I literally no both ng about growing basil but I do knoe it's like 3.50 with tax at Walmart for barely anything like five small leafs. I live in an apartment so him giving me info about that was cool I also didn't know you could bunch together and have success cause I really don't wanna by a 10 dollar pot and be breaking even by the time I buy some soil.
First-year growing basil. Seems pretty easy to grow. But I was blown away by the flavor! I only used dried basil before. One leaf made my homemade spaghetti sauce come alive!
I love growing basil! You're right, basil is so chill. I live in a tropical country and I water my basil a little bit twice a day. Recently, I had to spend a couple of days away from home and I missed watering it, and yeah, it looked so sad and limp. But several hours after watering, the leaves were up and lively again. Thank you for your videos! Ü
How's your Thai Basil doing? I'm going to plant 3 today and like you I'm new to gardening. Did you try to overwinter or start plants every year? I saw another video that said after removing the leaves from any organic store bought thai basil,, stick the stems in water until they get roots for a couple weeks then just poke it in the ground. Enjoy your bounty of goodness.
@@adriankap2978 Mine has survived two winters and is still vibrant and flowers every now and then. And yes, what you heard from the video is true; that is how people propagate, and I do that too. So you pick a robust stem and stick it in water until it grows some roots. And then, you can choose to go kratky or plant it in the soil. Basil is easy to look after. Good luck with your basil plant.
Thank you so much for all this wonderful information! I grew basil years ago while living in GA and didn't remember what type of pot I put them in. I'm now living in the mountains of Colorado and my childhood friend (we grew up in Michigan😊) sent me some of her harvested sweet basil seeds! So far they are looking great in a seed starting tray. Can't wait to see what they do as they grow bigger. Thanks again!!
Basil does great in the hot desert summers, too! As long as it's not in direct sunlight it seems to handle temps up to 117F with no problem. Great video, as always! Thanks, Luke!
Thanks for the info. My friend gave me a container of it and I put it in a pot on the deck. It went limp (no water) so now i am watering it more. Cooking with it tonight! YUM!!
Good video. Basil is also good in herb cubes: chop herbs, drop in ice cube trays, cover with water, and freeze for the winter soups and Italian dishes.
Nice complete and simple guide! What is your take on self-watering/wicking setups for basil? What is your take on air pruning pots for basil? I'm trying to find the least time consuming most fail-proof way to grow basil and these techniques seem to work well in that regard for other plants.
I live in Arizona and was told to grow my basil in a potting soil meant for cacti, so that it can drain well. How does this compare to the type of potting soil you recommend? Thanks!
I'd love some growing season tips on pruning to keep it from flowering. Mine pops with flowers and that changes the basil flavor. Also pest management: like should I use sevin? Or some other method to keep the bug beasties from chewing on my leaves?
A few years ago, I had a cutting from a sweet basil plant and kept it all winter in a small deli container. It did OK in a small window w/o any additional light.
I am thinking to buy Trifecta+ for my potted basil plant. 1) Do you think it's needed? It's a young plant bought from a nursery, maybe 6-8 inches tall. 2) If I do buy it, how much do I apply it? I am new to gardening. Thanks for your videos!! Really helpful.
Love your videos. You make it look so easy and now I would like to try growing in pots. I have only grown Basil in an Aerogarden and added liquid nutrients. You mentioned in this video to fertilize once a month. How do you add fertilizer to an already growing Basil plant and how much?
I have basil growing in Gallon milk jugs and I started it at the time of the Pandemic starting and they get the morning sun for at least 5 hours and they are doing well
Thanks so much for the info! I'm starting my own apartment patio garden and I've been wondering how best to grow my basil. We have longer summers here in texas so I'm glad to know I should probably be watering this guy almost every day (it's hot af here)
How is the basil growing? I'm also in an apartment and in Texas. My basil is currently in a small pot and is about 3in high. Soon, I'm thinking I'll buy a bigger pot (1.5 gallons like he said maybe) and move it to my small balcony.
i started growing my basil last winter, indoors, from seed, and they were doing really well until i came back from the college dorm and i didnt water for a few days, and ive managed to get them to cling onto life, but only really enough to get clippings. theyre very small and wilted, with entirely brown roots. the first time i tried clippings, they died immediately, but they seem to be holding on for round two!
I grow basil strictly for the honeybees and all the native pollinators. The 2 best varieties I found are African Blue basil and Wild Magic basil. They are both sterile cultivars. They never stop blooming the whole growing season. I have used the African Blue basil for cooking. It is a bit sweeter than the common basil.

Thanks for this great video! Basil is really easy to grow, but it's helpful to hear some tips. I bought a basil plant a few months ago which is growing strong, and I'm growing Thai basil from seed which is catching up 😊
Questions: I'm new to gardening, and we live in an apartment.... once my basil starts growing and I prune the tips, how do I know when to stop pruning so that it doesn't continue growing? Will there be a limit to the growth? And If I needed a bunch, do I take the leafs off and then cut off the stem that I picked them off from? Thanks!
Shara Parker basil is very forgiving. I gave mine a trim down to the first set of leaves and it grew 4 inches taller. You can pick leaves or trim each stalk for what you need, but if you use it a lot you don't want to overwhelm the plant. basically as long as each stem has 4-6 leaves you'll be fine.
First to comment. Yeah 😀 We just love having our basil plants and we have several types. If we are cooking pasta basil is in it. Don't forget to make some pesto too.
I'm growing two basil plants in pots on my patio. (one i started from seed and is doing amazing, and one was a plant i got from my grocery store that was super sad looking when i bought it. But i was cooking and needed basil and the plant was only 2.99 so i bought it. Now it if full and lush and a very happy plant.) And I have one more basil plant growing, its growing a little slower but, still doing good. Started from a seen using my aquaponics system. Basil was harder to grow in the system, but our parsley and oregano and mint is doing great. Thyme is struggling slightly but hanging on. We also have a tomato plant in our system that is finally producing fruit. Super exited for that. And our lettuce and cilantro are doing good too. Had a jalepeno plant that produced one fruit. stopped growing, so we transplanted it to a raised bed outside and it has taken off. I had no interest in gardening until i started watching your videos. Now I don't think I will ever not grow my own produce.
Do you have to add soil a lot since there is big drain holes in your pots? I put a couple of coffee filters in the bottom of my pots for that reason. Love the videos!
I use coffee filters also to keep the soil from "leaking". They dissolve or disappear within a month or so, by then soil stays in place, no longer coming out of the holes.
First time planting/growing on south facing patio. am working with sweet basil, Greek oregano, leeks, curly parsley and Havasu peppers. No real gardening experience.
I bought 3 basil and mint plant last year and they didn't make it past three months. 😩 this year I'm going to try again but from seeds. Thai basil and Thai holy basil.. after watching this clip I hope I can do it.
Hiya, I’m from the UK. Does it die back in the winter please? I can keep it in my conservatory but that gets below freezing. I once put a Christmas turkey, to thaw, in the conservatory and it was still frozen solid on Christmas morning! Can I grow it inside on a windowsill? Many thanks. My absolute favourite meal is mozzarella, tomatoes, olive oil and basil.
What about if you have the pots out in the open and not sheltered under a roof, is it ok for the pots for be rained on or will this not work during periods of heavy rains? Can you address growing in pots out in the open? Thanks!
Merlynn The Great hi there! Can you please read my comment above yours to help me? My basil always die in the sun, should I water more? Just keep outside but not in direct sunlight? TIA
Hey Luke, can you pot tomatoes, basil, chives and marigolds in the same pot? I know they can be grown together, but I'm not sure if that applies to containers, as well..
I put about 6 seeds in a small container. Example: Your little 6 pack-each of the six spaces have 5-6 seeds each. Question is, when I plant them out in the garden, should I separate each little plant and plant it or plant the whole group?
any thoughts on Utah conditions, like low humidity environments, intense sun, and hIgh temps. I know it's mediteranean, but would you say there's any special or difficult considerations or actions that should be taken? as for watering. would you say use a well draining soil and lean on over watering. or add some soilmoist gel and lean on underwatering?
I know that this video was done two years ago, so I don't know if you will see this. But I want to know how to keep bugs away from my basil. I first started seeing little holes in the leaves. I didn't check my basil for about a week and when I did all the leaves were gone just the stems remained. What can I use to get rid of these bugs (I didn't see them, so I don't know what they are) and still be able to use the basil in cooking and in pesto's. Thank you
Thanks, love basil! Saving Basil seeds.. maybe you have an easy way to do it? Each little bud has several tiny seeds, but getting them out of their little pods is not that easy.
I grow basil year round using a T5 lighting system. My favorite basil is the one where there is a cinnamon flavor to it. Another thing basil has going for it is that it roots easily from a stem cutting,
I place the cuttings in water for about a week, maybe 10 days. There will be some transplant shock when planting the stem cuttings now with lots of roots into soil, but the basil recovers quickly. Lemon Balm the same thing, last year tried several times to start seedlings, nothing. This year 2 seedlings sprouted, love Lemon Balm, so took a couple of stem cuttings placed them in water for a week or so and now have 2 very healthy Lemon Balm plants from stem cuttings doing excellent under a T5 lighting system. Next test will be Rosemary, if only I could get one seed to sprout. Thank you for asking.
Sorry for the multiple responses, but have had a couple of afterthoughts. 1 - on the Basil stem cuttings. Be sure the cutting is on the main stem of the Basil plant and not on a branch of the main stem. This will do 2 things. 1 - start new Basil plants from stem cuttings, and 2 - prolong the life of the original Basil plant by delaying it from going to flower. And as a reminder to myself, will attempt some Sage main stem cuttings to see if they root once in water.
I have grown basil before and it has grown beautifully. This year I planted one plant and I believe that it got too much rain. Some of the leaves started turning brown. I took off the damaged leaves and brought it into the house and under a grow light. Today I noticed that some of the new leaves were turning brown. I took them off and put the plant outside again in the sun. Now the leaves have started wilting yet there soil is moist. What do you think is wrong.
Catching up on my videos and wanted to ask about basil issues. Bad me bought a basil plant instead of seeds(I have bought seeds now) but the potted one has a black stem at soil line and it seems to be spreading, what is it and can I fix it?
I grew basil in 4 1/4" square pots; just one plant per pot, since that was what I had on hand. I sowed them in mid-May, here in zone 6b, from a 25 cent pack of seeds I bought on impulse at the dollar store. I ended up with about 25 plants. Watering is definitely critical - since mine were in smaller pots than yours, I had to water every day when it was hot. I got a pretty good crop off them before they started flowering - I hope to collect seed for next year, if I can. Luke, do you succession plant basil? I didn't think about starting more later in the season this year, but I could next year.
I'm growing basil in a pot but mine was looking limp and leaves was yellowing. so i moved it to a bigger pot, and added fertilizer. this was last week. hope it gets better.
To be honest, what zone are you, and do you plan to plant and harvest vegetables outdoors this winter, or not? do you rest in the winter and let the garlic does its job, and the rest of the soil rest? needed advice, asap, tired of open and close plastics every day twice daily. thanks. should i rush into harvest when have not started early in late summer.
Just starting my indoor grow areas now. Growing basil from seed and they are still small. I have a 2' X 4' tray that I set my pots in. When the tray gets very dry, I add 1/4" of water. Makes it similar to a sub irrigated planter and I have to water less often. WRT watering, how often one has to water depends on the relative humidity of the air.
So tired of people saying he talks too much, he is informative and I love it!!

What about pinching it back some to make the plant more bushy?
Just starting my indoor grow areas now. Growing basil from seed and they are still small. I have a 2' X 4' tray that I set my pots in. When the tray gets very dry, I add 1/4" of water. Makes it similar to a sub irrigated planter and I have to water less often.
WRT watering, how often one has to water depends on the relative humidity of the air.
Can't wait to grow it! I eat it by the bucket loads. Well, close :D
