Kenneth MacMillan began work on Manon shortly after the birth of his only daughter. His source was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score made from a patchwork of works by Massenet, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet's repertory.
MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon, bringing his customary psychological insight and the memories of his own impoverished upbringing. He described his heroine as 'not so much afraid of being poor as ashamed of being poor'. Designs by MacMillan's friend Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable poverty. MacMillan's spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux's impassioned pas de deux - recalling the intensity of MacMillan's earlier work, Romeo and Juliet - that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan's most heartbreaking dramas.

She is such a great actress. She and Bonelli have the perfect chemistry, both physically and dramatically. She has to be one of the best ballerinas on this role. Besides having the movements of a swan with perfect control, her expression is both of innocence and seduction. And in the last act you can feel the despair in her face, attitude and movements. I so want the dvd of this performance! As much as i like rojo and acosta together in everything, and certainly in this ballet, and as much as i feel that rojo is the queen of manon's solo in the second act, the one with the shoulders, i have to prefer nunez and bonelli.
    DVD PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE :(

Federico Bonelli has one of the best names I've ever heard in my life: it's easy on the ears, super fun to say, and it's rhythmical. If I'm honest, I'm a little jealous haha.

I used to live in London and tried as often as possible to attend performances of the RB , my record being 11 performances in one calendar month ( standing for GBP5.00 a performance ) . Now living in Florida where there is not so much ballet I crave ballet and viewing this type of clip for me is heaven. To view these type of intimate clips such is this one I am commenting on which are so informative and hearing the words how the dancers actually feel about what they are doing is so informative for myself . Please more of this type of video from the RB , I really appreciate them Bigggg Time

not very classy to say "she is this incredibly beautiful girl....." yourself about a character you are going to portray....that means you consider yourself ALSO an "incredible beautiful girl" (-:

She means that is the character she is playing. The character is well aware of her good looks and charm and uses it to her benefit. She is not unaware of her beauty.
