    I use the R1 and a Red16Line at one of the studios I work at, and along with x2 A16R's, only having 12 controllable channels is a joke and so insanely frustrating that I resonate so much with this video :D

    I must confess that I am a Focusrite fanboy and have relied on several of their interfaces. As someone who recently invested in a Red 16 Line and R1 controller for my overdub and now Atmos studio, I absolutely love it. The big caveat that I am avoiding however, is that my setup only 7.1.4. It seems that many interfaces out there are being designed for nothing greater than 7.1.4 such at the Red16Line and the Apogee Symphony I/O, which I believe also only supports up to 12 controllable outputs (could be wrong tho) . Hopefully manufacturers including Focusrite wake up and give us the projects that we are asking for, and make systems over 12 channels easier to set up.

      We’ve loved Focusrite for the longest time as well, but this really doesn’t make sense. Call it the RED R1 for starters, and with almost every converter chip available offering a channel count in a multiple of 8, 12 channels of control is just plain stupid. It doesn’t matter if the end user only wants 7.1.4, if you’re selling a 16 channel interface then sell a 16 channel controller to back it up!

    The trinnov units are amazing. My st2 changed my professional life. The La Remote is insanely overpriced. An elgato stream deck is a more complex device with more buttons, a bigger display and ultimately just a usb interface for application specific macros. The la remote volume knob is an excellent piece of ergonomic design but it's still about 3x what it should cost if it shouldn't have been bundled with their products anyway.

    My solution was to use an Allen and Heath SQ 5 mixing desk as a switching/control matrix with an iPad as remote control, made presets for all variations and switched between, basically a 64 in 32 out pristine 96k digital routing with all the extra input/output options you have as a mixing desk and all the onboard options to, and all for about €5000 at the time……Dante card is also an option as well as most other options

    Or you can switch to cubase/Nuendo and not use a monitor controller and use all the built in monitor controls which rival the best mixing boards in the world (while using the Focusrite interface). with inserts on all monitor paths through the Daw(even hardware) and all controllable with any midi controller. I use a native instruments x1 which allows me to control everything in my monitor section. (used about $100) couple this with the metric a/b vst plugin ($29 on sale) and cubase's huge meter solutions you could save tens of thousands of dollars and never leave the digital domain.

      Can you control everything in cubase's control room feature from your ipad with the cubase remote?

    • @gotyor
      @gotyor 11 месяцев назад

      @@WarrenPostma I don't have the cubase ic pro app but I am very familiar with it. And yes some of the features could be assigned that are toggled based features buttons. And it does allow you to set cue levels for headphone mixes. But some of the more advanced features found in the control room would really be better suited for a midi controller to be assigned to. With that said there are some great midi controller apps for tablets. I use one called touch daw. Now with that one you can build your own interface... but I will warn ya, its a lot of work. Honestly if you have the room find a good midi controller that's hardware. You can find some small ones cheap, and those are easy to assign everything in the monitor section. I used the Native Instruments x1 mk2 (its a dj controller) its built like a tank and comes with software to edit parameters.

    I'm not using a totally digital workflow, but I really love using my Apollo Twin Mk II as a monitor controller (I'm using an Apollo x8p as my main interface and the twin as satellite).
    Since my monitors are purely analog ATC SCM25 MkIIs, I don't see the need for a Larry. But I do want to replace SoundID Reference with a Trinnov Nova at some point soon.

    Please answer this: How does attenuating audio levels digitally not affect the audio resolution? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I just don't see how you could not loose the least significant bits when lowering the bit depth, unless the entire chain is 64 bits, but it's 24 or 32 bits max in Dante for example, so HOW does a digital fader in a digital 24 bit chain doesn't make your music 8 bittish when you turn Larry down????????????

    I wish I had seen this video earlier. I just bought an RedNet A16R Dante to finally find out it is not controllable by a RedNet R1 Dante :-) So I then bought a Red 16Line to finally find out that it is not controllable either by the RedNet R1 Dante, except if you connect it through Thunderbolt :-( Then I learned taht most of the PC motherboards are not compatible with Thunderbolt. Conclusion: The R1 Dante only device, doesn't control any RedNet Dante only devices, it controls only a few thunderbolt devices. And me too I would love to sit one day at a Focusrite design team meeting. Anyway the 12 channels are enough for my 7.1.4 but why waste the other 4? And like someone else said it here, I am pretty sure the Allen & Heath SQ5 can do it all or even better.

      In a word, no! Although you can use the free Trinnov Remote app on a phone, tablet or computer, so if you can patch in a bit of software to control the +/- mouse clicks then it should be doable. You might even be able to set up a Loupedeck or something similar to do that.

    their newer interfaces have been kinda crappy, but otherwise, I'd agree with Focusrite as a choice; I have recently regretted that mindset, and a replacement DAC had _less_ channels, at the same price, and same name as the older device I was replacing. I wanted USB-C out of it as was advertised, but .. their answer to being USB-C was they gave me a USB-A-to-C cable... much disappointment.

    A cheap audio routing option everyone seems to ignore is having active monitors with Dante input on the back plate amp , and then just using Dante virtual soundcard software ($50) and routing everything over ethernet with a cheap switch and just setting up the audio channels directly in DAW and applying any system eq on the master channel using your favourite vst. No sound card, no controller, no processor/dsp needed and skips all of the unnecessary audio conversion steps in-between too.

    Am I the only one who doesn't understand why when you have two digital boxes talking to each other instead of just one that you connect to your monitoring speakers, why this is better than just having all your monitors fed direct by the audio interface? Is it about the length of the speaker cables? Is the reason because Trinnov takes over the duties of powering your unpowered high end studio monitors and having a lot of delay compensation features in a central box?

    The R1 is just a remote controller, you can still use all 16 channels of the Red 16Line and routing with the RedNet Control software for Atmos. You also imply that Focsusrite customer support is not as good, but in reality every question I've thrown at them has been replied to quickly. Also, GroundControl Sphere is ONLY for Mac. And how many studios are using Red 16Line for Dolby Atmos? Oh, yeah a lot. Is the R1 a required remote controller? No. All I see here is a highly biased and misinformative review.

      There are times in which you need a volume control when there aren’t any faders, and it’s much easier to have a physical knob than to mess around with whatever’s on screen. If something comes out dangerously loud, what’s quicker? Going to whichever program is faster and sodding around trying to find the master fader… or just turn the single physical volume knob
