I agree that you’re (very unfairly) disadvantaged by being a rookie this year. On a positive note, your social media presence is strong and getting stronger every day. It was just last year that you openly wondered whether to fish tournaments at all, or whether to grow the YT channel. You’ve succeeded extremely well on both fronts this year.

I would want to identify and keep track the best I could, who the top 35 are.... if for nothing more than keeping them honest! .. and coming up with the best strategic plan for each tournament. The first thought I had when the cut the field and payouts is that the are struggling with money and sponsorships and i worry they will fold in the next few years. As a fan, I hate seeing 100 - 1lb bass caught over best 5, and they definitely have made the lifetime rule to pander to the OG anglers of the BPT. Great Video Matt. I love the real talk!

I appreciate you telling about the BPT changes, it just sucks that it's changing for you in having to pay to enter & that it's not going to pay all the anglers, you finally get there & the excitement of it, then BAM oh your going to have pay to play & you have place in the top 40 or 50 to get a check, but I believe in you man, you have a gift not many have it's instinct, & you are going to do great!! Myself, I like every fish counts format, man I love it, I signed up for MLF channel just to watch past episodes, the brand of every angler is mainly up to them on how well they do on the tour & off, there are many that have a RUclips channel but they are not consistent with it & it hurts them in views, because you have to interact with your audience to become popular & if you don't at least acknowledge that someone watches your channel then it's not going to grow that's one of the great things I like about your channel, also some of the BPT anglers really are just going through the motions or not really trying, I maybe wrong but that's how I see it! 👍🎣

I was so excited to see you win that last tournament and qualify for the BPT. Now I am concerned. I don't like these changes either. A lot of great anglers will be left out or moving on to a different series. I heard even Marty Stone won't be announcing for MLF next year. Crazy. Wow. Eye opening. …. Relatively new to bass fishing. I picked up a baitcaster 3 yrs ago …. That being said I think it’s the result of RUclips, Instagram, whatever social media why tournament fishing may be struggling. It’s hard for me being a shift worker to catch any type of live coverage and it’s coverage that at times isn’t all that great. I really look forward to certain anglers recaps and their non-tournament footage videos on RUclips. Which I think there are more RUclips anglers I follow than pros, simply because I’m a bank angler so being able to see people fish from the bank are the vids I’m going to gravitate towards. ….. anyway, you’re one of my favorite pros because you use this platform to show more than just tournament fishing. Keep it up and just stay steady, you’ll be alright.

Sounds like some really serious changes which makes the sport much tougher to stay in if you're not doing well. Apparently, they're seeking to thin the herd and get rid of those guys who aren't doing well but just keep hanging on. That's a shame because lots of the big-time anglers I've heard speak talk about not doing well when they started out and having to build their career slowly. That's going to be much more expensive to do now. I hope none of it negatively affects you or your career- good luck man.

When BPT split off I thought it was going to be so amazing. Couldn’t wait for the first tournament to start and as the years have gone by it’s gotten to be where I really don’t care about BPT at all. I’d rather watch BTL Zoe Jonny or Matt’s videos or just tune into the old school BM. I wish wheeler and all the greats would go back to BM. It’s just gimmicky even 5 years in. This is another example of what the increase in tournament, circuits over the past few decades has done to the sport. It has devaluated what a tournament circuit can bring to an advertiser. In terms of impressions and brand building opportunities Bassmaster or mlf cannot compete with individual social media influencers. That is why both organizations struggle every year to maintain and court new sponsorships. I would venture to say that one bass fishing RUclipsr with a large following would be more valuable to an advertiser than being a title sponsor for either mlf or Bassmaster because you have a definitive set of analytics that can prove that versus the very gray area when it comes to tournament value. In a sense FLW created this problem when they started their tournaments in 1996. It made it tougher for tournament organizations and anglers to stand out and gain any type of long-term viable, financial partnerships, and it’s probably only gonna get more difficult.

I agree with your frustration. MLF just can't seem to settle on a fishing platform. However, their catch-weigh-release format is a step in the right direction in regard to fish health.
The BFL's are no better after being taking over from FLW. In some anglers' opinions, including mine, pro's that've won hundreds of thousands of dollars fishing professionally shouldn't be allowed to compete in BFL events. Some 20+ years ago, BFL's were primarily established for the weekend anglers. It was intended to give them a chance to compete locally, and climb the ladder to qualify to compete in more professional events. That concept seems to have totally been swept under the rug.

My opinion only. We are in the twilight of pro bass fishing. Too many people fighting for too small of a pie. The fan base is limited and always has been. The tournament organizations are struggling to do the impossible. Many journeyman fisherman need to bite the bullet and get a job and fish regional and state events and get on with life. 🍺Matt. That sucks.🤮 It may be necessary in order to try and achieve a business model that is sustainable but at first glance it doesn’t pass the smell test and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I would call these things drastic changes. When a fan of the MLF can not even be sure of the rules/format/fish limit/ pay out placements etc on a year to year basis it makes your organization look weak/confused. Maybe I’m old-school, but I like consistency with perhaps very small changes here and there if necessary. I would rather watch someone catch a 20 pound bag 👍then catch 100 pounds of FFS keepers out of a school👎.
😤I’m frustrated with the news but it is what it is at this point and It’s know you’ll stay positive and give it your all. We shall see🤞🙏.

Im not into the tournament scene and i have little knowledge of what is required to run these tournaments. To me this is excellent opportunity for a group of wealthy anglers and youtube anglers with cash to start a new scene -- yes it be a lot of work but if 30-35 anglers get cut then start another league. They do in other sports and it draws it own crowd, investors and interest. Just a thought 🤔

@@MattStefanFishing it would have my full support and I'm sure a lot of others. And as far as gaining more support and getting more eyes on with platforms like RUclips and Twitch I'm sure something could get put together to stream these events, get some advertising for them etc. I know there's more to it but to me if there's money and interest -- there's a possibility with some hard work.
