    What I like about him is that his existence implies the Curse is a somewhat known phenomenon outside of the Hamlet. It makes you wonder what the Countess has been up to prior to meeting the Ancestor.

    • @peterwhite6415
      @peterwhite6415 Год назад +50

      Its possible the Countess has atempted to spread it, and would go from place to place to feed and make nests, leaving only once the region was dry or once she was at risk of dying.
      Its possible she also gos from place to place, sneaking on boats or hiring coachwagons to take her to other places, where she would seduce a Rich or Noble man, both to take their home as her new nest and to feed off him and the servants.
      The reason she doesnt leave the Hamlet would be simple.:
      - The Hamlet has a decent bounty of blood and a few still normal animals and various Brigands and posisble Fishfolk she can feed off, with the Courtyard being quite vast... plus the Hamlet reputation would keep certain people away but draw adventurers to explore it... also more Brigands since their worse then the Crimson Curse.
      - The Ancestor is likely the first person to Best her and humiliate her... she likely tricked several nobleman, rich merchants and more, easly killing them and draining them to make new servants and have a feast... and then she gets her throat slit because she faced the One Man who was just as predatory and sadistic as she is... and then he indirectly helped her with His FUCKING BLOODWINE THING!

    When it comes to the Unholy Wood, I think that, he is so pious he burns evil with evil. Killing two birds with one stone, what man other than a fanatic would burn evil wood to burn those afflicted with an evil bloodsucking curse.
    Also he could be the Ancestors' personal priest, because in some rooms in the Ruins there are murals with a priest not too dissimilar from the Fanatic. Which, if true, would make him another victim-turned-monster by the Estate.
    And finally what I find that truly makes him evil isn't his actions, but his inactions. He has the cure to the Curse and only he has it, meaning he knows how to make it. And after you kill the Countess the cure becomes readily available too. The fact he decides to kill those with the Curse who haven't devolved into monsters yet rather than offer them the cure, is what ultimately marks him as evil in my books

    • @wraith1771
      @wraith1771 Год назад +8

      That’s not how I see his possession of a cure. The clue is that he only has one dose. He’s saving that cure for himself if he gets infected.
      He may know how to make the cure, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. That single dose could represent weeks of work, far too slow to simply give it away.
      If anything, his hunt for the cure could have added to his madness, the futility of trying to help anyone beyond himself drove him to cleanse by fire.

    Perhaps the reason he doesn't use the Cure is because it's incredibly difficult/time-consuming to make, so using it for others would lead to him swiftly running out of it, possibly with those cured just getting infected all over again, considering how contagious it can prove to be. Or maybe he's just a hoarder.

    Great! As always, you maintained the very same level of quality, style and manner of storytelling that creates this unique atmosphere of something so horrible and nightmarish, yet so interesting and fascinating that many people (including myself) can't just look away. This atmosphere is one of the key points that picked my interest in DD and even though I'm not the best player it still is in my top 10 favourite games.
    As for the potential fragments of Fanatic's past, I've always wondered - why exactly he has The Cure? How did he managed to get it? And why we can never get ambushed by him in the very source of the Curse fights - the Courtyard? This is one crazy and baseless theory, but maybe he somehow connected to it, maybe even partially responsible for this manifestation. Remember that when we burned the hives in first Courtyard mission the Bloodsuckers have infested other locations, and burning the unclean is one his main methods. Perhaps he was sent by the Church to do the same somewhere in the past, they even preaperad him with relics, instruments and The Cure. But instead of destroying the threat he only burned it's source, probably with many innocent people, while Bloodsuckers escaped and started to spread Crimson Curse. After that he was excommunicated, but didn't gave up on the mission.

    • @MiskatonicMemorialist
      @MiskatonicMemorialist  3 года назад +6

      It is an interesting theory. I think the cure itself is a recipe either created by him or from another sect of the church that focuses on eliminating/containing monsters (My name for them is The Inquisitors and I'll talk more about them in the Abomination video, since my theory is the ones who branded Bigby are in the same group as Fanatic).
      Remember that at the end of the Courtyard quests we learn enough about the Crimson Curse to be able to cure it ourselves, so it's possible to cure it, it just takes time.
      As for the details of his backstory, it's anyone's guess tbh. Those were just the 3 main ones that made the most sense. The deeper we dig into the rabbit hole the more convoluted the story becomes. For example, I had an idea of how he may be part of the different branch of the church that is currently in conflict with the Flagellants. Since the Flags all believe in the power of the Blood, while the line from the Fanatic Promo say "The Blood is heresy" and I really like the idea of the church being in a state of conflict with itself. With various factions and sects fighting for majority control, but there's little evidence to suggest that truly is happening.

    I'd like to posit the theory that since the Fanatic holds a resemblance to the priest in the Abbey that he may have come from an alternate timeline where the Crimson Court overtook the Hamlet and the priest was the lone survivor but then due to eldritch shenanigans he was sent to this timeline/ sent himself back in time to when the Crimson Countess was reawakened in an attempt to stop her/ save the Hamlet. Which could explain why he only attacks the infected heroes as they would be the only direct method of transmission of the curse from the court to the Hamlet.

    Well done! I find the timelines a very innovative approach. Are you suggesting in Timeline A that there could be a link between the Fanatic and the Hamlet's Abbott? Would I be correct in understanding Timeline A also as the timeline for the modded hero, or would that be more a Timeline D? Two observations should be made about that... his arrival event in the Hamlet (unmodded) suggests that he came from outside (as opposed to being a monk in the Hamlet), and was possibly already known by reputation. The second - I _did_ write his dialogue to reference extant lore sometimes, though the playable version's state seems to rather ambiguous (i.e. some of his afflicted barks reference condemnation of his actions, possible excommunication).
    I would also take anything the Ancestor says with a massive grain of salt. Even in Timeline C, it is worth noting that the Fanatic stops hunting your party once the Countess is destroyed. There is also that he does not hunt your party if it has only one cursed, and that we have no evidence that he doesn't do good work when he ISN'T hunting your party. But then, maybe that's gameplay and story segregation again 🤷‍♂️

    • @MiskatonicMemorialist
      @MiskatonicMemorialist  3 года назад +5

      This focuses solely on the Boss lore for this video. I took the approach that in Timeline A he was once a hero, but after a run in with the Crimson Curse or the Countess Pre-Courtyard, he was driven to hunt down the creature and was slowly turned into a monster by the Estate. He was once a good man, but has since become obsessed with his prey.
      Timeline B follows the same story elements but changes it up and makes him part of The Order/The Inquisitors (The same group we see in Abom Comic, a section of the Church that deals with the Occult) Never really a good person, and the Estate brings out the worst parts of his personality.
      Timeline C says he was always around the Estate and he was just some random monk in the Abbey. Had a falling out with the Abbot and was excommunicated. He was never a warrior but had to become one to fight the Crimson Curse.
      And yeah Ancestor is the definition of unreliable narrator. Even his own death has a plethora of conflicting information. So I take the fist full of salt with anything he says.
      I did assume that he was stalking the other areas of the Estate when not targeting our party, since there are plenty of Bloodsuckers to kill. Once the Countess is gone, the infestation returns to the Courtyard and he leaves. Meaning he either thinks it's under control and moves on to another village or he might actually go into the Courtyard since you no longer need an invitation, and he's just wandering around in the Courtyard. Remember it is a massive place, the only place in-game with the "Epic" length that allows multiple parties to enter and leave. He could lose himself in there and spend his entire time killing Bloodsuckers.

      @@MiskatonicMemorialist Clever. Here however is my idea.
      The fanatic was once a follower of the church. Higher ups he worked with got the crimsons curse and he had to burn them in self defense but got excommunicated for that. Now he is just as he run into him, a madman burning anything with the crimson curse to end it at all costs and those in his way.(he doesn’t understand or doesn’t give a shit about the fact that well the heroes we have with the crimson curse can still help.) When he attacks our party he have to put him down in self defense. His story ends in that case. But what if we never run into him during our experience with the crimson curse content? This is the interesting part. He burns on sight(he’s hunting the crimson curse so ofc he would) but doesn’t know they have invitations to the crimson courtyard on them. He mistakes the ashes of those with the bloodsuckers ashes. When he defeat the countess he enters the courtyard just to clean up any bloodsuckers.

    I know you’ve moved on to doing Darkest Dungeon 2 lore, but would you ever consider doing more mod lore for Darkest Dungeon 1? There’s a mod for a character called “The Knave” who has journal entries suggesting some connection to the fanatic…

    I see you didnt went in depth about his name. Unfortunatly, I think his story is far more simple that everything you said. It would explain why dd creators would chose to make "he is all you imagine him to be" thing. He is one of those religious "fanatics" who thinks that crimson curse is the devil curse and all that are inflicted by it must be burned to be clensed. He is obviosly mad and delusional. Even though there is a clear evidence that it can be cured. Fanatic is so hypocritical that he has two bottles just for himself. The things he has done to people are mad persons doing, but he clearly knows what he is doing. Scars tell us that he was doing it for a long time and crimson curse is very easy to get. Upon being inflicted he just drinks that bottle and goes killing again. He does not goes to kill quin because he is afraid to die, like a true hypocrite he is. There is nothing positive about this character which is why he must be put down.

      Look at it from the other side. The curse corrupts, kills, twists and mutilates the victims, and causes them to become vampires. By containing it, he is saving the world, but with unsavory methods.
      The CC can be cured, but you can also catch it again, and again, and again. So if he just cures them, they'll get infected AGAIN, then he'll have to cure them again

    Now if you really think about it we are the reason why corruption spread across the state just cuz imagine the amount of people that were corrupted that you fired a number one and they just went off and well imagine just did their do

    Just saying you can seriously bring up the volume to your videos. I shouldn't have to put my speakers at 100% just to hear you clearly.
