If you have been following our story, you will recognize this project all the way back to it's RUclips premiere on The Great American Farm Tour with Justin Rhodes. I really like the layout of the the plantings. The difference in sunlight is nice . Areas of full sun , dappled light and shade. Must have it's own microclimate.oh yeah, and I love the disco ball!
This project was a favorite for me also!
I keep revisiting these and gleaning more, over the yrs as I try more stuff more insights become relevant, today it was especially about pineapples and starfruit, I'm in marginal 9a farther N. Cali and failed with pineapples so far but still trying.
This was perfectly timed, I'm planning another trip to Echo farms Thursday, this refreshes my 'want' list...what a beautiful garden paradise, only a year in to mine and already I have people stopping by with questions...my most fave comment is, 'we can hardly see your house now'...YES, fist pump...as I learn the Florida seasons and what to plant or not, I daily pinch myself AND I'm so glad to have found you guys...um, excuse me while I click repeat...

Me too, more katuk, chaya, galangal, edible hibiscus, another banana, and a beautiful Noni tree...bought few hausa potato plants to try, my Okanawa spinach is about 5 ft across now...are we having fun yet...!
@@milkweeddreams8828any tips for the spinach in our area? Should u plant it in a container, raised bed, etc? Not sure how much sun either.
Andrew S I planted mine in the understory, partial sun/shade, nothing special, just organic soil in the hole and fish emulsion...raised bed would work, but I just let mine ramble, it's beautiful and lush.

I can say from experience, adding a permaculture garden adds value to a house! I bought my place in vero beach in summer 2016 for $105k and sold it for $145k in December 2017! I completely believe it was because of the work I put into the yard and house itself. Crazy! Good looking yard Pete, nice job!
There was also at the beginning of the real estate market taking a turn let me up with position that house is probably worth more now just because of the market.
But I am curious as to the extent you created a food Forest -- what did you do?

That yellow flower towards the beginning in tickseed, or coreopsis, Florida's state wildflower. Our state "flower" is the orange blossom. The flower on our license plate is the blanket flower or gallardia.
Great episode Pete. Love the updates. We focus on herbs and veggies but bought a house in Phoenix and learning about trees.

Video is labeled Spring Hill, FL, but narrated as being in Pasco County. Spring Hill is in Hernando County but borders north Pasco County in the Hudson area. Land value in Florida, ain't no joke! I have 1/2 an acre and the land value as of this post 6/2021 is $90K. Does that mean, $180K for an acre? I don't know but, the math wouldn't be too difficult to configure. Of course, this is Altamonte, but still. Improving the garden with structures? Putting in palms and high-end fruit trees? I'm thinking, this is definitely the way to go.

Pete, I have Beauty Berry on my place that’s a great bird attractor. Be careful with the Shampoo ginger as it can be invasive. I regret planting it on my place up here in Gilchrist County. I also have Bananas that make fruit most years. My problem with growing Pineapple is as they get just about ready to pick a critter most likely a raccoon will come along and eat it. Frustrating.Have these folks tried any figs? Looks like a good location for citrus. Nice garden and well designed.
Shampoo Ginger doesn't seem to be as invasive as Spiral Ginger.
So how do you think D. Asper will grow in Dunnellon. Thats about 30 miles North of you, just east of Crystal River. I saw UFL rates it good for all Florida. It freezes to ground and comes back like that?

I'm very curious about upward water movement in sandy soil. I know water infiltrates very quickly and deeply into it but does anyone know of a source that discusses water movement against gravity up through the sand ? I water lightly and often. My sandy soil is always moist even deep down. They say water attracts water so I'm wondering if my keeping the top soil moist helps attract and pull up additional water from deeper below to the surface and also into the soil from the air. If the soil drys out it repels water.
I used fish emulsion on my houseplants that were in front of a window. I left the window open and overnight an animal clawed through the screen and destroyed my collection. I think it was attracted to the smell.

Is it normal for Mexican sunflower to lean over, I planted them about a month ago they are about 16 inches tall seems like they lean over after rain or watering for a pretty long time, like a cpl days. Didnt know it i should put some steaks in to hold them up or are mine just weak for some reason (beginner error lol). But I noticed when I put a tag on any of the branches so I dont forget what they are it seems to really effect the branch so was afraid to tie the whole plant to a steak...hope that makes sence
When it gets large it can weep a little, I’d give it a few weeks to establish some roots. They’re fairly tough plants.
I’m in Land o lakes/Wesley Chapel area. Have an acre. Interested in edible plants, but we have a huge deer population daily. They have eaten so much before. How to deal with deer and plants?

is the disco ball some kind of pest deterrent? ive heard (and tried) of pennies in a bag of water so this might be something like it.
Melody and Papa Bear lol not sure if it was added as a pest deterrent. But I have heard of hanging old CD’s from trees etc to ward of birds and pests.
Disco ball/cd swill reflect light so that deer, rabbits, birds, etc will be very apprehensive
that the glint of light may be the glint off the eyes of a predator. Then again, the disco ball may just be a bit of "whimsy".
Oh yeah, I have hanging CDs in my garden.
Where do you buy your sunshine mimosa seeds (mimosa strigillosa)? I can only find mimosa pudica seeds online.
I haven’t had the greatest success with seeds. I buy them as plants from my local commercial nursery in bulk.
Thanks, I will keep an eye out for them at my local nursery. I'm in southern California, and I don't think that perennial peanut or sunshine mimosa are as common around here.
Pete, the only thing that survived out of my food forest box is the spinach tree. I cant find any recipes for tree spinach. Got any recipies?
Jill King sorry to hear that. We prefer the longevity spinach sautéed with a little salt and pepper. It goes really well with a tomato sauce also.

Jill King you must be getting confused with the Chaya, it must be cooked. The longevity spinach can be eaten raw :)

Why mess around with time intense swale ??? Where have you been? Forget the swale. Get a pair or 2 of beavers and an equal number of nutria ; protect them from gators for 18 months etc viola! !! All the hydro-geographic work will be done to perfection. The water table, water shed, swaile,, Rares of runoff and flow will have been slowed such that the sand will become mixed with aggregates less prone to erosion the planet's original hydrographic engineers will ALWAYS do a more through job than humans
