Join me as we wander around Riga looking for a Latvian obsession.
We arrive at the bus station and head straight to the Old Town of Riga, meet some locals and finally make it to the supermarket.
We later head for the Riga Central Market and meet our Latvian Native friend Anna who goes over this delicious Latvian obsession ( and sometimes not so delicious).

@@J.E.E black bread goes well with any soup. i have tried a soup with white bread only once or twice in my life. tikai un vienīgi rupjmaize. if translated to English it actually means a coarse bread. not black bread.
@@arisplugis5197If you want to be pedantic, the English translation of 'rupjmaize' is rye bread. For the ease of conversation, most people just refer to it as black bread.
@@Diablo-jt4tv in US I say rye bread, most Americans understand me , maybe because of rye whiskey 🥃🤣 . Unfortunately I have to shop in European markets, in other stores just German “pumpernickel” not the same . In Lithuania “Birzų duona” iš the best !

My personal favorite way to eat black bread is by dipping it into my coffee with sweet cream. Yum~

This video is the first time I see a Latvian who hasn't tried black bread soup. I grew up with it. Didn't really like it much as a kid, but love it now.
As to why Latvians love it, it's always been the local working man's food - cheap, nutritious and filling. Nothing like a good slice of black bread with a slice of salo and a sprinkling of fresh garlic to keep a man going through a day of hard work at the farm or factory.
One of my favourite uses for black bread is garlic toasts, which are an ideal snack with beer. One can buy them readily-made, but if you ever feel like making some at home, the best kind of bread for that is Borodinsky, a brand seasoned with coriander and caraway popular around the former Soviet Union. Folks commonly call it "brick" because it's baked in a mould. One can use other brands too but they tend to get too hard - "brick" bread gets just the right kind of crispy.

The best black bread soup i tried i had in one of the soup restaurants called tikai karotes. They serve a delicious big portion of the soup and honestly that may be the only thing you may need for a good meal. In many other places its small and usually is supposed to be a dessert @@J.E.E

I love bread soup and also yoghurt with black bread. Didn't tried karums with black bread yet. Everything with dark rye bread tastes amazing. When I was a child living on countryside the best evening dessert snack was rye bread with jam (raspberry or strawberry) and fresh milk.

As a kid I didn't like black bread altogether, maybe wouldn't mind it with butter and salt. But I liked garlic black bread (still do). At least my mom cooked black bread in oil (in pan or in pot) and grate garlic on the bread. Or something like that.
So of course as a kid I didn't like black bread soup when it was as desert in school lunch.
However now that I haven't eat it in a while I recently thought about it that I haven't eat it and maybe now I would like it. And now I see it in a video.

I think Latvians would also find it weird to have chocolate on a cheese, because the cottage cheese used for Karums isn't really a cheese in the minds of Latvians. There's a different term for that in Latvian: "biezpiens", which literally translates to "thick milk" and milk goes well with chocolate :) In fact, people say that it's better to use the word "quark" instead of the "cottage cheese" to describe the "biezpiens" as the cottage cheese usually has added salt, while quark/biezpiens doesn't.

I love black bread buttered, with eggs and anchovies. It's also delicious with sour cream, tomatoes and onions, and my favorite sweet style is with cream cheese and raspberry jam. Since I live in America, I've never had the chance to taste the bread soup or candies. Funny that nobody in the Latvian community here makes the bread soup.
The anchovy version sounds amazing.

Wonderful video! And you were right when you said "Good Morning" to lady who sold you vodka, before 12 pm it is always morning. Also there used to be Ice cream with black bread and for some reason they stopped producing it. I miss it.

Kārums with black bread? We've not yet discovered this particular iteration of one of our staple "something tasty" treats, but that won't be true for much longer. Also, rupjmaize zupiņa (with a nice dollop of whipped latvian cream, which I'd love to compare back to back with Devon clotted cream one day) has become something I adore.

Black bread comes with evry soup. Black bread is Hard hawy and .. some says 1 slice Black bread with "kūpināts speķis" gives ultimate strenght for mens.

Justine is not embellishing the Latvian's LOVE of Black Bread! I attended Latvian Heritage weekend, here in DC, where the bread was being sold! There was also a presentation regarding their reverence of Latvian Black Bread!

Just because they speak Russian doesn't mean they are Russian. Latvians know how to speak Russian, and it's easier for Justin to communicate in Russian. He's only learning Latvian, but has been speaking Russian for many years.
