At last!!! A cameraman who keeps the focus on the pianists hands, where it should be, rather than wandering all over the place e.g. the pianist's face, the hall, the audience et al. A great part of the pleasure for piano lovers is to enjoy the technique of great performers. The combination of sight and sound is entrancing. Well done!

This is a level of mastery that few will ever witness, fewer will ever appreciate, and almost none will ever themselves attain. I’ve watched the pas de deux portion of this performance probably 50+ times, and listened to Pletnev’s own recording of it another hundred or so. It never gets old. I am aware statements like these risk pretension, but I truly believe this to be the pinnacle of art.

This performance is near perfect to my taste. Which is peculiar because other performances are either "not on par", or might be preferred by people with other inner "sense of rhythm". Here, when I expect a passage to go smooth and quiet, it goes this way. And when my expectation is of sharp sound - I'm not disappointed. So, I have the best match between my inner "melody" and the sound of the piano. It is absolutely pleasing to listen to. Great job!

Pletnev's arrangement and Volodin's playing made me come amazingly close to forgetting I was listening to one person playing one piano and not an orchestra. Blasted Russian pianists; their technique is unassailable! (It has more weight and power to it than the Chinese (Lang, Wang, Yang, Chien). Was just watching Lubyantsev's Paganini-Liszt Variations (sensational). I'm partial to Scherbakov, Ovchinikov, Lisitsa, Kultyshev (and Sultanov-may he rest in peace). But Volodin's technique is stellar. He is definitely a supergiant in the universe of pianists. It is astonishing to watch him bring music to life (and a little irksome, 'cause he looks so casual and relaxed, spitting out notes like its nothing!).

THE NUTCRACKER was arranged for piano by Sergey Taneyev, but in view of the difficulty of this arrangement, Tchaikovsky made a simplified one of his own. This work was carried out at the end of August 1892 [46].
