This Pokemon Direct reveals new news about Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. They announce being able to ride Miraidon and Koraidon to traverse the Paldea region. There are new Pokemon like Cetitan and Fidough along with Paldean Wooper. Terastal Pokemon is the new mechanic in these games and can enhance the power of a type or change the type of a pokemon. You meet new characters on your journey as well, like Nemona, Professors Sada and Turo, Jacq, Clavell, Grusha, Arven, and Penny.

If you made that up honestly hats off. Thats so witty. Ill definitely nickname it that once I inevitably get Scarlet if it isnt the canon name. Lol

Actually, now that I say it, I hope it gets Swords Dance and Baton Pass, so that we could go further:

From what I'm understanding of the tera types, it has two intended uses:
-If your tera type matches one of your original types, you get "super STAB" basically
-If your tera type doesn't match, you change your weaknesses and get STAB for the new type
It looks like the verbiage around "change" means you'll become monotype in either situation?
It looked to me like you’d lose your secondary typing too. If that’s the case it’s definitely a defensive option

For dual types, I think it's just gonna be the secondary type that changes into its tera form. So it'll still have the bug type. Or maybe not idk we won't know until it comes out
💀
@@Sheenifier then what would the pokemon with secondary typings have? A third type?
@@lance8720 well that's what I mean. So let's say shedinja is Bug/Ghost and then has an Elec tera type so if would terastallize into a Elec/Ghost keeping the secondary ghost typing. That's my theory for dual types, but the popular interpretation is it loses both at least defensively.
@@Sheenifier idk, crystals are supposed to be pure. so lore wise it makes sense to become mono
It's a shame to see OP pokemon like Leafeon returning that will probably ruin the competitive metagame since Leafeon is one of the strongest grass types ever. According to the website, all Pokémon have access to the 18 different types when terrastalyzing. This doesn’t mean they get a wider move pool, as per stated on the website it could be used to get a buff on a move or just to change the type of the Pokémon. So this means it could very well be both an offensive and defensive mechanic.
As an example for defensively, Azumarill can’t learn any fire moves, but can have a fire Tera type to negate a grass type weakness.
As an example for offense, let’s take Azumarill again. Azumarill can learn grass knot. You can have it’s Tera type be grass to get a boost on that move. Similarly with giving it water and fairy Tera types!

I wonder if a Hidden Power-like Move could be introduced? It could be linked to Tera Types in a way to avoid being confusing to new players, so Tera Type: Fire = Hidden Power: Fire. You want a Roserade with HP Fire? Then you need to get a Tera Type: Fire Roserade. This would also allow the existence of HP Normal and Fairy, since it'd be linked to the Tera Type.
With this addition, every Pokemon would have at least 1 STAB option with any Tera type, without needing to give any Pokemon any new moves on a Pokemon to Pokemon basis.
Tera blast?
Terastalize is like Hidden Power in a way.
It combines the Gem mechanic from Gen 5, and acts as Protean/Libero+adaptibility if the pokemon has the same Tera type as one of it's OG types.
If the Tera type matches one of the pokemon's original typing, the moves gets as strong as if it had adaptibility. But if the pokemon has a different tera type, it could change into that type (works like protean/libero) to resist other types.
Example would be Lucario with a Tera Steel Type
Bullet punch would get boosted from the Tera type, and boosted again as if it was adaptibility, While also Changing Lucario to pure Steel.
Then you have things like PIkachu with a possible Flying Tera type, and using it would make it gain immunity to ground type moves. AND it powers up Fly.
Aside from this one thing I want, is A LARGER TIMER IN BATTLES. especially with animations like this. also I hope they can tone down the brightness ALOT, seizure warnings incoming much?
Very helpful information
Imagine if shedinja was in the game, electric tera type with air balloon
Does it make them single-type or does it add the tera type? The pokemon website says it adds types but everyone talks like it changes into mono, so I'm slightly confused
@@yadielrosado8012 it would just be sand meta all over again.
@@menderbug1 They mentioned resistances, so possibly they become Mono type when they Terastallize.
again perfect example would be like Lucario with something like a steel Tera type. if it Terastallizes, it would become pure Steel type, and any steel move it uses while in that state, become stronger (like Gen 5 gems) but if one of it's Original Types matched the Tera type (Steel Tera type matches it's Steel half) then the steel moves get even stronger (like adaptibility)
It looks like the Terastelize change turns the Pokémon into a single typing. I’m assuming the trade off is stronger moves and possible new type at the cost of losing their dual typing.
if Weavile is in the game he's gonna be so broken
This probably means you’ll use it for Pokémon that will do well woah just a single typing than it’s dual.
I'm just curious as to how Protean works with Terastelizing
@@gustavoschiller6852 Imagine a steel typed weavile. All those resistances and the speed
@@kreatona4219 probably won't be in the game
Every single stream's reaction to Red and Mewtwo being Masters and Cafe was SO funny LMAO
Ground/Poison is a great typing, no? Hits everything at least neutral, 7 effective (Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire, Grass, Electric, Fairy). Only 4 Weaknesses (Ground, Water, Psychic, Ice (3 with Water Absorb)), 4 resistances (Fighting, Rock, Bug, Fairy), a double resistance (Poison) and an immunity (Electric).
I mean it's a good typing,
But great is pushing it.
A weakness to Ground is bad,
Resistance to Poison and Bug are insignificant
And being weak to ice means water types still beat it.
@@BramLastname I'm wondering if the new evolution will be more offensive and maybe faster, because clearly it has the typing for an offensive pokemon rather than a defensive one like Quag. Keep in mind that typings that have a lot of weaknesses like Ground/Ice can still be devastating offensively.
@@greyscaleadaven it definitely could work,
But to say that changing a water/Ground type to poison/ground is an improvement is ignoring the facts.
Water/Ground has 1 uncommon type to watch out for,
Poison/Ground is weak to 4 of the most common types in competitive pokemon.
While offensively Poison/Ground deals better with Grass types,
This doesn't justify the amount of defensive losses.
Not to say I dislike Poison/Ground as a typing,
It's just not nearly as good as other Poison or Ground dual typings.
@@BramLastname I'll just say I agree, Water ground is a practically unbeatable typing defensively. Unaware as an ability is something the regular Quag will also hold over this evo, but I don't think this one will be too much worse if they build it in a more offensive way. They'll just have different strengths. Keep in mind that Ground/Poison hits everything neutrally or supereffective unlike Water/Ground (outside of niche cases like Bronzong of course), has no 4x weaknesses, and is strong against fairies which is a fairly valuable trait. Also, it gets water absorb which cancels out one of the more problematic typings it's weak to, water. I do get the point about most water types running ice coverage though. Nobody can know for sure I guess bc we haven't seen the potential evolution's stats or movepool. I would say the biggest kicker for this wooper variant is not having Unaware as an ability, the only thing that gives Quag any kind of viability in competitive. Though Poison Point is cool thematically it won't do as well competitively.
@@greyscaleadaven exactly,
As much as I'd want this pokemon to be good,
It looks like it's gonna be an offensive mon,
Meaning it'll likely see experimentation,
But a lot has to go right for this to become competitively viable.
As hitting fairies is good, but there's a lot of competition that's already proven to work well with other pokemon.
Announcer: Terastallize your Pokémon to increase their power
Me: Terastallize to give Pokémon funny hats 🤣
If Nemona is tied to the Gym Challenge plot, are Arven and Penny the rivals in the other if the “three stories”? Maybe the fact that Arven is a good cook but is bad at battle has to do with his plot being focused on other game mechanics?
and Penny is related to the main story/evil teams somehow?
It's very interesting.
@@AquilaPainWhy I’m speculating that maybe she got caught up in it unwillingly, just like Gladion
That would be awesome!
In all honesty, I like the type change mechanic it’s really cool and for better or for worse will shake up competitive completely
My guess is that not every mon will be able to tera into every type. There will probably be a short list of allowed types per mon. ie. Drifblim can tera as ghost, flying, fire, dark. Might even be limited to types that exist in the mon's learnset.
Normal types with having coverage with every type: *laughs in unpredictability*
I think its like hidden power
Yeah, I hope this is the case, but even if they can tera into any type, most mons won’t have coverage for most types. So it’s really only going to be annoying for like one turn if it terras into something that negates your move.
No, they can Tera into EVERY type and you can PROBABLY change it later on if you want
@@AquilaPainWhy I don't think you can change it on the fly, then the raids would be pointless.. I think you have to seek out the one you want/get lucky.. same way Hidden Power works.. you can't just change it on the fly you have to get lucky and shit
I'm guessing that one thing that might help mitigate the guessing game of your opponent's Tera Types might be that they can only do it for one Pokemon per battle. Since they mention that in-game, you need to recharge once you use it, it'll probably be a one-time use, so you gotta make it count for whatever Pokemon you're gonna Terastalize. Over time, certain Pokemon will probably tend towards specific Tera Types even if they don't tell you what the opposing Tera Types are, which might tamp down on the unknown aspect of it? Sure will be a chaotic beginning, at the very least, which will be fun to watch from my casual perspective.

14:14 Important part begins
"Oh no... They made Hidden Power good" is a world champion quote.
What if, you can use this defensively? Turn Arcanine into a flying type or turn T-tar into a ghost? 🤔
Arcanine would be better ghost type
Yeah, the 3 uses we will probably see are 1. Giving your big sweeper Pokémon double stab, 2. Making your Pokémon with shitty typing a fairy type or dragon type or some other really strong type. And 3. Using it to defensively make Pokémon steel or ghost type to avoid super effective moves.
Obviously you can use it defensively. You can use it for any reason. If you want to use it to give your Pokémon a better defensive typing, you can. If you want to use it for a better offensive typing, you can. But turning Arcanine into a flying type will keep it weak to rock, and pick up a weakness to ice and electric. So it’s always going to be a trade off.

Think running garchomp to counter a steel type, but it now could have hidden power ice. They took out Hidden Power and it comes back 3 years later in a sparkly hat, stronger than ever. I'm both nervous and excited for what Tera-types will do to the competitive scene. It's going to make a much more volitile scene, giving every pokemon the ability to change types is really going to switch things up. I see normal types skyrocketing in usage, finally able to use thier massive movepools. While T-tar suddenly losing its weaknesses is terrifying.
to me, the meta with this will be very anti-ground, ghost, normal, fighting, anything with immunity possibility.
It will be that and the mons that will do it will probably have wide movepools will be on top the pack
The meta has basically always been anti-ground and anti-ghost,
Since ground is the most common offensive move type (mostly because Earthquake)
And Ghost is really good defensively
Especially since it deals with fighting types that threaten your Steel types.
Sounds like every meta ever
This is gonna leave big room for outplays and countermetas. I think it should be fun at first glance. Obviously there are most logical swaps like Ground Gyarados, but you could bait it and play Water Gyarados as an offensive variant.

So let me get this straight: All of the gym leaders have the set teams depending on who the player challenges first? So the weakest gym you take on Scarlet can be the strongest you take on violet? So if the first gym you battle on scarlet has an aron, then the last gym can have a fully evolved aggron on violet? That is actually pretty cool
but the number of pokemon will also be different, like the first gym leader usually has 2 pokemon and the final gym leader has 4-5.
That kind of level matching is something that a lot of good rom hacks do right now, and it’s about time an official game does it
It's unlikely that the gym leaders team will scale with you, as the main site says "You can challenge the strong gym first, or the first you come across" and the leak said so

Also it seems that to use the mechanic you have to recharge the Tera ball after each use on a Pokémon center, so you can’t really spam it on every encounter.
Indeed much like dynamaxing only in specific spots
Imagine all the weather teams being used, as pokemon with fire or water moves can now terrastalize into those types and do crazy damage
My guess is that TERa type adds a third typing. Primary, secondary, TERtiary. The reason you get double STAB is because e.g. you pokemon turns from fire/flying to fire/flying/fire. Thus STAB two times.
But that might be really boring/complicated to do all that math. I feel like it should either make you mono type or change your primary typing.
I think its just turns to one type
It just changes you to a mono type.
I believe it's tera like "tierra" which means earth in Spanish
I'm assuming the naming of terastal is just an amalgamation of 照らす terasu (to shine) and クリスタル kurisutaru (crystal).
Def watched the whole thing before making this comment, great commentary :)
Definitely
I think this has been the most hyped for a mainline Pokémon game I’ve been. Everything looks nice, the dex is looking good (both Pokémonwise and the actual dex interface itself), the gimmick and raids look pretty interesting, and then the free roam is extremely cool.
The Tera Types seem to be a mix between Delta Species and Z-Moves from what I can tell. They can chance the type of a pokemon and the crystalization gives it a boost in that type of power for that move.
Wish megas were back :(
But at least dynamax is banished to the abyss
i hope metagross is in the games
