I always thought the Light was just another entity like the Heart. I think the Ancestor was being literal when he said "The Light, the promise of safety!". The Light gives mankind hope through it's aid, (but hope as in the Greek conception of hope, a curse that drives you to keep fighting and suffering) so that it may continue to feed off that suffering.

I love this interpretation and i think it fits perfectly the style of the game. Perhaps all the events, factions and calamities are nothing more that cosmic entities simply competing with each other for worship and power, with humans and other lesser creatures acting as their actors, or perhaps their pawns.

I also found it interesting how religious characters have always been cool with the Occultist and to a lesser extent the Hellion but the Abomination is too much (especially considering the church tortured and branded him for such a long time rather than killing him)

@@frankie-867 I mean, while the Occultist and Hellion are heathens, the Abomination is much more directly _unholy_ , ya know?

As a catholic, I'd like to mention that the papacy/The Holy See as the governing body over the faithful has a massive role, with dd2 zooming out to the bigger picture beyond the hamlet, I'll be really curious as to how or if the church of the light has an overarching leader or if it's dozens of smaller communities with some variation in beliefs like real life protestants. also, great video! I think you did a great job in keeping it respectful and it gave me more insight into the themes and world of dd

It's something that I'm very curious about, seeing the world outside the Hamlet. What is the world like and what's happening. We can theorize and speculate but we don't have a definitive idea of what is happening while we fight back the evil in the Estate. I hope DD2 gives us more insight into it. And I'm pumped to see what RH has planned.

We don't see them so far in the early releases. But they did assemble a grand crusade army to stop the cult atop the mountain. Prepared and ready for a grand battle.
Then... nothing... the grand army of the church and kingdom was just struck with stupefying horror and the cult marched right past them.

there is actually a 3rd and very important influence for the church, zoroastrianism. not only did they worship light and flame, but the cross potent or "crusader cross" which the church uses as its symbol was originally a symbol of the magi or zoroastrian priests.

The line "A Mecca of madness and Morbidity" brings me so much grief with the games lore because it implies that Mecca still is a thing in this universe. Combine this with the crusades and enjoy the confusion

Haven't watched through this yet but my thought has always been that the Light and the Flame are different worldly interpretations/manifestations of the same otherworldly force, and that the people who worship this force have to tap into it in peculiar ways.
Channeling the power of the Flame is like fanning a fire, where it requires effort and intensity from the channeler; hence why healing skills are only usable in combat or during camp, where they have time to meditate deeply. The Flame is also, as its name implies, just as much of a destructive force as it is a force that nurtures life. This is why and how Flagellants channel its power via injuring/destroying themselves, as though they're offering their own body and soul to the Fire as a sacrificial method of carrying its power into the world.
Arguably, since all life requires heat to survive, the Flame would also be the metaphysical parent of the Heart of Darkness; the force that breathes limitless lifeblood into the Heart to be pumped through its many veins.
Or something dramatic like that lol.

What if the third unnamed part, or maybe even a fourth part, is the Blood? I theorize this namely because of its capitalization from the Ancestor's quote and many of the Flagellant's barks. Of course, this isn't to be confused with the same Blood from the Crimson Court. Or is it?

I love the idea of a trinity! What are your thoughts on a potential quaternity, following the same concept? The four-pronged symbol used to represent the faith and the presence of four religious heroes embodying different values (battle prowess, healing, wisdom, and zealotry) leads me to believe that it might be a four-part religion. Of course, this is all just speculation :) Great video, dude! I'm looking forwards to more of your stuff.

    • @MiskatonicMemorialist
      @MiskatonicMemorialist  4 года назад +6

Thanks I'm glad you like it. And yeah could see a quaternity of sorts. Each branch of the in-game cross could represent an aspect or tenet of the church.
I wasn't able to mention it in the video but in Marvin's Seraph lore it mentions how the church is currently in conflict with itself because of her and various factions have started to form. I think that's an interesting concepts since there could be dozens more sects that we just don't see in-game.

Honestly,i like the tv trope possible explaination for what is the light cause if its the case, its pretty fucking awesome. Here is the quote:
''It's possible to take the developer's explanation of the Light being 'humanity's faith in delusions of their own making' as this when one considers what the Light is actually capable of. Holy Burns Evil, Holy Water that is effective and vital in a number of places, helpful visions, genuine Healing Hands powers, and even the Heart isn't resistant to holy attacks. Taken into account, this all implies humanity created a benevolent god actively opposing the Heart and powerful enough to do so through belief alone. That's a pretty big win for humanity.''

Devout Catholic here, you most certainly did not offend me, and you’re comment that you aimed not to is most appreciated. However, Catholics generally, to speak briefly, say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. The Spirit is the result of the love which the Two of Them (Father and Son) share. The Spirit can then “fill” people, like the Saints, with love which allows them do great good. (And even you recognized how simplified it was, so your comment is, again, much appreciated.)
Please don’t take this at all harshly, this is nit picky comment (your interpretation wasn’t far off though), but I’d thought I’d at least point it out. Even my explanation is very simplified (and your comment telling everyone to research further is also much appreciated). Cheers and have a good one! This is a fine video and your content is wonderful! May God bless you and all the good which you hold dear!

There's lot of parallels between this church and the IRL Church. In the christianism, the fire represents the purification and the flame is a representation of the Holy spirit.
There's a metaphor used to understand the Holy trinity: the Father is the sun, the source. The light is the Holy spirit, the media. The warmth and reflected light is the Son, the effect and interraction with us.

I think that the story would have been better informed if they just used Catholicism as their primary point of reference. One of the strange things I've noticed in this game is how they use a Monstrance, this is something used to store the Eucharist (Body and Blood of Christ), for relics obtained from holy wars?

Unrelated rant for the algorithm gods. Please ignore.
    So you have one god?
Yeah, the father, the son, and the holy spirit.
    That's like three gods tho.
Naahh same guy just serving the different roles.
So why doesn't he have the same name? Is the father not the holy spirit? And how can you be the father AND the son?
Bro it's like metaphors and stuff but also super duper real.
Idk man this sounds like a hodgepodge of random elements from random religions with Judaism as the base. Like I'm not telling you what and what not to believe but you just told me three guys were the same guy but did different things but your God can do anything so idk why he had to limit himself like that or just didn't tell you to write down the same guy did three jobs. Like when a director writes and acts in a movie we don't call him Tom, Brad, and Eddy. We say John Johnson was the director, actor, and writer. Seems like the best thing you can say is that it's a purposely misleading contradiction. Almost like thousands of years and random weirdos with their hands in the pie kinda changed and shaped your holy book into a collection of short stories and genealogy all held together with the promise of a story line.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk. Sorry it was cringe.

The three-dimensional being that can't even perceive the fourth dimension that he lives in (time) thinks the transcendent being must conform to his limited notions of coherence, how quaint
Even the physical universe becomes a mess of paradoxes when you start prying at the fraying edges of our perceived reality, why would you expect the Supreme Being to be comprehensible?

    • @Dr.waffles1101
      @Dr.waffles1101 Год назад

@@sirdrork8616 I agree but we can't interact with a higher dimension. So I choose to not believe in a high dimension god written by desert nomads. Or make laws based on any religion.
Like I said it was a rant about a religious concept I found silly. No shade towards people that worship any religion.
However months away from when I posted this, I hope we can derail this comment section with deep discussion on higher and lower dimensions for absolutely no reason. Like how would life like ve in a singular dimension?

    • @censoredanon8928

The Trinity is not three roles. The Trinity is One God, Three distinct persons. The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. One in essence, three in person. You just don't understand the terms behind each and that's why you have this ignorant opinion.
