The Belmonts and Dion DiMucci had parted ways several years before Dion recorded Donna The Prima Donna. The backing vocals on the Columbia 45 are actually by the Del Satins.
It's not Dion and the Belmonts. The backing vocals in the original recording (not in this video clip, which has none) were done by a group called The Del Satins, who chose to go uncredited in all the records they did as Dion's backup singers, like The Wanderer, Runaround Sue, Ruby Baby, and many others.
Dion split with Belmonts in 1960, had a few solo hits with a female backing group, like "Lonely Teenager", then acquired the Del Satins as his backing group, for his big hits and not so big hits, left Laurie records and signed to Columbia Records in late 1962, where he had hits like "This little girl" "Drip Drop", but after healing from heroin addiction came back to Laurie for Abraham Martin and John going to no.4 billboard charts, in September 1968 written by Dick Holler the day after Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated.
@@splattt8088 They split because they wanted to sing different styles of songs. Angelo said there was no fight they just talked about it and split apart they were still always friends. The Belmonts went on to make great songs that did great such as Tell Me Why, Such A Long Way, I Need Someone, Come On Little Angel, and much more! Its quite sad because the rock and roll hall of fame only added Dion despite the Belmonts having success 3-4 years after Dion left the group PLUS all the hits they helped Dion get during their time together. Classic dumb judges!
Correct!!!! I keep seeing vids and hearing dion songs with the Del Satins backing claiming up saying it's Dion and Belmonts, you would think they would know better, especially with the DJs on the "oldies" station I listen to who are supposed to know about the records they play.

And doo wop
@@Mainer207if elvis is the king of rock n roll , who is the king of doo wop? I always wonder who is the king of the genre.
@@MiguelGonzalezPdude idk I love Elvis but I will say Dion’s rock and roll is up there: better than his doo wop imo. Ruby baby
One of my favorite songs ❤️ Dion Rocks
One of the greates italo american artist ever👌
One of my Favorites from DION. Great singer. Loved the simple lyrics, great melodies. Don't forget "The Wanderer." Hilarious.

🎉
❤ Dion got alot Style He is Style.
Dion's still giving us kick-ass songs even 60 years later. Every decade he surprises us.
This is amazing I wish there was more live footage. Why does he have no USA performances??
The younger watchers are probably wondering....zha zha who??? This is a great song...a real blast from the past.!!!
They're wondering what a five and ten cent store is, too.
Where are the Belmonts? Great song from my time! He still performs.
I love this! How did those kids just sit there like that? It’s crazy- that’s Dion!
This
?
Internet slang for "I agree"
It's in Belgium...
I could not have. I tap my feet and begin to sway in a way that resembles dancing as soon as I hear him sing.

Yep and later they knew it was a mistake
Facts!
Thanks Dion. You still are a prince even today!!
Such a great performance
I just love this song, it brings back the Jr. Hi. Days.
Thanks for sharing these pieces of history of the Best Music Thanks.
Very good but what happened to the Belmonts..thx I enjoyed it.
the Belmonts weren't with Dion at this time, i'm not sure why they split up but Fred died in 2012 and Carlo i 2016, Angelo and Dion are still alive

Interesting version. I prefer it though with the del satins doing backup.
Never saw that before, wow, love it, thanks
Give the band they out of their environment of music but held up great.
Possibly the greatest video on ALL of RUclips!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO Belmonts at all, Dion left the them and took lead with the Del Satins when he recorded this.

Im crying
Best version I've heard on here very good.
a treat here
OH MY GAAWD DION
This is s0 GOOD
Really cool. In fine voice. Unfortunate they used a horn band behind him instead of the Del Satins and a small rhythm section
ABSOLUTELY RARE BY ITSELF! AND EVEN MORE DOING A SOLO PERFORMANCE WITHOUT CORAL!
Try the Italian version. Just as great
This is Dion after he left the Belmonts they.did reunite many years later but this isn't it. And they've altered the song for big band backing
This performance is so reminiscent of Bobby Darin's style , it's uncanny . In fact if Bobby did this song it would be exactly like this . imo.
Screwed up second verse. Should have been "even though she's Donna next door". First verse of girl next door was correct
Live in Belgium, 1963.
Fabulous!!🎶🎶😎
Good singing but the band sucks

Ça va la drogue ?
BB
Maybe they were told to?
Actually live. Not that common back then.
WOW. Live without the Belmonts. Great.
Dion one of the best
sounds awful i like original better
This is the Bobby Darin style , I would think.
He wrks that audience
Where are the Belmonts?
He’s the best. What movie is this clip from?
It’s when he performed live in Belgium, 1963
Dion !!!
How cute is he?!!???!
I don't see the Belmonts.
..but no Belmonts here!!
what a dud audience !
Very good question!
Canta muito!
man he's sick
GREAT POST !!!
Brilliant
where are the del-satins?. the song sucks without them
Sometimes a lead voice is recorded seperate from backup singers or extra music session
Great voice such talent
