead man" she had every reason to come to that conclusion.

Anna: the trembling of her lips, the shaking of her spoken words, the gazes of her eyes, the pure of her soul's love and lovely lovely hands.
on the other hands Mr Bates: the sufferer who understands suffering and accepts dealing with it's results and he loves her more because that show how she hold fighting within her ownself.

The pain in Mr Bates' eyes when he asks her "why wouldn't you tell me?". He is full of different emotions: he is heartbroken for his wife, feeling angry and in the wrong that he couldnt protect her at the time, hurt because of her keeping her distance since the attack, but what hurts him so is that she felt she couldn't tell him. You can see all the raw emotion there in both of them.

This is a wonderful example of how to handle support after a sexual assualt. The words he's giving her is to make her recognise she's suffered something beyond terrible but at the same time he's also making her realise how intensely strong she is to still keep going albeit with pain. It's to make her recognise she should be kinder to herself and that it was in no way her fault.

I know the scene highlights Bates love for Anna, but what is strong and lovely of them both is the extent of their sacrifice for each other and how willing they are to put themselves on second place when it comes to love. Anna had endured the whole matter just to avoid suffering for her husband. Really moving, she chose to take the burden alone just to spare Bates from the emotional distress the news would give him. The disgust with yourself thinking your tainted or you somehow brought this on, this is a beautiful portrait of what it feels like on both sides. I'm an absolute Downton addict. And of all the couples in this series John and Anna is my absolute favorite. One thing about this 2 is that they never lost faith in one another. No matter what happened. They had things going one all the time. Bates getting arrested for Vera's death and sentenced to death. His incarceration and Anna's own arrest for the death of Green. At time it seems that they just never could catch a break. But they stick together through it all. I'm glad that they got their happily ever after eventually with the birth of their son. But I have to give credit to Joanne and Brendan for superb acting. They had real chemistry. Love this couple.

This makes me so sad for both Anna and Mr Bates!! They both didn't deserve this at all!! I can't imagine the pain the real victims of sexual abuse, but it makes me mad and sad, when a man abuses a woman.

I think he knew it was Mr. Greene the moment he suspected something bad happened to her. He’s just too much of a gentleman to press the issue...

I wish all the people that are so insensitive to sexual abuse could see this. Maybe it would help a little to show them the pain we've been through.

That's the way a man is supposed to treat a woman who has been victimized by sexual assault. And it's TRUTH. Women are made higher by their suffering. In a way that words cannot do justice to.

Wow I'll never forget when I first saw this scene oh I understand the language very well the Anna thought she was damaged it will be cast aside like trash but Mr Bates didn't see that the scene was beautiful simplisick convey his love for her that ran Beyond social class and rules beyond comprehension and no blame beyond what happened to her just simply blissful

There is absolutely no need to associate your identity with such concepts as "generation z trash" - by what command should you limit your awareness with such trite labels?

Bates threatens to kill the man even after he was on trial and in prison for murder earlier in the series. How would it help Anna for him to be hanged for murder? And, as an aside, doesn't it seem like Anna is in tears almost every episode?
