    The entire ballet is incredibly amazing, but this Pas de deux stands out. How could someone compose such a heavenly music? Simply I can't find the answer. It goes beyond my thinking. The only thing I can say with all my forces: A MILLION THANKS TCHAIKOVSKY!!!!

    • @BertFripp
      @BertFripp 4 года назад +87

      Tchaikovsky wrote this pas de deux in a very difficult period of his life, he was unwell and everything was somehow going wrong. Taking into account the fact that Tchaikovsky was an eerie melancholic in his temperament - perhaps such moments give rise to absolute magic in music.

    A friend of mine, who loves Tchaikovsky, told me about how his late brother loved playing the trumpet. He wasn't good at all he just loved playing it. People and classmates would make fun of his playing and they would tell him to give it up. My friend could tell it really hurt his brothers feelings. His brother was gentle and sweet. He was a little slow but that didn't stop him from always trying his best. My friend told me that after his brother passed away at a young age he found condolences in this piece. At the very end where the trumpets are in unison, holding that note, loud and bold, he always pictures his brother playing alongside them, proud and happy.

      I agree! For me, this song MUST be tentative, lilting and languid, or the essence is totally lost! Plus, once they build up to that crashing climax, it actually means something! I have full body chills at that part in this performance, whereas I often find that part almost noisy and obnoxious in a faster performance.

    My dear friend had this playing at his funeral, along with Piano Trio (Shostakovich), and Piano Concerto No.2 (Rachmaninoff). He had a full orchestra in a cathedral, even though he wasn't religious. He likes these three Russians, as he would call them. "The golden trio." He was an exceptional young fellow, a gentleman. Always dapper, always spoke well, and read a lot too. He was 19 at the age of death, and he knew it was about to happen. Handled it very stoic. When people came around, he asked "Have they swept away the gravel?" (After winter). Or "Did the postman come as usual today?" He knew we all were in grief, but somehow I think he enjoyed it. But the funeral was beautiful, he had structured the songs in a particular order, first the Piano Trio (haunting violin tragedy), then this, and lastly Piano Concerto. He made someone read from the Illiad and some own poems. One of them was: We leave nothing to this world. Our life is for ourselves. And another one about a love of his, I don't know whom:
    So you look out for the stars
    Pay attention to the birds
    And the oceans
    And hope to glimpse her there
    And that constant hope
    Becomes you very reality.
    He had so many friends you never thought about. It was us at his age, from school and childhood. But then there were people all around the world. Young as old. Men, women. He had a dozen people flying in from Italy that I never knew existed. And they all had such beautiful stories about him. There was a girl too, from the west coast. She loved him uncontrollably, and I knew this would never end for her. For me, the whole thing was so beautiful I wanted to die too.

    This and the Swan Theme ( "Swan Lake", Act II, 10 scene) are the embodiment of the romantic concept of sublime.
    How Tchaikovsky did this, I cannot explain; something out of the human mind

    Most heartfelt, inspired and impressive interpretation I've ever heard. Maestro Gergiev is great! I had the chance to work with his sister and to sing under his nephew's baton. I hope one day to meet the Maestro himself...

    I’m a dancer and I play a couple instruments and in my opinion this song is the most passion filled out of all of the ballets
    The music is packed to the top with beauty and elegance, and the graceful nature of the dance leaves the audience amazed with the passion and supremacy of the combination. I associate it with sitting in the wings with other dancers and cheering for the dancers on stage when they get the lift or turn that they have been working on for months and being almost jealous that they got to perform to this. I also think of the times when I have played simplified and complicated versions on my instruments. I love this piece more than dance and instruments combined

    For our symphony show we played this in the winter, and it was so hard to master without breaking down after practices and rehearsals. And yet the piece brings chills to my spine every time it’s played, and sitting in the middle of the orchestra playing it you don’t get the effect the audience does… this video brings it to life
