Triple World Champion and 400 IM World Record holder Leon Marchand withdrew from competition at the 2023 U.S. Open Championships. Plagued with sinus problems and then surgery to remove his wisdom teeth, coach Bob Bowman kept Marchand home, recovering, and focused on getting back to top form during the winter training cycle. While wisdon teeth surgery is minor, it's still a punch backwards in an Olympic training year. What does this mean going forward? As of ASU's more recent dual meet last week, Leon swam:
1:32.6 - 200 yard free
53.0 - 100 yard breast
42.3 - lead-off on the 4x100 yard free relay
23.1 - 50 yard breast split on the 4x50 medley
Those times signal he's on track to wow us again at 2024 NCAA Championships. And, yes, I'm also factoring in Olympic Fever fueling him in training.
SwimSwam will back on deck at the battle of the titans, Cal Vs. ASU, next week. For swim nerds keeping score, last year at this meet Leon broke the 400 IM NCAA record, and then he went on to break it two more times--at PAC 12s and NCAA Championships.
I'm holding off on the NCAA "predictions game" until next week's big dual meet, but you can play however want.

will Léon swim the 200 breast or 200 fly this summer, place your bets
200 fly for sho
If schedule conflicts again
On a previous Swim Swam video he was doing 200 fly training with Luca Urlando and Ilya Kharun, so my money is on fly.
@@ebelsa (this is mel) I'd like to see Marchand focus on 2-fly, especially Bowman coaching him. I think everyone's waiting and wondering if Kristof Milak will be back to form this summer. If Kristof is anywhere near his top form, everyone else is swimming for sliver in the 200 fly.
@@SwimSwamTV Good point. I suppose it would be the smart move to choose the event with the best chance of gold, although I'd love to see a super stacked 200 fly final :)
