Lists like this, more than almost anything, prove the old adage that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are at least five cars on this list that I thought were great-looking, mainly because they did NOT try to conform to the standard that everyone expects. I love the Gremlin. I love the Cube. I love the VW Thing. If it weren't a Chrysler product, I would want a PT Cruiser. If I ever find a Suzuki X-90 in decent shape, I'm going to buy it. I currently own a Nissan Juke. And the Smart?
I once hit 60mph on a dead straight road in my daughters Smart car taking it to Tesco to refuel it for her. It was singularly the scariest experience I have EVER had driving a vehicle. And I speak as an ex-Post Office lorry driver who one day whilst not paying attention encountered a newly built roundabout that I was not expecting, whilst doing 60mph in my 7.5 ton P.O. lorry. We're talking video game playing levels of expertise to get across that roundabout without hitting anything. Many pants were soiled that day.
The Type 181 "Thing" was actually based off the Kubelwagen, a German military vehicle similar to the Jeep. They also had an amphibious model named the Schvimwagen.

I had a friend who drove a Pontiac Aztek in the early 2K and I got to admit it was really a well design comfortable ride. I almost thought of getting one.
_Looney Tunes: Back In Action_ featured Brendan Fraser driving a Gremlin. It even played the theme from the _Gremlins_ series when the car was first shown.
My first car was an AMC Hornet, which was basically a Gremlin with four doors and a trunk; it was one heck of a car, and ran forever. I used to refer to its paint color as "Crest toothpaste green." It was a primitive little beast, but it got the job done.
I can see why people didn't take the Prowler or the PT Cruiser seriously, but I don't get why they were so hated. They don't strike me as unusually ill-proportioned and the PT Cruiser was really a Neon with a lot more space. As far as retro-imposter-cars go, the first generation New Beetle was more annoying. There are so many cars, like the Datsun F10, the Delorean, and the Lambroghini Countch that deserve to be on this list more than any of the retro-phonies.
Fun fact probably you guys didn’t even know: Lagonda was intentionally created to be a luxury brand separate from Aston Martin. Like Rolls Royce to BMW or Bentley to VW! Lagonda wasn’t a trim level of Aston it was a whole different brand. But as you can probably see, they attempted to sell that particular lagonda back in the 70s for 190,000$ You can tell they failed miserably And the Aztek was extremely underrated, it wasn’t as bad as everyone raved about! The last years when it was full coloured rather than two tone, actually didn’t look so bad!
When I was living in California with a friend, we each wanted to get a Gremlin and then paint them like hightop sneakers. We thought it would look funny to have a massive pair of sneakers in the drive way. This was before Google Maps, but the satellite view would be pretty awesome if we did it today!🤣
Wonder what they were thinking when they designed it like that. If it ran like what it looks like, it’d be up there as the worst car ever along with the Yugo.
My mom owned both a Gremlin and PT Cruiser ragtop. I liked the Gremlin. I owned an Aztek. No, it wasn't an attractive car, but... it was the most versatile vehicle I ever owned. However, I had electronic issues from day one. I really like the Lagonda, but from what I understand, it has more issues than National Geographic.
This is a good list - the Prowler and the Aston Martin are maybe not the most beautiful cars, but they still somehow work. Especially if you understand them in the context of the time they were launched. Missing are the Mercedes S-Class W-140 and the American Ford Taurus station wagon 1996/97.
The fact that any modern cars are good looking will always shock me. They are designed in such a weird, piecemeal manner. Some auto designers spend their whole careers only designing steering wheels, for example. Which is why the most sought-after job in car design is designing Hotwheels. It’s one of the few jobs where you get to design the whole car.
The Pontiac Aztek was once described as an SUV taking a dump, or something along those lines. Surprised the Ford Edsel didn't make this list. Its front looks like it's sucking a lemon while making a puckering face.
I dunno I like a lot of these. They look different. Cars nowadays all look the same. If I couldn't see the logo on the back of every car then I wouldn't be able to tell any of them apart.
The Multipla was really horrible (in Italy we used to joke that if you got an accident against one of them, you would die not from the hit, but from a heart attack because of the sheer horror) but sold pretty well as a family car, having six seats and a lot of available fuel combinations suited for practically everyone (gasoline, diesel, gasoline/LPG, gasoline/CNG).
What’s ironic is I actually had a neighbor in the town that I was living in until about four years ago that actually had one of those little Citicars. Also I find it kind of silly that in this video they mentioned that the whole electric vehicle thing went back to the 70s. Actually electric vehicles go all the way back to pretty much the Genesis of the affordable car. In fact, some of the first first automobiles that weren’t powered by steam. Especially after electricity became widely available were electric. You can actually find photographs of electric cars from like 1905 and stuff like that in parking lots with large power cables attached to junction boxes allowing them to recharge. In fact, one hilarious thing is electric cars back then we’re actually a lot safer than ICE automobiles. Another thing. S-Cargo actually isn’t sold here in America. It is purely a car that is manufactured or was manufactured in Japan. It falls under the category of Kei-Car. Which is a category of subcompact basically that is meant specifically for the rather crowded streets of metropolitan Japan. Essentially what the device is is basically meant to be a small delivery van of sorts. I fully understand why everybody hates the juke. I don’t think I’ve met anybody who’s ever driven one that actually liked it. Also, I find it interesting that the Nissan cube is on the list but the scion XB isn’t. Now I actually have owned a scioN XB. And yes, it was a rolling box but I didn’t care. I also don’t really care that people don’t seem to like the cube. It may not be the prettiest car out there, but at the very least it tries something slightly different with that asymmetric rear window design. Because let’s face it 99% of the cars that come out today they all look the same The majority of them all have largely the same body design. And they essentially just look like they’re coming out of repeat molds. It’s kind of like somebody took the phrase quote to break the mold“ and basically decided to reverse that. Basically they took the broken mold and put it back together. So many cars, especially ones that have come out in probably the last 15 years have just been utterly terrible looking. we need to go back to automobiles that all had really unique designs and looks to them. Cars that actually could stand out without even trying. We need to go back to things like the El Camino. or the classic Chevy Impala. Or hell even the crown Victoria.
One of my friends had a white cube, and her custom plate was C6H12O6. Those who are not scientific, that is the molecular formula for Glucose. My friend had a Sugar Cube.
Personally, I like a lot of these cars. But as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've always loved the Plymouth Prowler, definitely one of my favorite car designs of all time. I've also always liked the Gremlin, it has a unique, quirky charm to it. I liked the PT Cruiser's modern throwback look, I think it's a good design. It must have looked good, because where I used to live in Southern California, they were absolutely everywhere. Honestly, some of these cars just make me laugh. The number 1 spot really gave me a good laugh and was one of the very few on this list I actually thought was ugly.

Because let’s face it 99% of the cars that come out today they all look the same
The majority of them all have largely the same body design.
If you noticed, a lot of these cars were produced in the 70’s. The decade where the goal was to make the ugliest car.
One of my friends had a white cube, and her custom plate was C6H12O6. Those who are not scientific, that is the molecular formula for Glucose. My friend had a Sugar Cube.
Sucrose actually. I started thinking of a Cube with HYPER as a custom plate, making it a Hyper Cube.
It's amazing the Cube topped the list, while the even boxier and more horrid Scion didn't receive a mention.
I have a really bad feeling I’m gonna love most of these cars. 🤣🤣🤣
Quirky enough for one to come apart when you try starting it.
