    ⭐ Jamaica Railway History:
The Jamaican railway system was the first railway opened to traffic outside Europe and North America, and the second British Colony after Canada, only twenty (20) years after operations in the United Kingdom.
Up to the early 1840’s there were no railways in Jamaica, as the Jamaican Government did not have sufficient funds for this venture.
Two English brothers, William and David Smith, asked the Government to allow them to build the railway.
This was to become the first railway in the British West Indies.
They began building the railway in 1844 under the name Railway Company, across the Liguanea Plains, from Kingston to Spanish Town, some 14 miles long.
By late 1845 the railway was completed and was subsequently opened on November 21, 1845 by the Governor, Lord Elgin.
The first engine was called “Projector” and it was run on steam.
People lined the route cheered and waved as the train went by at a slow pace.
“Projector” and “Patriot” were the first railway steam locomotives to be seen in Jamaica.
These pioneer locomotives were followed shortly by others which were named “Emancipation”, “Perseverance”, and “Success.”
From its opening until 1879, the line was operated by the Jamaica Railway Company, owned by the Smith brothers.
The Government bought the railway company in 1879 and additional line were added.
Despite the many lines which had been laid, the north coast of the island had still not been reached.
The Government saw that they would not be able to pay for the laying of the lines across the mountains. Therefore, in 1890, they sold the company to the West Indian Improvement Company.
In 1894, an extension was built from Porus to Montego Bay and in 1896 an extension was through the banana, cacao, citrus and coconut districts of St Catherine, St Mary and Portland was developed from Bog Walk to Port Antonio .
The construction of these lines created a vast drain on the resources of the West Indian Improvement Company and like the Smith Brothers they did not make the success of operating the railway as they had hoped.
In 1898 the shareholders assumed control of the line, finally defaulting to the Government in April 1900, ending the first phase of the railway history under private management
The total route mileage at this stage was almost 185 miles.
Many new lines were laid after the Government took over.
During the World War, various engines were brought in by the U.S. Transportation Corps.
The War also saw the construction of two new lines- a two and a half mile line from Bodles to the U.S naval base at Port Esquivel and a six and a half mile line from Logans Junction, near May Pen to the U.S. Air Base at Fort Simmonds, now called Vernam Fields.
The discovery of bauxite deposits in the 1940s, brought about the relative need to utilized railway as the preferred mode of transporting the bauxite extract to be processed and shipped.
The discovery of bauxite deposits in the 1940s, brought about the relative need to utilized railway as the preferred mode of transporting the bauxite extract to be processed and shipped.
1958 saw the opening of a line from Linstead along the site of the original Ewarton line to Pleasant Farm Alcan Bauxite Works some two miles away from Ewarton.
Special hopper trains ran from there to Port Esquivel via Spanish Town.
At Kirkvine, between Williamsfield and Kendal, a spur line was constructed to the Alcan Kirkvine Alumina Works.
Trains also ran from there to Port Esquivel.
From 1st May 1960, the Fort Simmonds line was closed and uprooted, as the upper three miles of the line had been taken over by Alcan Jamaica Ltd., ... truncated by RUclips (5000 character limit)

I took the train from MoBay to Maggoty in the mid 80's where my uncle picked me up to take me to Longwood, St. Elizabeth. It was magical. I felt like I was in one of those cowboy movies. Jamaica is the most beautiful place in the world, so green and lush. I have always dreamed of successful passenger rail in Jamaica. I am glad to know that I am not alone in that dream. I just hope that real Jamaicans will profit from the railway and not some other group of people who only want to take advantage of and exploit. Peace.

If you think that Jamaicans can profit from the railway, why don't you offer up your time and money to set up and run it? I'm certain that there would be Jamaicans who would take your money, if not your time.
After all, it's right to separate fools from their money, and even Jamaicans know that.

    • @dennisleslie8962
      @dennisleslie8962 3 года назад

@@tiptopsound Fool, it means that railways have proven to be vastly uneconomic all over the world , i.e., they lose money, lots of it, and for that reason have been closed down all over the world.
However, in some countries, short railways are run for tourists and rail fans. Those almost exclusively use steam locomotives that have been restored and maintained for the purpose because the people who patronise them do so to see and experience the steam engines.
Even those do not make a profit and survive on the donations and contributions of money, expertise and labour by supporters of the cause who love steam locomotives.
Listen up, the internet is at your fingertips. Why don't you fools use it to do some research before asking very foolish questions?

Jamaica needs to move further up the value food chain in Bauxite! Why haven’t we been able to attract investors to build an aluminum smelter instead of just selling the raw materials? We should by now doing more than just selling the dirt,we should be smelting and processing and selling finished products for far more money.

The idea is to rip the natural resources out of poor countries dirt dirt cheap by the train load while they save their own as part of their wealth. (modern exploitation, is to pressure governments into signing agreements with multinational companies to rip the guts out of poor countries to service unfair debt repayments)

The problem now is once the Bauxite runs out the smelter would be worthless being on an island. On a bigger continent it would still be competitive to ship product to the plant even if there were no raw materials in the immediate area

The first phase is from linstead to spanish town for school children and the one in mobay. there will be a mini train exhibition downtown where persons can get the experience of riding a train. That will run from downtown to marcus garvey drive behind tinson pen airpaort and back.
i am really excited to see and they should consider refurbishing the lines from down town to spanish town. that would decrease the traffic on the road especially on spanish town road.

If you want to talk about reparations, then this would be a perfect project! .This would be a win win all round!
There are enough trains spotters or train enthusiasts and more importantly expertise in the UK and US to rebuild the railway. You wouldn't have to bother with the Chinese.
Remember nothing is free with the Chinese!
It would bring jobs, tourism plus the fact that the railways is a much greener form of transportation.

I hate saying this but, maybe the Chinese should take control. Look what they're doing to rail in Africa. They've brought 21st century rails to the continent. African modern rail, makes Amtrak look 3rd world.

I think train can play a major influence in the revitalization of rural Jamaica. Places like Porus, Linstead, Williamsfield, and places in Clarendon, St. Bess and other parishes. With Highway 2000 these communities will continue to bypassed. Tourism and the trains can impact these places. It can be money neutral and not likely a overly profitable. Tourists are adventurous and will utilize trains which historically has a nostalgic appeal. Especially, if the stops are marketed to promote history, arts and culture. Unfortunately these are things jamaica does not promote or do well at.

I love to say this Chinese must not take control of anything in Ja. You need to talk about what and how they are taking the resources from Africa. Chinese never do anything unless there is much more in it for
      them.

No, I'm definitely not saying that. Lol.
Just that Ja must NEVER give the Chinese control of anything. You may want to list the countries in which the Chinese have gone and the great job they have done in ripping off their resources.

@@elizabethhall1527 I hear your concern and the emotional feelings attached. The fact is any smart investor has one agenda and it's to turn a profit. Th devil is in the details. We have resources that we can use to better position ourselves as a small island. When we utilize our resources then we bring something of worth to the negotiation table, then we can say to the Chinese investor - let's do this deal but this is what I have done. I am no chump or puppet. What are some untapped resources in Jamaica? We let the churches tell us no to casino gambling because it will lead to moral decay. Logistic ports for cruise ships and or cargo containers. People resource we are hard-working people yet our politicians have failed to bring in - Pharmaceutical jobs, tech jobs and other jobs that our proximity to the USA, Canada and the Panama canal can be an asset to. Even tourism... Until we move it from being just on our beaches to inland - emphasizing, arts, history, food, music and not just sun and sand. So the details we are getting from the Chinese and others are loans and services tied to long term repayment at rates that drains us. For example the tolls from Highway 2000

@@hthompson4401 This is the inherent problem with our culture, we're above reproach. Diction and Accent are not the same things. If you opted to "present" the quality of the presention should and must be considered. I, too, found aspects of his narration unbearable due to mispronounced words and poor grammar. If a viewer (which I'm sure he should encourage to return) points out that he should factor all potential audience, this is positive criticism. It's not a (Jamaican accent) thing to mispronounced words. At the very least, rehearse before recording.
