Here's a question I have about Aikido: In theory, if I were to take two Karate classes every week AND two Aikido classes every week (if I had that kind of time and money), would that be a bad thing? Are these two martial arts just so different from each other (Aikido has gentle striking, while Karate strikes hard) that it would only confuse me, and leave me not knowing what to do if I got into a real fight?

If you can master both arts it would then be called Aiki Karate. Aikido can merge with anything. Literally. Ie. It can be merged with cooking food. It would then be called Aiki Cooking. Efficiency is maximized in every aspect. This is the unachievable idea about Aikido.

У нас тренер по Айкидо одновременно является мастером Карате, так что нет проблем.

@@Vengeance888 Thank you! That is exactly the answer that I was looking for!

@@johnvem949 you are welcome, that is just my opinion. It is up to you to find the your answer. Aikido also focuses on joint locks. In Chinese there is a sayin “First fists and legs, after joint locks, then weapons”. Aikido joint lock techniques are basically useless if striking is not there to back it up. Aikido practitioners need to either make peace with this fact or go learn a striking art. Karate and Aikido compliments each another.

I’ve been doing aikido for 15 years, I’m an instructor now. I’ve been doing karate for a year. If you do both, as I have found you’ll improve on both faster, with stronger stance, faster movements, improved fitness. I personally haven’t found any bad or awkward crossover between the 2, I’d say if you want to do both, go ahead

There is little or nothing left of O'Sensei's aikido. How can he carry the name of Ueshiba while practicing in this way ? So sad for the still alive uchi deshi ...
