I had no idea so many Poles were on the team cracking the enigma code!

Polish intelligence hired group of polish math students in September of 1932, they gave them civilian version of enigma, some not very important data from French intelligence, and big amount of ciphered messages.
At 31 of December 1932, as I remember a date, Marian Rejewski read first message, or, saying other words, he cracked an enigma.
Next seven years Germans were upgrading their codes and Poles were upgrading methods of cracking it.
At June 1939 polish intelligence, knowing about high possibility of coming war, gave it's work, and civilian version of enigma from ~1931 to agencies from France and Britain.
Alan Turing did cracked one of upgraded enigmas, but he based on years of cracking it by Zygalski, Rejewski and Różycki.
By the way, they were evacuated to France in September 1939, but left there when France fell.

Well to be specific it was Poles who cracked Enigma code but it was to slow for allies and also Germans added upgrade to machine so they passed the way and it was upgraded to decipher much faster.

@@necro0715 Nah, it wasn't to slow, just enigma was changed from time to time.
Still, math done by Rejewski was still quite similar.
Turing and rest of Bletchley Park team had to do some work of course, still, they could base on 7 years of polish crackings the enigma.

England also minimized the credit given to foreign fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain, including the fact that Polish fighters had the most kills and the least amount of casualties.

The memory of WWII and Soviet Union's brutal occupation is still fresh in Poland's mind.

During the war, Polish intelligence conducted a number of actions and intelligence operations that were of key importance in the course of World War II. In 2005, a Polish-British historical commission found a note in the British archives, which shows that 45 percent of of all British intelligence reports from the Second World War came from Polish sources, of which 85 percent were from Polish sources. described as "high or very high quality"

Regarding enigma, code was broke by Polish mathematicians. Still it wasn't possible to use the knowledge without first machine-like-computers from Turing.

Basic models were also delivered prewar by polish intelligence. Germans altered it, so not whole coms could be read - but still. Turing got the machanics, code patterns and a device.

It's not a trailer to any film but it's a short film made by IPN (Institute of National Memory) especially for the 100 anniversary of gaining our independance in 1918 after 123 years of partitions when Poland wasn't on the maps. THANKS FOR YOUR REACTION :-)

The whole story about capturing the enigma and giving it back to the Allies is a ready-made script for a movie. It's worth hearing about Wojtek the bear who got a military rank. There are many beautiful stories about Poland fighting the occupiers during World War II.

IPN stands for Instytut Pamięci Narodowej, what means Institute of National Memory. It's an organization that belongs to the government with solely purpose of preserving and sharing history

4:55: It's not as straightforward as "Poles" or "Brits", because both made contributions indispensible to the end result.
Poles were the first to crack the early versions of Enigma before the war even began, but the Germans have developed upgrades that made decryption a more computationally "expensive" process. With the deteriorating political situation, in early 1939 copies of Polish research along with duplicates of the Enigma were passed on to France and Britain where it served as a starting point for Turing which then served as a foundation for the mass decryption program at Bletchley Park.
Without the British technological base and manpower, the later wartime Enigma upgrades would have remained unbroken, but without Polish research the Brits wouldn't have pulled it off anywhere as fast, if ever - Gordon Welchman, one of the British cryptologists working with Bletchley Park went on record that without Polish information it would have been flat out impossible, while his colleague Peter Calvocoressi opined that it would have taken at least an additional year.

Its bit sad that today's world in so many examples dont mention those Polish who worked at Enigma. In 2014 "The Imitation Game" theres barely 1 line about some Polish dudes.

Britain and France did nothing to help Czechoslovakia. I still can't understand how our government could count on those two countries. There were two better options for Poland:
    1. Secret aliance with Czechoslovakia in 1938 and strike on Germany on Poznan-Berlin direction, when Germany entered Sudeten.
    2. Make a kind of false alliance with Germany buying time as long as possible, arming up as much as possible. Then we should let Germany to use our eastern border against Russia possibly keeping our own army (or at least part of it) in Poland and waiting until both - Russia and Germany become weak enough and then use our army against Germany.

It is not true that the Poles were involved in breaking the Enigma code... only the Poles in 1932 broke the code, but they needed money and thus England and France were included in the project which was finally appropriated by the British.
